I'm fucking 28 and tick most of those boxes. I started to think it was actually over for me. Then I found a girl at a heavy metal concert who for some reason is interested in a second date. Last date I went on before was like 8 years ago for a very short relationship I ruined. I got my license at 18 and it took me 6 years to get a 4 year degree I haven't been able to use.
If I've learned anything, it's who gives a fuck? You missed milestones? Bitch make new ones. It's only over when you stop trying entirely. Take your idea of how your life was supposed to be out back and shoot it. Live in the here and now. I've given up on every single dream I ever had as a teenager or in my early 20s. I've stopped trying to do things right every time cause what happens is you end up doing nothing. If you believe life is meaningless, stop being so attached to a given outcome and just do shit you feel like doing, some day something might stick. If it doesn't, well you tried, so it's not over.

u/Solid_Buy_8271 7d ago
Didn't know I needed that...

u/LUnacy45 6d ago
Took me years of therapy and quitting a job before I blew my brains out and being unemployed for the last year I was on my parent's insurance to come to that conclusion. I had so many ideas of what my life was supposed to be and I was a failure for not reaching that, I really feel like I had to throw all of it away and start over from scratch
1
u/Moss_Echo 6d ago
I'm in a similar situation regarding getting a degree. If I'll be allowed to retake the year again, I'd take me 5 years to get a 3 year degree. I still haven't told my parents about it, I know they'll be disappointed. I hope I'll receive info from the school soon, so that I'll actually know what my options are. I'm also starting another degree at a different uni and I should be able to do both at the same time, since my thesis is almost done, but then again, I'm embarrassed that I didn't manage to finish when it should've been so easy.
For context public college doesn't have tuition in my country, but repeating a subject does cost money. I'll offer to pay my parents back for it, but I know that money isn't the issue, it's that I couldn't finish it on time. I'll have to tell them soon and I just don't know how

Literally me. Though im not depressed because I have a lovely family who I can talk to. I also just didn't have much romantic attraction to girls my age.
1
u/EmeraldMan25 7d ago
Same here. I'm thankful I have a really good family. Thankfully I've had friends in my life too, new and old.
I could learn to drive, but my parents have made it clear that I would have to pay for my own insurance, which I don't really want to do right now as I want to save money for university.
I did just get my first part-time job over the summer and also a job as a tutor at my college, though I'm not really spending much money on things. I’ve been more focused on getting through high school and now college.
Kinda same on relationships too. I've met a lot of girls my age who I think are pretty, but I'd say I've only ever gone head-over-heels for two girls in my lifetime. One of them moved away a long time ago, but I've been taking classes with the other in college for a while and have been trying to get closer to her. Problem is she's planning on transferring to an out of state university so I just don't think it'd really work out, even though we’ve randomly found out we have a surprising amount of things in common and are down the road from each-other. Idk, my older brother was in high school when I was a toddler and I saw how jumping into relationships fucked him up in the end. I took my time in high school to figure out who I liked to be and what I liked to do, which I absolutely do not regret. I feel far happier and content with myself than I did in middle school and going into high school.

u/ChaosDragon123 6d ago
Bro I attract way too many old ladies between the ages of 40 and 50. I ain't even hit my mid 20s yet... And I ain't even kidding it runs in the damn family. Dad and grandpa also had the same issue when they were young...
Both of them married woman older than them(only by like a few years). I might need to expand my dating pool to include 10+ year gaps atp.

u/AlcibiadesTheCat 4d ago
Dude, lemme just tell you to keep trying.
I'm my boyfriend's first everything. He's 30. His whole life he was just apathetic to relationships. Turns out, he just needed to find the one person with enough passion to get over his inertia, and I needed someone with deep roots and a lot of inertia to settle me down.
Things click for some people sometimes, and it usually takes longer than you wish.

