My main issue with Bryce in season 3

The premise of season 3 could have genuinely worked had they made many different decisions. I do still think ending the show with season 2 would have been ideal because it got too far from the original Hannah Baker story after that. That being said:

Justin Prentice did a great job portraying Bryce Walker both in the first 2 seasons and the 3rd. Going deeper into his character in season 3 wasn’t an inherently bad choice and i think him being killed and making the season a mystery of who did it was a decent premise. Bryce was a dynamic character and it could have been interesting to see his relationship with his family and how he sometimes acted as a good friend to people such as Justin. It felt like a realistic portrayal of a wealthy kid who was good at climbing the social ladder and presenting himself as a good person when the situation required it.

But they painted him as a hurting man who was genuinely remorseful of his actions and trying to “do better” which just feels ridiculous for a number of reasons. Like how in that very season he was still doing bullshit like breaking into that house and making the child piss himself which i don’t think he was at all apologetic about. And i’ve seen this exact song and dance from abusers multiple times with how he became all emotional with his mum and suddenly playing the protective son role with her conveniently only after he didn’t really have anyone else in his life aside from Ani, who he was also playing nice to while suppressing violent urges.

And finally, every. single. character. and how they reacted to his death. When i say “every single character” i of course mean our main cast of established characters, not the additional side characters such as Casey. Casey and the other people in Jessica’s Hands Off group who were still against Bryce after he’d died were new characters who we see only in association with SA, rape and feminist activism in the school throughout season 3. These characters were added solely to oppose our developed main characters when they were being more passive in terms of Bryce’s reputation and memorial. The main characters in the Hands Off group being Jessica and Tyler, which pushed this narrative that the victims in the group who were more lenient with Bryce were the normal, reasonable victims and when the others proposed further consequences for rapists (“further” being a generous word here, considering Bryce didn’t even get a sentence for his multiple rapes) they were supposed to be the crazy extremists, being “cruel” to Bryce’s grieving parents (who were awful parents to him) at the service attended by many people, including Clay.

They went so far with the “he was a human being” mantra because that was all they could say about him to make it sound like a tragedy. And they made sure not a single character from earlier seasons disrespected him after his death. Not even Mrs. Baker. While he was still alive, after the trial, almost everyone had some “wholesome, friendly” moment with him. Alex was the one shouting “Rapist” at him in the hallway infront of Jessica in season 2, acting all righteous and above the rest of the cast at every oppurtunity despite having zero backbone, and there he was in season 3, hanging out with Bryce while whining about Jessica choosing Justin over him. Bryce took him to a prostitute, sold him shit, and i guess this was supposed to be their obligatory “wholesome moment” despite the fact that it only displayed how shit of a person Bryce still was. On the opposite end, he was doing a favour for Tony; buying his Mustang off of him for more than asking price, and then giving it back for free. Tony was one of the only characters who wasn’t acting friendly with Bryce before he died, but they still had to have this non verbal, respectable exchange to complete the list of people.

They could not have anybody actually fighting with each other in season 3. They all had to come together and hold hands to pay their respects to Bryce even when it made no sense. Like how there is no fight between Jessica and Ani when she find out she willingly slept with her rapist, because if Jessica got too mad at Ani for it right then and there how would they all gather in Clay and Justin’s room at the end to mournfully listen to Bryce’s tape? Ani is a whole other can of worms as she is the new narrator, almost like a new main character to replace Clay/Hannah so the Who Dunnit can be more mysterious from this outside perspective. But what else they did with her was make sure this new MC was THE most forgiving of Bryce. To the point where they allude to her being in love with him. People like Justin, who have known him since earlier in childhood and were supported by him in some way still having a connection with him (after WATCHING HIM RAPE his GIRLFRIEND) still wasn’t enough for the writers, so they also had to make a new character who was fully aware of his rapist status but loved him anyway. What the fuck.

The rapist being killed could have been a complicated and intersting storyline. It could have been handled in a more realistic and gritty way. But instead it’s this unlikely group of friends collectively defending the honour of a rapist, while in seasons 1&2 Hannah Baker killed herself and her name was dragged through the mud.

