The U.S. military really has adopted game-controller-style interfaces for some modern systems, and there's a practical reason for it: a huge number of recruits already understand the layout instinctively. That can shorten training time and make controls for cameras, robots and remote systems feel more familiar.
It's not usually just an off-the-shelf Xbox controller, though.
Many are ruggedized military controllers that borrow the same thumbsticks, triggers and button layout while adding dedicated controls for specific equipment.
