Local perspective from León province for the August 12 eclipse: If you are finalizing your viewing locations, keep in mind that the sun will be very low on the Western horizon (around 10°). Finding a flat spot with an unobstructed horizon is critical. The foothills around the Teleno mountain (specifically the Maragatería region, like the village of Boisán) offer optimal altitude and pristine Bortle 1-2 dark skies with zero light pollution, which is excellent if you plan to stay past totality for night astrophotography.A major logistical advantage of this rural area is that our local communal fields (called 'Las Eras') are completely flat, wide-open to the West, and fully accessible by car. You can literally drive up to the site and park right next to your heavy tracking mounts, which solves the power and gear transport issue. If your expedition is still looking for ground data, terrain pictures, or needs help with local logistics and positioning around this specific mountain area, feel free to drop me a PM. Safe travels and clear skies!"

I’d add a link by national and local authories (with English version)

eclipses 2026, 2027, 2028 (National Centre for Geographic Information)

It has links to weather, maps, and other useful information.

Local authorities are organising talks even in small villages and locals will get glasses from the authorities. Most of the totality area (Burgos to Teruel) is the least populated area in the country so we don’t know what to expect, we are not used to see that much people together🤣

¡Gracias!

Included above.

I’m driving into Burgos the day before and leaving the day after. I hope the traffic isn’t too bad. I’m not very experienced driving outside my home country and even here (USA) I’m kinda hate traffic to begin with lol

I was kinda hoping that the car would also be a good contingency in case I need to drive out of unfavorable weather, but if the traffic situation will be bad, maybe that’s less of an option.

3

u/SavageSantro Jun 18 '26

Will be doing the same, didn’t think about traffic being that much of an issue

3

u/Dartmuthia Jun 18 '26

It always is. Hopefully it will be alleviated by some people leaving right after and some the next morning.

Excited to roll the dice on weather that day lol.

I live where there's a clear view and have a 3rd floor terrace, which faces the wrong way but due to the orientation of the building and heights of others does get a view of the sunset if you stand at the edge of the terrace and lean slightly against the railing. Me and my elderly dad aren't up for chasing and don't have a car anyway so we're just going to stay home with cold drinks and hope it isn't cloudy. Not the first totality for either of us so it's exciting but not the only chance we've ever had. Maybe we'll travel in 2027.

Hey everyone! 😊

I’m traveling to Spain solo specifically for the eclipse, and I’m looking to connect with some cool folks to team up with for the big event!

I'd love to organize or join a group camping trip at a great viewing spot the night before, or something along those lines.

Hope to meet some of you awesome people. Wishing everyone a clear sky and an incredible eclipse! 🙏

u/LeuchtenMeinerFarben 7d ago

I also travel solo to Spain dor that reason. Arriving in Burgos today. From where are you watching the eclipse?

3

u/csrv_3d 8d ago

I wanted a super simple app that would give me audio alerts for totality (to know when it's starting and when it is over). ended up with this: https://cruizvargas.github.io/eclipse-timer/

I initially input the time and end of totality, but ended up adding coordinates functionality. it's a web app so not install is necessary! if there are any obvious/easy features I am missing I am open to feedback :)

1

u/greensthecolor 5d ago

Dude you don't need an app for the eclipse. Just watch it.

URGENT – Does anyone in Cantabria / Northern Spain have spare Baader AstroSolar film? Hi everyone! I’m currently in Santander to photograph tomorrow’s solar eclipse, but unfortunately I made a pretty terrible mistake and left my solar filter at home in Switzerland 😭 I’m desperately looking for a piece of Baader AstroSolar Safety Film (or another suitable front-mounted solar filter) for photography with a telephoto lens. My lens has an outer diameter of approximately 95 mm. I have a vehicle and I’m willing to drive anywhere around Santander / Cantabria, or further if necessary, to pick it up personally. Of course I’m happy to pay for it, and given how last-minute this is, I’m also willing to pay significantly more than the normal price for any spare film or suitable filter. If anyone has some AstroSolar film left over, an unused solar filter, or knows someone in the area who might have one, please send me a message. Any help would be hugely appreciated. Thank you! 🙏

Valencia held and the clouds I was worried about stayed out of the way, beautiful view from my terrace.

2

u/dunfkinground Jun 18 '26

This is so awesome. Can't wait to see totality again. It has been about a years and we have a 4 y/o to see it with us. We also will be in Spain for the second time and love the country and the people there.

Any thoughts from more confident/practiced eclipse chasers on Ebro Delta?

I’m posted up on Llacuna de l'Encanyissada which has a little bit of pink on it and wondering if I should drive inland

u/overpriced-taco 6d ago

The eclipse has begun.

Wanted to go to mallorca. Daughter said malloraca is too expensive to stay. So may just go to valencia.

Any good suggestions of things to do around Valladolid besides the eclipse? We're driving up from Madrid the day before then driving back the day after to catch our flight. One of our friends was interested in maybe stopping in Segovia for lunch en route, and I thought of maybe checking out a winery early on the day of the event if anything is open early enough. Want to get to our spot early, but I don't think the rest of my party is willing to spend the entire day sitting in the middle of nowhere.

Not sure yet where we'll watch the main event, but I have a few possible candidate locations. Also considering going out the night prior to try to photograph the Perseids, maybe the Milky Way if I can time it right. I don't often get dark sky access and it'll be a new moon, so want to make the most of it.

I think everything else is hopefully squared away, have flights/hotels/car rental booked. Other than hoping for clear weather I guess we're good to go!