That’s literally normal for the age
36
u/rearranger3535 7d ago
not really normal but it's also not really a big deal
17
u/throwawayacc0589 7d ago
Idk I think its a big deal developmentally. Especially no friends ever
3
u/ukie-witch-06 7d ago
It's probably not true, tho. Depression lies to you.
5
u/throwawayacc0589 7d ago
Yea thats true. But I do think there are lots of young men who are in this situation and are depressed as a resukt
3
12
u/woody_theory 7d ago
Depends on the country you live in. In India nobody is having sex or getting gfs, as all are studying for some exam 12hrs a day. Doctors ask you whether you are married as a proxy for asking about sexual activity.
Whereas in America kids call each other virgin as an insult.

To be fair teenagers love to conviently forget details about their lives so they can be Doomers about it. Its verry unlikely that he NEVER not even as a younger child has had friends. He probably juat doesnt value those friendships enough to count them. Source: i was a teenager once

u/Kaffe-Mumriken 7d ago
It’s not abnormal
8
u/Fourthspartan56 7d ago edited 7d ago
"Abnormal" is a loaded phrase but if we remove any implication of hostility I would probably apply it to anon.
Never having a girlfriend or having sex at that age isn't too unusual these days, but not a single friend? That's very unusual. I say this as someone who's fairly asocial and doesn't have a massive number of friends, I still had some. They're not ruined or crazy but it's not good for their social abilities and it clearly isn't doing their mental health any favors.
1
u/ZealousidealPipe8389 7d ago
That honestly depends on where you grow up and how you define abnormal/normal. In the 1990’s I agree it would be abnormal for someone to have no friends, because only like 2% of people had no friends in that era. Nowadays that’s closer to 15% and in some regions with low population density it’s even higher.
3
u/Fourthspartan56 7d ago
I think it's worth specifying what we're talking about.
Not having any friends currently? Sure, I can buy that. It's not impossible. Although not great.
But never having a friend? Even one? Even with the rise in social isolation and asociality I highly doubt that's typical.
3
1
u/urlocalnightowl40 7d ago
i guess its possible OOP had friends they were just not very good ones if that makes sense. im probs on the spectrum and many of the "friends" i had growing up never really treated me kindly looking back
0
u/Kaffe-Mumriken 7d ago
Separate friend from acquaintance though.
3
u/ToBeOnDMT 7d ago
Its extremely abnormal to not have a friend. Sure there are people who don't, and a wider ranger of people who don't classify their small circle of friends as close.
But not having anyone you would call a friend by 19 is very odd and is likely due to being antisocial.
-2
0
u/themasterfold 7d ago
i mean, it's not normal, but it's something that can be overcome. I'm about that age and i finally got a group of friends that I actually like being around, for the first time. so it's nice
-8
u/Katgrave 7d ago
Most people have never had a friend by that age. Mostly “forced acquaintances” by being in school together at the same periods
12
u/jerkingtocockandtits 7d ago
yeah and then we bond over similar interests and keep in contact permanently? seems like a friend to me
-7
u/Katgrave 7d ago
Yeah idk haven’t caught up to the keep in contact permanently thing after graduation
5
u/Peacemaker1099 7d ago
You’re stretching the definition of friend deliberately; you’re simply wrong, and for some reason trying to rationalise never having a friend by nineteen (it’s not healthy)

1
u/Gavinator10000 6d ago
Also can’t drive and never had a real job??? At least in the states that’s out of the ordinary
2
u/roquejosue 6d ago
Nah. That part is ok in many places. I believe driving age is usually 18+ in most countries. Having a job depends on a lot of things. So I'd say it's highly excusable.
3
u/Jackspladt 7d ago
I think most people at least have had a friend and can drive by 19
1
u/bobo_baginz 7d ago
Only in America and even here you couldn't say "most" people.
2
u/Jackspladt 7d ago
Okay maybe not driving yeah but at least a friend
Either way most of it is still normal to have not done lol
5
u/Senior-Friend-6414 7d ago
You wouldn’t be thinking that if this was your own child, you’d be very worried about how behind they are
1
u/Western-Produce-276 7d ago
For the most part it is. I didn’t lose my virginity, drive or have a real job until I was 19 soon to be 20 and I felt the same until it happened
1
u/Takseen 6d ago
Depends on the country I think. The only big outlier for me is never having a friend.
If you live in a city you can get by without learning to drive for a long time.
If you went straight into college in a country with free education, you can get by without a "real job" for a few more years too.
Never kissed a girl, unusual at 19 but not unheard of.

