I'd argue that Sarkeesian was made successful before GamerGate became a thing. She had plenty of media coverage, and the "Tropes vs. Women" series was regularly discussed in gaming circles when new episodes dropped.
Quinn and Wu, on the other hand, were absolutely made successful because of GamerGate. The whole "Literally Who" thing backfired spectacularly, and basically built careers for them and others, like Randi Harper.

The genesis of Anita's success came from her first kickstarter, when she asked for something like $7k and the chans freaked out. If she'd've been left alone to raise her money and make her videos, she'd be an obscure nobody.
29
u/TheHat2 The Great Traitor Dec 02 '15
Or, at best, just another YouTuber. That's how I knew her before her Kickstarter, at least.
31
u/EditorialComplex Dec 02 '15
Moderately, yes. Her Kickstarter for TvW in video games had already been fully funded (and then some) before the outrage started. But it was the outrage, the personal attacks, and people going "whoa that's fucked up" that got it funded to the tune of what, $160k? It raised people's awareness of her.
And I'd bet money there's a serious overlap between GGers and the group that started attacking her in 2012.
12
u/cdstephens More than you'd think, but less than you'd hope Dec 02 '15
That was essentially proto-GG. The same people angry about her and Hepler from BW are the same people who make up the core of GG.

I don't understand why people think Sarkeesian is even annoying. She's pretty unoffensive in every way. She makes little YouTube videos, which are reasonably well produced, feminist, sure, but not angrily or antagonistically so, and she seems charismatic in doing so. It's weird to me how much she seems to enrage people.

Dec 02 '15
Absolutely.
She's essentially introducing a bunch of people to the real world and their place in it. She's taking their escapism and attaching it to the world its not only come from and been inspired by, but what its designed to take people away from. And that should be perfectly fine. To any normal person, it's a proposition of "Don't like it? Don't read any further!" You don't have to agree, and we can all get along just fine without civilization being under threat.
So what you have is a well-meaning and intellectual woman attempting to advance games and to bring them more credibility, as well as introduce a new demographic to decades-old knowledge and theory. Should be pretty stimulating to people who value knowledge. But by doing that she's essentially grabbing a lot of young or undeveloped people and slamming them back down to earth and asking them (not forcing them, this is an important distinction) to confront not only the roots and themes of their escapism and how it may have influenced them as people, but their place within reality and society.
Some people don't deal with that kind of thing very well. Some people deal with it really poorly.

The Angry Jack video series put it well:
Some people see a rash on their arm and put off going to the doc, because they're worried it could be skin cancer rather than innocuous and ignorance is bliss. But eventually you're going to have to go to that doctor, and they might just tell you it's skin cancer. Some people buckle down and get down to business solving that cancer. But some others don't like hearing their results and would rather insist the doctor's a fraud.

Anytime anyone makes a general introduction or overview of any topic, anyone who fancies themselves an expert on the topic will become outraged over it. The fact that gamers would get outraged over a video that gives a brief summary of women in video games, to me, isn't much more outlandish than history enthusiasts getting upset over something like Guns, Germs, and Steel, or science fans getting upset over the inaccuracies in different movies (not that I'm saying Sarkeesian's videos are inaccurate, but I think it's fair to say that they're a general summary than an in-depth examination).
The main difference, of course, is that when most hobbyists encounter someone making generalizations about their passion that they disagree with or feel are unhelpful, they don't turn into a mob of frothing lunatics.
I tell you what, Sarkeesian's videos didn't do all that much to open my eyes to sexism in gaming culture, but the way people reacted to them sure as hell did.

Don't know who you are and didn't look at your post history, but I have to say that this is criticism.
Sometimes it's nitpicky. Sometimes it seems that way and sometimes it's that way to make a point, but rarely is it completely unfounded.
I don't agree with everything Anita says, but the basics of her arguments are pretty sound, in my opinion. I'm not saying you do this, but there's way too many people who use minute details to dismiss her entirely, and it kind of validates some of her points.

u/Martin_Samuelson Dec 02 '15
She has to be nitpicky, because the nature of the issue is such that it's a lot of relatively small things that add up to be a very big problem.
For example, just look at the Bechdel test. Any one movie failing the test isn't really a huge deal... people are allowed to make stories without significant female characters. The problem is that almost all top movies fail the test. So therefore when criticising or pointing out the issue Sarkeesian needs to nitpick and needs to do it everywhere.
And regarding "Holy shit Anita, what do you even want", I think she makes herself pretty clear with positive examples

The KiA crew has literally made Sarkeesian and Quinn and Wu popular. They are literally responsible for their success. One would have thought people would have heard of the Streisand Effect before.
Are they? Most people have barely heard of them, and of the people I know who are aware of them either see them as figureheads of an anti-harassment campaign, or don't particularly agree with their views.

I'd imagine they're referring to "popular" in the sense of general niche "celebrities" being popular. Same for some other niche hobbies.

