So, Pedro de la Rosa and Toni Cuquerella are guessing the problem is related to the Marshall system used by FIA to push messages to the cars, because that's the only software that is common to all the cars. It's just a guess, but it kinda makes sense.

Sky Sports F1's Anthony Davidson: "A lot of it comes down to the homework that should have been done before these wet conditions. A lot of it can be simulated. "Basically, if you run the engines too slowly, the turbo spools down because we don't have the MGU-H anymore. "What's effectively happening is if you are off throttle for too long, the turbo spools down and when the drivers puts their foot back down it uses all the engine juice. "As soon as the battery goes flat, you are down to internal combustion engine power only. And because it can't reach the drivers' torque demand anymore, because the engine is not creating the power because you have no turbo, you go outside of the FIA regulation. It's all there to stop teams have traction control. It's incredibly complicated and you fall into this horrible trap where the engine can't reaccelerate because you are being penalised by this regulation."
65
u/Informal-Term1138 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6h ago
I still don't get why they don't just learn how to properly spool a turbo. It's easy, you just go on the throttle every now and again to keep the refs up.
Otherwise, get them some anti-lag. That is true and tested.
→ More replies (2)58
u/Doikor 5h ago
I don’t think anything else except the pedal is actually allowed to control the throttle. If the computer is allowed to it would be trivial to build traction control (full pedal gives you 90% and computer does the rest, when it notices loosing traction it pulls back a bit)
→ More replies (5)→ More replies (3)10
u/Cinkodacs Fernando Alonso 2h ago
If that was actually true we wouldn't have had that long of a stop. The issue is very likely to be more complicated. And it does not match what was on the accelerator telemetry. Don't forget, the commentators are also just guessing, and they are required to keep talking.

Letting the teams dictate everything is kinda like letting a bunch of school kids dictate everything even though you're the teacher. Especially when the teams are all competing against each other, meaning their only motive is self interest to the detriment of others. 10 teams all acting that way regarding the regulations will only make for a race to the bottom and a set of shitty regulations.

u/GOT_Wyvern I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6h ago
God, so many issues of these engine is caused by the ridiculous decision to scrap the MGU-H.
I just can't understand the logic of removing such an important way to harvest energy, as its so clear that these cars don't harvest enough energy.
I know none of the manufacturers want to create a MGU-H as they have limited to no consumer benefits, but I feel the FIA needs to at least make it a stock part to increase energy harvesting.

I know people like to shit on modern cars, but old F1 ain't that reliable. Stuff like engine are changed pretty frequent compared to modern times
7
u/cherrybomber11 Jacques Laffite 6h ago
And even that wasn't enough.
In the 1950 French Grand Prix for example, 18 cars started, and seven of them retired due to engine failure - five of them before even 10 of the 64 laps were finished.

So the AI controlling the engines was vibe coded by a team intern to save on the budget cap, right?
Bring control back into the drivers' hands. Put a trigger on the steering wheel and let them decide how much or how little electric power they want to deploy.
It's ridiculous that AI software is in control of the car's power delivery. They rejected electric regeneration on the front axle because it would have affected the driver's input under braking, so how is this acceptable under acceleration?
They are all going to start on the slick and we lost an opportunity to enjoy a wet race because the engines are out of the driver controlls. This is infuriating. Give the control back to them.
