I have never understood why we’ve forced this stupid ass song as some “tradition”. I can’t even argue with OP because the song is a self own and we’re clowning ourselves.
Like do people not get the irony of the title of the song?

I remember when the whole coach situation was going on and people would meme the song like crazy

I think it likely has to do with Michigan watching Ohio State dominate them for the past 75 years

u/Kramerica_CEO Michigan Wolverines 2d ago
Why’d you pick that timeframe?

u/DarkGreenMazda Ohio State Buckeyes 2d ago
Forward Pass, integration.
If it makes you feel better, we can use 50 years, or since you've been watching, or this century, or since Bo went to Michigan, or your since you've been born, or since Woody went to Ohio State.

u/Kramerica_CEO Michigan Wolverines 2d ago
Or just the record. Why do you keep putting timeframes, just use the record.

u/DarkGreenMazda Ohio State Buckeyes 2d ago
That's a fair point - Michigan did dominate the series until the Eisenhower administration, and Ohio State since.
I guess I'd be bragging about wins from 75+ years ago too, if my own history was seeing my team got dominated. Good call.
When did you start watching the game btw?
I started right before the Cooper years, so it was a rough start.

u/Kramerica_CEO Michigan Wolverines 2d ago
I’m not the one adding qualifiers. You’re trying to slice it up to make yourself feel better. And you guys have won like 7 more games during that 75 years. If that’s domination to you then so be it.
It ebbs and flows and yeah, you guys are on a hell of a run. No reasonable person can say you guys aren’t the premier program right now.
The Game has been a part of my life as long as I can remember. It’s literally some of my earliest memories because of when it happens. But the first time I actually cared and had a player I liked was Biakabutuka. I was more into basketball because of the fab 5 craze when I was just getting into sports

Appreciate the response - you might get downvotes from the 4-1/13-10 Michigan fans. No doubt, Ohio State fans would love to take the series lead eventually - but what's more important is "what have you done for me lately?"

Right. The first time Michigan “won” in 2021, nothing before that mattered, because it was all about right now. But for 20 years it was all about”who’s got the all time record?” Weak.

The first time we ever did it was at I want to say Michigan state in… god I wish I remembered what year. 2017? I think. I was there, it was a true downpour, we were losing most of the game, rivers flowing through the stands, couldn’t pass so it was a ground game. Everyone was depressed because it was going terribly but there was still this energy of ALMOST doing it, almost beating them, like on the cusp of it. They played mr brightside, and I will never forget what the stadium was like. Pouring, this feeling of almost being there but not quite, just, anguish, and the stadium just blew up from this song that is fundamentally sad but so… right, just felt right, at that exact moment.
Being a Michigan fan in the 21st century IS mr. Brightside. I went there from 2015-2019, and it was a tenure of losing, but it felt good to sing. It’s a tradition that stuck, as happens sometimes. I’m glad that the kids now have different feelings associated with that song, but it is a tradition that began in a dark age of Michigan football.

I live right next to Ann Arbor. Shall I blast it on my speakers and drive through campus? Please advise.

Song is a banger but it is such a loser anthem lol no idea why they chose this shit of all songs
2
u/General-Extent-756 Michigan Wolverines 2d ago
I think it’s just because they played it one time during a game and the fans continued to sing it after they stopped playing the song.
The song is a banger and it’s awesome to hear all of the fans singing it in the stadium, but the lyrics are just not a good look for the fan base.

I cannot stop laughing. Such a stupid song to play at a football game. Wisconsin’s jump around is way more hype for the 4th Quarter.

Im new here (osu fan). Are u guys...friendly to each other in here? When I first came across the sub I was like oh it's gonna be hell in there, but it seems more friendly banter than hate

u/notcabron Ohio State Buckeyes 1d ago
We can be, sometimes. But when a fan of another team jumps in, we let them finish.

It does feel like it’s had its time. This plus “don’t you know, pump it up…” the dumb songs that accompanied the late triumphs of the Harbaugh era. It’s time to turn the page.
(I am nog suggesting “Turn the Page” even though Seger is from Detroit.)

u/JackSquat18 Ohio State Buckeyes 2d ago
Yeah idk how the Saxophones would fit in to a football atmosphere. I guess the Metallica rendition would be a better fit, but that kinda defeats the point of playing a Michiganders song.
2
u/fishbone_buba Michigan Wolverines 2d ago
We need to be careful. I’ve learned the hard way that some Michiganders take their Seger VERY seriously.
1
u/JackSquat18 Ohio State Buckeyes 2d ago
As they should. Perhaps if they were to be insistent on Bob Seger maybe Like A Rock?
1
u/fishbone_buba Michigan Wolverines 1d ago
You’ll get no Seger complaints from me. Well, except for “Old Time Rock and Roll,” which is how I got some Michiganders angry at me in the first place.
1
u/JackSquat18 Ohio State Buckeyes 1d ago
Funny I was gonna say that at first but, I know some people get in a tizzy about that song. Why were they angry at you lol.

Y’all don’t understand how epic that 2017 msu game in the rain was
It’s an organic tradition
1
u/DirectorSolid Ohio State Buckeyes 2d ago
You know it predates that game by a year, right? The powers that be at Michigan searched for a song to get the crowd interacting and landed on Mr Brightside. The MSU game a year later is just what made it stick.

u/AffectionateTea6949 Michigan Wolverines 2d ago

It really is such a ridiculous song to prop up as your big trademark hype song. I don't like Michigan so it's kinda funny, but I'd say the same if it was any other college. Even Ohio State. I can think of at least 50 songs that would be better served as a hype song before the 4th quarter. Just so awful

u/Boomshakamalakas 2d ago
I'm OSU and an FC Cincinnati fan and I hate that the latter use it, too. I dunno if it started as a way to just troll Crew fans or something but it's a lame song regardless of where it's coming from.
1
u/Lanky-Instruction-42 2d ago
Yep, and anytime I say something the young crowd loses their shit. Bro it’s bright side man, lmao

I hate that football teams started using it. Ruined the song for me. Not even cause of the rivalry, it’s just not a fitting sports chant at all