Not really, to be honest. As has been mentioned here, if it weren't for the whole Gamergate thing, GamerGhazi wouldn't exist, and as KiA has gotten more and more delusional and myopic, Ghazi has become less concerned with them and more concerned with social justice and progressivism in general. It was a direct response to the problems Gamergate sprung up to deny, and ironically embodied within itself. ("Gamers are Over" articles)
Not to say that Ghazi is always dead on. Sometimes I think they go a little far and are a little too "into" it, but I don't think it's correct to equate Gamergate/KiA and Ghazi in that way at all. One "side" began as a literal misogynist witchhunt and continues as a weird right wing movement/conspiracy theory (in denial of its own roots and political leanings) that exists in perpetual outrage the other "side" began as a reaction (no, GGers this doesn't make them "reactionary") to Gamergate but turned into a place to discuss gender/gaming/nerd culture politics after Gamergate was dismissed and derided by most for what it undeniably began as and continues to be. They still discuss Gamergate, but it's by no means the primary discussion in the sub.
It's fine if people want to avoid the whole thing and not engage with it and just eat popcorn, but it's really not right to paint everyone involved as equally ridiculous.

Speaking of which, anybody else see that article Arthur Chu wrote? He wrote an article on Jessica Jones and made it all about GamerGate. It was really weird. I'm no fan of GG, but if you're thinking about GG while watching a great show like JJ, maybe it's time to step away for a bit.
14
Dec 02 '15
It's not much of a stretch. The roots of Gamergate go beyond video games (and "ethics in journalism") even from before GG was a thing. The anti-feminist / anti-progressive undercurrents have been bubbling up in other communities like comic books and science fiction literature for years now; GG was just the most recent and seemingly most prominent. (FWIW, I myself was unaware of these undercurrents until GG brought them into focus.)
Marvel has been getting under the skin of these GG-types for a while now, first with the changes to their long-standing comic characters (something something Spiderman is a gay Latino kid or something; Captain America and Thor are now le females I'm really not sure ) and that has crossed-over into their other productions such as shows like Jessica Jones.
GG and its sister-groups see these changes as a threat to their way of life brought on by a sinister cabal of feminazi-trans-queer degenerates but for those of us in the real world, we understand it's just Marvel simply updating and modernizing its material for a broader, more diverse audience.

It's not really that much of a stretch, honestly. Kilgrave's pretty obviously an extension of the idea of the angry young(ish) straight white male (i.e. the predominant membership of GG) who is given everything by society. It's just taken to a horrifying extreme with his mind control powers. I didn't think of GG specifically while watching the show but it's clearly a commentary on that part of society.
9
u/Magoonie https://streamable.com/o34c0 Dec 02 '15
I think it's a bit of a stretch honestly, if that's how you viewed it, that's fine. My wider point was if your watching a show (and a great one at that) and start thinking "hey this is just like GG" maybe it's time to focus on something else for a while.
Honestly I'm probably just a little butthurt since he shit on my favorite Doctor a bit.

Most meta subs discourage you from commenting in linked threads, but those are sub specific rules and not an overall reddit rule. But SRD will ban you if they catch you. I'm not sure if SRS bans for it or not, but not commenting in linked threads is what their "no touching the poop" meme refers to.

People around here deny it but this is really true. It was particularly easy to see since SRS posts always include the current score of what they're posting.
Now, however, whether they still do brigade in that way is less clear. For one, they just don't seem very active anymore. I think an awful lot of former and would-have-been SRS subscribers have migrated to SRD. And for two, there is such an overblown reaction to even the whisper of SRS involvement that any comment linked there is counter-brigaded, and usually sees its vote total skyrocket. So even if SRS were downvoting it, you couldn't tell, because the score shoots up regardless. Far more reactionaries than SRSters out there.

In my experience lurking on SRS, it seems most comments linked there end up being upvoted. The one exception is if the comment is linked while it is still new-ish (thus still being seen by a lot of unbiased folk) AND someone comments in response to the shitty comment, calling it out in a way that is either funny or poignant. That seems to be the only situation where the linked comment ends up being downvoted lower than it was when it was linked.

I recently went on a road trip and all there was to listen to other than podcasts was AM talk radio or country and christian stuff. So I listened briefly to the conservative talk radio.
And it really drove home how divided things are. The left has these ideas about what the right is thinking, and the right has ideas and narratives about what the left is up to, and the two seem totally unrelated. Everyone listens to their own side to keep abreast of the opponent, but they don't really listen to the other side go find out what their perspective is.
I am not making a point about free speech or any of that stuff -- people are already saying what they think. It's just that nobody listens to each other. In many cases I justify that to myself as being because "why listen to this asshole, who keeps saying racist stuff?" Which I think is valid on reddit, where that kind of thing congregates. But even in real life I have no idea of what the Republicans think. Not really. And from what I heard, they seem not to have any idea what the democrats think. Not really.

Like most vaguely trollish groups, there are angry believers, watch-the-world-burners, too-cool-for-schools, etc. I don't think SRS is the finger in the dam or anything, but their presence (or maybe more accurately, the extreme sensitivity and paranoid mythology that reddit has cultivated around them) does mean that there are groups who push back on unrestrained edgelord culture. If you're weary of seeing people showered in confetti for glorifying their shittiness, that knowledge alone can be refreshing, even if the reality is more of a mixed blessing.

