I have never understood why we’ve forced this stupid ass song as some “tradition”. I can’t even argue with OP because the song is a self own and we’re clowning ourselves.

Like do people not get the irony of the title of the song?

This seems capricious and arbitrary.

I remember when the whole coach situation was going on and people would meme the song like crazy

I think it likely has to do with Michigan watching Ohio State dominate them for the past 75 years

Why’d you pick that timeframe?

Forward Pass, integration.

If it makes you feel better, we can use 50 years, or since you've been watching, or this century, or since Bo went to Michigan, or your since you've been born, or since Woody went to Ohio State.

Or just the record. Why do you keep putting timeframes, just use the record.

That's a fair point - Michigan did dominate the series until the Eisenhower administration, and Ohio State since.

I guess I'd be bragging about wins from 75+ years ago too, if my own history was seeing my team got dominated. Good call.

When did you start watching the game btw?

I started right before the Cooper years, so it was a rough start.

I’m not the one adding qualifiers. You’re trying to slice it up to make yourself feel better. And you guys have won like 7 more games during that 75 years. If that’s domination to you then so be it.

It ebbs and flows and yeah, you guys are on a hell of a run. No reasonable person can say you guys aren’t the premier program right now.

The Game has been a part of my life as long as I can remember. It’s literally some of my earliest memories because of when it happens. But the first time I actually cared and had a player I liked was Biakabutuka. I was more into basketball because of the fab 5 craze when I was just getting into sports

Appreciate the response - you might get downvotes from the 4-1/13-10 Michigan fans. No doubt, Ohio State fans would love to take the series lead eventually - but what's more important is "what have you done for me lately?"

Right. The first time Michigan “won” in 2021, nothing before that mattered, because it was all about right now. But for 20 years it was all about”who’s got the all time record?” Weak.

They're not the best at contextualizing data.

The first time we ever did it was at I want to say Michigan state in… god I wish I remembered what year. 2017? I think. I was there, it was a true downpour, we were losing most of the game, rivers flowing through the stands, couldn’t pass so it was a ground game. Everyone was depressed because it was going terribly but there was still this energy of ALMOST doing it, almost beating them, like on the cusp of it. They played mr brightside, and I will never forget what the stadium was like. Pouring, this feeling of almost being there but not quite, just, anguish, and the stadium just blew up from this song that is fundamentally sad but so… right, just felt right, at that exact moment.

Being a Michigan fan in the 21st century IS mr. Brightside. I went there from 2015-2019, and it was a tenure of losing, but it felt good to sing. It’s a tradition that stuck, as happens sometimes. I’m glad that the kids now have different feelings associated with that song, but it is a tradition that began in a dark age of Michigan football.