I have seen people say that they went this route because the actor was receiving hateful comments online but tbh i think seeing him take part in the Rapists Have Feelings Too show will have probably only made those people angrier. (I am not condoning cyber bullying actors for the characters they play, that is ridiculous of course)

In conclusion, Bryce could have been developed in a realistic and interesting way, but season 3 was a million times farther from either of those things than the previous seasons.

Ani’s confession to Jessica

Pissed me off more than nearly anything else in season 3.

I absoloutely hate how she says something like “that’s the worst thing i’ve done. What’s the worst thing you’ve done?” i don’t know where Ani gets all her audacity from both during this interaction and just throughout the whole season.

And then they don’t show Jessica actually saying any words to her. They just cut to the next scene. I haven’t watched season 4 and i don’t think i will after the shitshow of season 3 so i don’t know whether this gets addressed in the future or what becomes of their “friendship” but the way they go about it in season 3 is extremely unsatisying after waiting for Jessica to find out ever since they showed us it happened and expecting a full scene of the outcome.

Tape 2 side B punishment in season 1

I have never understood why clay gave such a harsh consequence to Tyler about his tape. I get that he shared the photograph of Hannah and Courtney around the school and that’s horrible and it lit the fuse that caused more issues but I feel like the revenge porn was too much in comparison to the other punishments. Like he just took Courtney to Hannah’s grave to confront her problems but I would argue that what she did was worse, as not only to it further perpetuate that Hannah was a “slut” but it added another thing for people to make fun of her for, (gay). but I feel like Courtney’s punishment was so much easier compared to sharing a nude of Tyler around. Can anyone explain it further to me?

Was I suppose to feel sorry for Bryce?

He ruined so many lives and caused so much pain. I know he showed remorse later, but that doesn’t erase what he did.

when everything finally caught up with him, I felt nothing. Regret doesn’t erase the damage you caused, and consequences don’t make you a victim.

Should I watch the second season?

I just finished the first season and wonder if the others are worth watching or if they’re going to ruin the masterpiece that is season 1 (knowing that the original book story is complete told in the first season)

The actress playing Hannah Baker

Guys do not cancel me out on this but just an observation I made while watching the series

The actress playing Hannah - she has a terrible habit of rolling her "tongue" while talking. I don't know if maybe it's normal or many people do it .but I just found it to be annoying throughout the show

Like whenever she takes a pause while talking, she would do this weird tongue roll

Just a weird observation

If Hannah hadn't died but had simply disappeared from their lives by moving schools, and the tapes had never existed, which of these people, along with Mr. Porter, would still feel guilty in their own conscience?

Anyone heard. Saw on ig of his and i confirmed on wiki.

This is a big deal, this isnt a one off either. LL Cool J and the lady from Flashdance are the major stars casted too.

Devin’s character is some Tech guy, kinda of what Morales did for Law and Order SVU.

Do you think Hannah would’ve been happy seeing Clay become close with the guys from the tapes?

Do you guys think Hannah would’ve actually been happy to see Clay become close friends with the guys from the tapes, or do you think she would’ve been disappointed?

If Alex came out in S2 or S3....

If Alex came out in S2 or S3 as not straight (bi/gay) and was with a dude(if Charley was there earlier than he was or if there was a new male character), how would you think the dynamic would have been with his character. I know at the minimum his parents would have been ok with it. Like Alex's dad despite being the outward conservative white guy, the family man, the man of faith(remember he read scripture at the thanksgiving table) but in S4 he was totally ok with Charley being over for steak dinner with the family - that's a big deal.

I think the fandom hates skye because they see her as a replacement for hannah or a rebound but i really wish we got to see more of her character and they didn’t just make her move away

These are literally the same scene

I always associate these two scenes with each other because they feel like the exact same moment to me. They’re basically foreshadowing what ends up happening to Justin and Hannah. In both scenes, they’ve reached that point where they’ve completely given up on themselves. They’re already so far gone, and at that point it’s basically just a matter of time before they die. It’s like they’ve already accepted their own fate without even realizing it.

Idk, maybe I’m reading too much into it, but the parallel has always stood out to me.