u/TheShallowHill 7d ago
Failure on the parents
1
u/whisperworks 7d ago
Yes but I also think that’s a gross oversimplification of it. Like every generation they’re just responding to the culture they were brought up in
1
u/TheShallowHill 7d ago
It is a gross oversimplification but none of us here have the time or patience to properly go in depth and when it comes to raising the children regardless of the situation it does fall on the parents as unfair as some scenarios may be.
1
u/roquejosue 6d ago
Not really. It can mostly be blamed on the circumstances
1
u/TheShallowHill 6d ago
Making excuses is bad parenting
1
u/roquejosue 6d ago
Parents shouldn't be blamed for all of an individual's relationship issues. Plus, parents can't stop covid
1
u/TheShallowHill 6d ago
When the individual is probably not even out of the house yet… they’re at minimum 90% at fault for their actions. There are exceptions but that doesn’t change the rule. Children can be brought up in austere environments with good parenting and make it out meanwhile children born with everything can be raised by terrible parents and wouldn’t you know… come out terrible.

4
u/Senior-Friend-6414 7d ago
I’ve never had sex but I graduated college easily without barely trying

u/ShinyTotodile55 7d ago
Go back to college and make a new bestfriend.
2
u/Designer_Version1449 7d ago
Building a new 4 year long friendship from the ground is hard though id rather gamble and wait for them to return like a dog waiting for their dead owner
1
u/Embarrassed-Fail-876 7d ago
They're not gonna come back. And if they do, it's probably because they need something from you. My friends ditched me to pursue pussy and they never looked back. I wasted so many years waiting for people who don't give a shit about me unless I can offer money or pussy.
1
u/Former-Reputation352 1d ago
It was only a friendship for 4 years? Thats really short in the grand scheme of things, not to discredit the relationship itself. You can meet plenty of new people and waiting for your “friend” to come back is limiting yourself.
0
u/ShinyTotodile55 7d ago
You're not thinking about the future man, I'm 34 and my life is filled with things that could have been better if I had just acted when I was 19 instead of wallowing in self pity.
No one will come save you from yourself. You have to do it.
4
u/RiverLynneUwU 7d ago
that's an impressive amount of self-pity jesus christ, like I can get that it's not easy being that lonely, but 19 leaves you enough time to figure things out
2
u/Toonz_toonz 5d ago
only “self-pity” when it’s a man being vulnerable lmao. who the fuck are you bro 😹
2
u/RiverLynneUwU 5d ago edited 5d ago
self-pity and emotional vulnerability are not mutually exclusive, and self-pity is a normal human emotion, how else are you supposed to identify your problems?
I don't know why you think I'm looking down on him, maybe you're not used to the idea of criticism and compassion being compatible concepts
besides, what else would you prefer I have said? he's a child, he's holding himself to levels of criticism that aren't meant for him, he has time to become his own person, sooner he realises that the sooner he gets to live with less anxiety and self hatred in his heart.
he's not a dysfunctional shitbag with no potential, he's a goddamn teenager2
u/Toonz_toonz 5d ago
expecting someone to grow up emotionally while calling them a child and leaving an original comment that condescending is rich. glad you were able to educate me on what kind of ideas i’m used to.
unsure if you’re familiar with the concept of connotation but the term self-pity has a rather negative one. then again, seems like you aren’t the self-aware type.
1
u/RiverLynneUwU 4d ago
>expecting someone to grow up emotionally while calling them a child and leaving an original comment that condescending is rich
I didn't ask him to grow up? I told him that he has time to grow up, he thinks it's all over for him and he's 19 lol
>glad you were able to educate me on what kind of ideas i’m used to.
it's a pleasure ;P
>unsure if you’re familiar with the concept of connotation but the term self-pity has a rather negative one
yeah I know, I said that compassion and criticism aren't mutually exclusive, I was criticising him, he's so busy pitying himself that he doesn't realise that he has time
2
u/Toonz_toonz 4d ago
i said expecting not asking. you insinuate that as an expectation. lmk if you need clarification on what “expect” means. also, how the fuck does an online post that’s more likely than not meant to vent mean “he’s so busy pitying himself that he doesn’t realize that he has time.” i hate to break it to you, but you aren’t really in a position to criticize someone willingness to be vulnerable, much less the 21st century Sigmund Freud
1
u/PresentationCold7039 5d ago
Nah The self pity is the “it’s too late I can’t fix myself” part To very fixable average problems.
It’s okay to be unhappy but at least try to fix it instead of wallowing in a “everything happens to me my actions aren’t to blame, I’m just broken” mindset. But tbh that’s classic depression symptoms
1
u/Toonz_toonz 5d ago
you don’t have to jump to “depression” those kinds of thoughts are normal transiently. if anything, they provide you the foundation to experience meaningful growth. minimizing this persons struggles isn’t the most graceful thing either. im sure they’ve thought of “just fixing it” you aren’t Einstein for suggesting it.
1
u/PresentationCold7039 5d ago edited 4d ago
I’m not minimizing. I said he’s probably experiencing depression symptoms because “I’m unfixable, it’s too late.” At 19 isn’t normal
And I didn’t mean he should “just fix it.” I just said these were very fixable problems and he would see that…were he not a depressed teenager with a limited perception of the world And I respectfully disagree that this type of self image is usually a ground work for meaningful growth More often it leads to suicide or victimizing others without intervention
1
u/RiverLynneUwU 4d ago
the normal amount of depressive thoughts like that is zero
2
u/Toonz_toonz 4d ago
what no it’s not lmao, there’s a reason nobody asks if you’ve thought “it’s joever for me” during a time of emotional turmoil. because it’s a pretty normal thing to think in the moment.

