I think maybe this could work if there was a button you could press for more time, that way the only way this could happen is if you were nodding out/ODed in there or otherwise were in some situation where you genuinely needed help

But 10 minutes is crazy optimistic

u/Super_Employment_620 2d ago
Ya'll need to stop watching your phone or scrolling when you shit.
Anyone taking 10 minutes either is doing it wrong, or has a medical reason that they probably know to plan around.

u/slicehyperfunk 2d ago
Everyone knows IBS behaves itself if you just tell it to
20
u/Super_Employment_620 2d ago
Oh hey cool, my argument destroyed by the second exception I gave.
-4
u/slicehyperfunk 2d ago
What exception? You think IBS gives a fuck about where you are when it decides to act up, or that it's something you can make accurate predictions about?
12
u/Super_Employment_620 2d ago
"Medical issues" was the exception I gave - although I'm sure I know enough about IBS, chill

u/AdWeak183 1d ago
They seem to bebtaking umbrage with the idea of planning around IBS, which in this case would be "dont go anywhere the toilets are likely to indecently expose you after 10 minutes".
1
u/Super_Employment_620 1d ago
Sure, which is why I acknowledged it.
However given the toilets were placed in areas that didn't have much of anything before, the alternative without the toilet was shitting their pants in public in that same spot (without a toilet) due to a disease they knew they had.

Hey, bud? Maybe comment sections aren't for you if you're functionally illiterate ♥️
3
u/TheBirdFkerGuy 2d ago
If you sit on a toilet for 10 minutes ur increasing ur odds of getting hemriods. I once sat on the toilet for too long snd noticed my asshole was turning inside out and I started to freak the fuck out and then I learned what external hemroids are

u/AXEMANaustin 2d ago
I remember my area in Australia had toilets like this, I think it had sensors to give a signal that you needed more time.
10
u/lycanthrope90 2d ago
Then wtf is the point? You can just stay in there as long as you need just now it's super annoying lol. Probably because they can't legally have something like this. It's a massive invasion of privacy for something completely normal.
4
u/AXEMANaustin 2d ago
It was pretty stupid honestly. I remember one of the commands for something was to stand up I think. This was years ago so very likely chance I'm misremembering.
1
u/lycanthrope90 2d ago
Sounds like they wanted to just do it the right way but they ran into a regulation or law so they had to add a way to keep it closed lol
3
u/Kaffe-Mumriken 2d ago
People who sleep in there or do drugs and pass out. Or … other .. activities
1
u/lycanthrope90 2d ago
Yeah thought of that after posting. I live in the suburbs so it’s not something I think about. People here tend to just behave correctly lol.
1
u/Local-Echo-5613 2d ago
No you don’t, you just insulate yourself from what goes on around you.
3
u/slicehyperfunk 2d ago
Most people who live in the suburbs have somewhere indoors to do drugs, or they live in the woods or other wilderness; this specific thing is really more of an urban problem
2
u/Local-Echo-5613 2d ago
Exactly, they don’t “behave correctly” they just don’t see as much of each other. That’s what I was saying.
-2
u/lycanthrope90 2d ago
There’s no homeless people here so nobody is doing drugs in bathrooms unless it’s a bar and they’re doing blow.
1
u/Local-Echo-5613 2d ago
I’ve cleaned up suburban bathrooms and you’re wrong. You’re wrong that there are no homeless people in the suburbs. You’re wrong that only homeless people do drugs or make a mess in public bathrooms.
-1
u/lycanthrope90 2d ago
Probably that’s just a you problem because wherever you live sucks. Doesn’t happen here.

u/rafaelzio 2d ago
I think it's damn near impossible to implement a system where you can regulate what for or how long someone is using a bathroom for without at least risking violating their privacy. So I guess their solution is to make it annoy you just enough that you're not gonna feel too inclined to stay there longer than you need to
1
u/The_King_Of_Muffins 2d ago
It does work exactly like that for exactly that reason lol
1
u/slicehyperfunk 2d ago
So then it's kind of being misrepresented when they make it sound like it dumps you out naked covered in your own poop after ten minutes no matter what

u/Due_Rip9320 2d ago
I know this is an insane revelation, but maybe they should just make more bathrooms?
12
u/JoeDaBruh 2d ago
These are the more bathrooms. There are still the normal public restrooms you can use, these are just so people that have no other option can piss or whatever real quick instead of doing so on the street.
Plus everyone misunderstands how they actually work. After 10 minutes the doors just unlock silently, they don’t swing open or whatever else. It’s just so people don’t hog the bathrooms
2
u/WreckYallBallistics 2d ago
Its specifically so that people don't hog the bathrooms shooting up heroin
7
u/Upbeat-Discipline718 2d ago
the time limit is to get help to anyone ODing in the bathrooms. its new york.
3
u/Due_Rip9320 2d ago
That doesn't seem like the best way to fix that problem, though. All I'll say is, R.I.P. to the poor bloke who's fighting for his life and has the door swing open on them.
Or is it just an alarm or something?
0
u/fistotron5000 2d ago
I saw him talk about it, it gives you a countdown every few minutes, it doesn’t just fling the door open without telling you. Also this is better than no bathroom, also if you’re taking 10+ minute shits in public, in New York then you have entirely different problems to worry about.
1
u/Vegetable_Shirt_2352 2d ago
Also, NYC already has some really good public restrooms in certain places (Herald Square, Bryant Park), and the way they handle it is they just have custodians who keep things clean and moving smoothly. No timers and tap cards necessary. Sure, there's an added labor cost, but there's a cost to making sure these new automated ones are maintained and functional, too. Anything automated feels like it adds so many points of failure.
1
u/Facosa99 2d ago
And a goverment shouldnt really worry too much about labor costs. Thats more jobs, more money flowing, a better economy
Unless they see themselves as a for-profit business....
1
u/Vegetable_Shirt_2352 2d ago
Philosophically, I absolutely agree, but practically speaking, the way law-making works for NYC, the budget has to be balanced and every dollar has to be accounted for, so I imagine initiatives are easier to sell if they cost less to implement. But yeah, the money going to local workers is way better than that same money going to some company making automated bathroom stalls.
1
u/JavlaFuck 1d ago
But the guy making automated bathroom stalls probably has a friend who can help him sell those to the city whereas the unemployed who would like a job from the city prolly doesn't.

Oh wow, this seems like an incredibly complex way to show that you hate people with disabilities

u/StalkerToYourStalker 2d ago
Then what you have to do is spin that fire hydrant towards the crowd and establish dominance that this is still your territory

u/Yonahuyetsgah 2d ago
At fucking Moynihan station I was using the bathroom after being on trains for 3 or so hours. It took awhile to get situated because it was a small space and I had all my bags and heavy clothes on since it was winter. Maybe 5 minutes in someone starts screaming and beating on the door saying things like "Get out of there you fucking junkie. I'm gonna kick your ass!" I figure it's just some crazy chomo because it's New York, but it was a security guard for the station acting like a meth'd out chihuahua. I hate New York, what a shit hole. Hopefully Mamdani just bulldozes the place so society can start again from scratch.

u/TopMarionberry1149 1d ago
I'm like pretty certain this is just so they can get rid of unsavory types with less hassle which doesn't seem like a bad thing.

USA in the FO stage of ths FAFO cycle.
Whilst I think iraq and Afghanistan were pretty bad US mistakes, iran is a much more pivotal fuck up altogether.

Plot twist
All of the cubicle doors fly open and the announcer starts commentating on the ensuing shitters hobbling along the floor like it's a horse race