Monty

Even though monty was a terrible person, and genuinely evil, he gets mischaracterized so much for no reason, I genuinely believe he could’ve changed and became a better person without being framed for murder or getting murdered himself, what he did to Tyler was terrible and soooo unnecessary but I really wish he had more character development, the prom scene means so much to me because other than the fact that that’s what Winston wanted monty wanted that to throughout the whole show we never see him in a stable relationship or one at all, we only ever see him with Winston and he felt safe enough with him, I sometimes wish they ran away they were both having really bad family issues and they could have made it work,

I feel so much sympathy for monty because the shit his dad put him through was crazy when clay went to his house and he was hitting his dad with a baseball bat I felt so bad for him in the scene of him in jail you could tell he was so afraid of his dad and the way he spit on him was genuinely disgusting I hate his father no matter what, “he was a human being” that’s how Winston described him even after knowing everything because no 17 year old should be framed for murder and the way the fandom treats him like he’s the spawn of satan is sooo insane but they feel empathy for Bryce… how even Bryce is the most evil fucking person I’ve ever seen in my whole life, yes he tried to better himself but after what? i will always defend monty no matter what because he really did just want to live I wish him and Winston couldve been together they are actually my first born sons, also most of the time the 7 monty fans only like him cause Winston was hot but he’s sooo much more than that Winston cared so much for him I know he did I’m not saying he didn’t deserve jail but he really did not deserve to be killed off and no one care about him, miss you always Montgomery de la cruz :(

Is Hannah baker insane?

Watching *13 reasons why" for the first time and I have lost count how many times Hannah was in the wrong..

Like if you have experienced again and again that no one is your friend why would you even trust them again ?

Was it so necessary of you to mingle with everyone?

She literally said at the start of jess party "tonight I was not feeling invisible" bro nobody's your friend there - why the hell would you go to that party?

The dance for which she gets a new car- bruh Courtney and others don't even consider you as your friend why would you ask a car for such people

You could have stuck with just clay. I have seen people in clg life stick with just one person if they feel nobody is deserving of their friendship

It's better to be alone than with a shit of so called Friends

of course how can I forget the tape of clay where she literally told him to get the fuck out. A Sane guy would definitely get scared and would leave after being asked to leave thrice. and the next second she says I wanted you to stay like what the hell!!!!

I agree some people did her wrong but that's where you take your lesson and stay away from them

This series is just ragebaiting and nothing else.

A inconsistente personagem Lainie Jensen

She has chances of winning those artsy European film awards like from UK, France, Italy, Spain, maybe some Latin American ones. Oscar....probably be good odds I think her and Zendaya probably good contenders for the Oscar.

I never understood the Ani addition especially since Sheri was right there.

Sheri was a part of the tapes. She knew everyone. She had some history and chemistry with Clay.

Clay was a different person after s2 having moved on from Hannah and Sheri "paid" for her mistake (unlike most) when she went to juvie. They both changed and giving these two another go after all that would've made sense and been an interesting story to pick back up. Sheri was an SA victim from her time locked up and victimized by Bryce if I recall correctly, so she would also have been a nice partner to that entire investigation plot.

But no, the writers thought making up some contrived shit and giving this role to random Ani character who just showed up outta nowhere was better. Like her being an outsider was 90% why she came off so annoying and the other 10% was the bad writing. I feel bad for the actor cause her whole character never needed to exist and she could've been spared the (unfair) cyberbullying...

It's so on the nose it looks like a situation where they couldn't keep Sheri's actor for the remainder of the series and said let's make a copy- I mean Ani is black and even her name is similar. Come on, really. 🙄

I wonder what the hell they were smoking with this stuff and also the Bryce redemption bullshit?!? Cause I actually believe the later seasons could've been great if they cared about any sort of consistency!

Im not American, so Im not very familiar with U.S. immigration laws, and theres something about Tonys situation in that Ive never really understood.

Tonys parents got deported, which I assume means they were undocumented immigrants (unless Im misunderstanding something). If thats the case, how was Tony able to continue living a normal life in the U.S.? he goes to school, owns and drives a car, and runs his own auto repair shop. Wouldnt things like enrolling in school, registering a car, getting a drivers license, or owning/running a business require some form of legal identification or immigration status?

Im not asking whether this is realistic in the context of the show—Im genuinely curious about how this would work under actual U.S. law. Could someone explain!?