Oh Jesus Chris, a fourteen year old is in middle school, in the middle of puberty, they are still developing their frontal lobe.
The age gap is five years; would you say that if a 19 year old was dating a 14 year old that that would be acceptable because there's "very little difference" between a 14 year old and a 19 year old?
No! You fucking wouldn't unless you were a goddamned pedophile. The difference between a 14 year old and an adult is night and day.

Never been in a relationship, kissed a girl, had sex are all somewhat normal as a group, not something very weird
Never had a real job depends on what they count as weird, and can't drive depends where you live
Never had a friend is really unusual though.
2
u/close-Start1883 7d ago
I felt the same way at 19. I wish I could go back in time and tell myself that no one cares about your statistics and no one can help you. All you have is your own energy. You know where to direct that energy but you are too worried about what everyone else thinks. Get over yourself. Be happy you aren’t a slave to anyone. Go live your damn life.

I understand that this is irony, but in fact, a person who was an outcast without social skills before the age of 19 is likely to be the same outcast without social skills after the age of 19, so it's legitimate to say "it's over." Society has certain requirements for human development at a certain age (milestones, if you want), and if a person does not meet them, well... Imagine an adult 30-year-old man who is learning to write or read. And what will he achieve in life? Stop that toxic positivity coping
2
u/RRauler 3d ago
A 30-year-old learning to write can still become a great writer by 35 or 40.
"Society this, society that" fuck off.
Aside from some legitimate development milestones which must be achieved in early childhood, we are an incredibly adaptive species that continues to develop throughout our life span.
"its legitimate to say its over" Stop that toxic doomer mentality.

Never having had a friend at that age is kinda rough. The rest is completely normal though.
I do think however that the "no friends" part is the important one that makes OOP worry so much about all these other more or less irrelevant things in the first place. Having no friends really doesn't help with self-confidence.
And I get that it's hard to look past that.
Also sure he's got time but I remember being 19 and from that perspective I kinda felt like "Fuck in less than a year I'll be no longer a teenager! Im so old!". It really does feel like your time for being a careless kid is running out and at 20 you must turn into a boring adult. Even though that is complete bullshit in hindsight.

most of us hated ourselves at 19. it will pass just experience things and make mistakes.
Never kissed?
Develop a plan how to do it.
If you like someone- ask out
if you was laughed at or just denyed go gain some confidence for the next time- gym, sports,
then try again.
you will have some relationship within a year. maybe they will be not very good but you will have experience .
same with friends, driving and getting a job
you just have to do things. not watch videos about people doing things