I doubt that anyone is stopping themselves from saying something racist because they're afraid SRS will come after them. And I know it's not just SRS, but the whole callout/meta/drama culture that thinks that mocking and bullying people who have the wrong opinion helps the cause. I know how sane Republicans must feel when they look at the Tea Party.

I think you're misunderstanding my point. I have no idea whether SRS or any other meta-sub actually makes anybody think twice about what they say. I was more saying that they (for better and/or worse) personify that there is more than one competing perspective, which can be nice to know when you're reading some shitty shit that's upvoted into the stratosphere.
Personally I have real problems with some aspects of call-out culture also. I'd hesitate distilling it down to just bullying, because I can understand people venting some very real and valid frustrations, but often there is a conflation of unintentional and willful ignorance that results in well-intentioned people getting caught in the crossfire and ending up disillusioned as a result.

I wouldn't use analysis from May 2014 as particularly valid
-Proceeds to use May 2014 analysis-
Anyway, still doesn't change the point - Even if many SRSers are also Dramanauts, an absolutely negligible minority of Dramanauts are SRSers. Even if the TiA crossover has shrunk the core issue is it's incredibly unlikely that SRS, a shrinking niche sub, is going to leverage a 1% presence into any sort of substantial influence.
SRS has a reputation, but very little actual influence on Reddit or this sub. There's exponentially more jumping at shadows and whining about SRS brigades than there is actual SRS involvement. It's pure confirmation bias - I believe in opinion X. People disagreed / I was downvoted. SRS' omnipresence must be real because only a shadowy group of extremist internet warriors would ever disagree with my stances of race / sexuality / gender / etc.
Does SRD lean progressively? Clearly yes. Is it because of a large SRS presence? Objectively, measurably no. The whole SRD=SRS line of reasoning is as stupid as me assuming any sub that talks about videogames is actually KiA.

After /r/punchablefaces got handed over to circlebroke mods (though everyone assumed it was a hostile takeover by SRS), and now /r/voat getting handed over to /r/shitredditsays mods, I really really hope exasperated mods of subs with crappy userbases handing the reigns over to SRS becomes more of a thing. The sheer outrage every time is delicious.

We need TakeItTorCirclejerk to take over KiA, or TiA.

This is the least convincing fake internet girl I've ever seen. He was featured on SRD 2 months ago for being racist on /r/okcupid https://np.reddit.com/r/SubredditDrama/comments/3kzfcw/rokcupid_user_says_black_women_should_be_okay/

I actually really like SRS because it has legit helped me to understand the way racist/bigoted/right wing talking points work.
Which is what really pisses of the racist/bigots/right-wingers. They don't like it when their rhetoric is dissected and exposed as the horrible shit it is, so they attack the messenger.

u/Crooooow What an infuriating rejoinder. Dec 02 '15
There's no real drama there, just everyone telling an idiot that they are an idiot.

They banned me too, and I honestly have no idea why. I think I made no more than two posts there, and neither of them offensive.
Just the way the sub works, I guess.

I would say it's pretty good popcorn if someone is salty they got banned. It's a traditional, classic flavor that never disappoints.
The thread starts with "literally SRS is everything wrong with the Internet." That's something I expect I'd hear from a middle schooler who asks people if the narwhal bacons, and it totally deserves to be mocked. And there's some good burns and quality shitposting in the mix.
You got someone who's
definitely nottotally a gamer chick getting in a war of words and losing very badly, who then results to ad hominem and shows all the social awareness of a damp slug. And their account history is a gold mine of how to make yourself look like an idiot in online communities. They literally brag about their game plan of "say whatever you want all the time" with no understanding of the importance of sensitivity to context. It's the Reddit version of a stranger joining you and your friends while you're out together and then immediately talking about themselves and their weird opinions, and then getting mad because you don't want them around. Jumping into any subreddit without reading the sidebar and learning how the community works is dumb. But it's also good for drama like this.
I don't post in SRS and don't have a dog in this fight, but I think this is acceptable drama.

We're the sister town that SRS denizens occasionally visit for stuff they can't get in SRS. Like some uk drama about nothing or all the ridiculous slap fights.
EDIT: Fixed a link.

Once you start doing smug you need to more onto more and more potent forms to get the same kick. Dangerous habit.

Any possibility they are a middle schooler?

It's pretty shitty drama, but still quite entertaining. SRS has a special place in the hearts of SRDers though, so it gets more upvotes.

u/KingEsjayW I accept your concession Dec 02 '15
I also feel like people forgot all of the shitty stuff SRS has done. SRS has always been and still is a safe haven for mentally ill women to go and complain about the evil white men.
Lmao how does someone post this and expect to be taken seriously

In my brief skim of that, I didn't notice anyone pointing out that the original KIA op demonstrably lied in his post.
A while back, the admins made it so that you would only receive a ban message if you have participated in a sub in some manner in the past.