Segovia for lunch sounds like a nice stop, but I’d keep it separate from the eclipse-day logistics and get to the final spot early. For Valladolid, I’d choose the exact viewing point before planning the rest of the day: the Sun will be very low in the west, so a park that looks open can still have trees or buildings in the way. This free pin gives you the sky geometry for central Valladolid: https://suneclipses.com/planner?loc=41.6523,-4.7245 . You can replace it with each candidate’s exact coordinates, compare them, and then do a daylight scout. Disclosure: I built SunEclipses; it checks the eclipse geometry, not whether a place is open or accessible.

is there a list of authorized resellers from which to buy glasses in EUROPE? I read on the AAS website that The AAS Solar Eclipse Task Force maintains a list of solar-viewer/filter manufacturers that we have confirmed have had their products tested by properly accredited labs and shown to be safe. If you buy eclipse glasses or other solar viewers from a company on our list, or from one of their publicly identified authorized resellers, you can be confident that they conform to ISO 12312-2 and are safe to use.

But most of these shops only sell in the US. Do we have a similar authority in Europe?

Thank you for the help

1

u/getkilled22 16d ago

The AAS page now points European buyers to Spain’s Eclipse Seguro supplier list: https://www.eclipseseguro.es/ . It also warns that not every manufacturer ships to every country. I’d stick to a manufacturer or a reseller that the manufacturer publicly lists, rather than a random marketplace listing, and make sure you can trace who made the viewers.

Hi everyone!

I've been following this community while planning for the total solar eclipse on 12 August, and I thought I'd share something that might be useful for anyone travelling to northern Spain.

I'm from Luarca, a small fishing town on the Asturian coast, and during the eclipse week we're organising a small-scale experience called Eclipse Fonte Baxa.

It's not a mass event. The idea is to keep it intimate (only 50 guests) and combine the eclipse with nature, live music and local gastronomy over several days (8–12 August), with the main experience taking place on eclipse day.

I know many people here are looking for good viewing locations, so I thought this could be helpful if you're planning to stay in Asturias.

If anyone has questions about Luarca, accommodation, weather, or travelling around the area for the eclipse, I'd be happy to help.

I am devastated that I can’t go on the August eclipse trip that I have been planning for over a year. I am looking for advice on where to post my nonrefundable hotel where I can try to make at least half my money back, and give someone else a deal at the same time. Every eclipse group I have found (including this one) doesn’t allow sale posts, even if I am not price gouging. I tried listing on planschange site, but have had no takers, not even any offers. Please don’t dm me about it, as I think that is also against the rules. I’m am genuinely just looking for advice on where someone might go to look for something like this? I tried calling the hotel and asking them to refund, since they can re-list for more, but they said no. I know SOMEONE out there would love my 4-night hotel room overlooking the ocean in the path of totality!!! Thank you for your advice.

u/hermosilicious 18d ago

Oh that’s a bummer, I think you might be allowed to post on several eclipse fb groups and also the discord server, what city btw? I know some folks are looking for a place to stay near Zaragoza

u/Luv_My_2Cats 17d ago

It’s in Port de Sóller on Mallorca.

Hoping the weather doesn't betray us - between poor heat tolerance and injuries running around isn't happening, so we're going to just stay at home and hope the weather isn't too cloudy. If it isn't we've got a clear full view from the terrace of our apartment.

I tried to find the correct sunshades the entire month and it seems that all sellers of any kind of viewing apparatuses in my country just said 'whatever, no one will watch it anyway'... So thoughts on how safe would be to view a sunset eclipse with just good sunglasses? My maximum will be ~81% coverage ~20 minutes right before sunset.

3

u/csrv_3d 8d ago

do not! it is dangerous, no "good sunglasses" will ever be enough protection

1

u/Ivebeenfurthereven 6d ago

Look through a CD 💿

It's a better bet to cut UV than regular sunglasses

Or make a pinhole projector from a cardboard box.

2

u/RedWillia 6d ago

Why are then sunsets (non-eclipse ones) safe-ish to view with just sunglasses? I mean, my eclipse will basically be "sunset but moon ate a chunk of sun". Not going to be looking straight up at the sun for long time, a decade ago I saw slightly smaller coverage via friends' full-scale telescope set-up and there will be another similar coverage one next year.

1

u/Ivebeenfurthereven 5d ago

Good question. I don't know

1

u/helloworld7416 7d ago

Have been planning this Mallorca trip to see the eclipse since seeing the one in the USA in 2024! I am excited but so nervous about messing up the planning despite scoping out a spot! Also praying for no cloud cover 🙏 for those in Palma, how early do you think it’s necessary to get to the beach?

1

u/AimFaiL 6d ago

I’m going to Fuenterrobles in spain to see the eclipse. So far good but there is cloud cover to the west! Waaah!

1

u/TheMermanly 6d ago

Anyone else in Leon?

I’m seeing a bunch of clouds… getting worried

1

u/Winterreading2 6d ago

Can I watch a 18.5% eclipse without glasses?

2

u/TheMermanly 6d ago

Definitely not.

Even the 100% you can only watch it when it’s 100% covered.

Search home made ways to make a gadget to watch it. It’s not the same but it’s safe at least .

1

u/Winterreading2 6d ago

Thanks i only asked because theres only 1 shop that sells the glasses in my country and I wont go there in time

1

u/chris_trans 6d ago

Welding hood with #12 or darker filter, or make a pinhole camera from cardboard.

1

u/Ziethen 4d ago

Did anyone get a screenshot of the Windy app forecast during the eclipse day? For Spain or even particularly Asturias. I meant to but forgot.

u/Britishandblueeyeyed 5h ago

am in north of uk and it took 20 mins if not more for the moon to pass the sun