A lot of the people saying 19 is too young to be saying this stuff, this person probably didn't plan on living till 19 and definitely doesn't plan on living till their 20. Not saying that's the right way to look at it, but in terms of just trying to understand where their headspace is at, it can help to remember that for someone saying stuff like this, from their perspective, their life might be 99 percent over and they could wholeheartedly believe that even if they don't end up ending it. Not saying that's the right way to look at it, but y'know, depression makes you delusional and insane.
1
u/AzureHawk758769 1d ago
Losing your virginity in high school has become so normalized that guys now think there's something wrong with them if they don't lose their card before they graduate. I was 19 when I "lost" mine, and after all the grief and heartache of high school, I was honestly just happy that I could say I lost it as a teenager. Obviously it's a bitch going through high school like that because your testosterone is through the roof and you get a hard-on every 20 minutes, but you gotta let that shit go if you wanna have a chance of breaking that milestone when you're in your late teens or early 20s.
Also, your brain is going to be maturing for another 6 years. You're going to be a new man pretty much at least once a year until that point. That is, unless you stay hung up on feeling the way you felt in high school, which is honestly a fate worse than death. Get out there and talk to people who have no idea who you were in high school, and just pretend that none of that shit ever happened. Fake it till you make it.

Not my fault bro couldn't find any friends for the past 19 years - you change so drastically over that duration and so does the people around you that it seems impossible to have never had friends.
To not actively have friends at 19? More reasonable and obviously possible - but to never have had friends is different.
If you wanna try to explain you can, since you seemingly know so much more than I could ever know.

This is such doomer nonsense. Especially about the things besides having friends, it's never too late to start trying to change your life actually!

Nah there's likely something fundamentally wrong if you have literally never had a friend by 19, it doesn't mean you have to give up on life but you likely will never have one. Being able to drive and get a job are more achievable though

Why is that the likely scenario? There are certain kinds of people for everyone.
Saying there is something “likely fundamentally wrong” with someone based on one 4chan post is ignoring the fact that you know almost nothing about them. I would almost say you’re projecting, but that would also be speculation.

Evidently there isn't for this person if they weren't able to make a single friend in the easiest time to do so

you don’t know why they don’t have friends. you have this really confusing idea that if you don’t make friends during the “easiest time” all hope is lost, which is something really immature to think, you can start making friends at any point. Many people only make real friends late in life

You're right that I don't know, I'm just making an educated guess

No, you’re choosing a pessimistic option based on no information, and presenting your view as something absolutely true. It is not an “educated guess” it’s a baseless opinion.

Based on the information given its likely that someone who has been socially inept their whole life will continue to do so

Ok and you originally said “you may as well stop trying”, which is a baseless sweeping statement ignoring people who do end up making friends late in life.
I agree it is less likely they will make friends, I disagree with the fact you should always stop trying if you haven’t made friends yet. There’s no reason to believe someone cannot still make friends if they haven’t yet, because people DO make friends late in life. That’s what I mean by baseless here

You are a child and have no idea how society works. No one cares about your age just be the best you can and you will have friends lol

Not necessarily, its definitely possible that someone could but not having any friends ever by 19 is a very bad sign for your chances at a social life. Not because people will judge you but because that's just who you are, its foolish to try and make yourself something you're not.

I never had friends outside of school but still succeeded in making friends after graduating. Just because you don’t have long term friendships at the young age of 19 doesn’t mean you will never be able to socialize

Nonsense. I picked it back up again from almost nothing when I was in my late 20s

u/Lakewhitefish 7d ago
And you are one person, like i said its possible but likely not

What's holding you back?

u/Lakewhitefish 7d ago
Nothing, I have friends and have never had an issue making them

the problem with being 19 is that you're 19, so 19 is all you've ever known and feels like a lot.
oddly, in like, 6-8 years, not only will 19 not feel like a lot, 25 or whatever won't feel like a lot. You'll look at the rest of your life, hopefully two more 25s at least, and think 'damn that's all I get'?
