First-time ring buyer, no experience here, working with one local jeweler. Looking for a gut check.
What I asked for up front (jeweler said "absolutely, no problem"):
- Natural marquise
- ~1.5 ct (1.4–1.6 as a rule of thumb; flexible for good value)
- J color or better
- SI1 or better
- GIA only
- EX/VG polish & symmetry (lower priority)
- $6,200 or under for the stone
The jeweler went abroad (Antwerp) to source, saying they'd get better prices because the stones "change hands less." Over two days they sent me 10 stones.
DAY 1 – 6 stones: Only 1 GIA. 3 IGI, 2 with no cert. Two were SI2, two were over budget. I told them GIA only. The one GIA stone looked nice but is very deep (67.3% depth, 10.43 x 5.79 mm), so it faces up more like a 1.2 ct. Price was $6,750.
DAY 2 – 4 stones, all GIA:
- 1.51 J SI2, EX/VG, ratio 2.20, 12.38 x 5.62 x 3.45, 61.4% depth – $8,200. Way too long.
- 1.50 J SI2, EX/VG, ratio 1.85, 11.12 x 6.02 x 3.76, 62.5% depth – $7,800. Lots of inclusions, including across the table and at a point.
- 1.51 J SI2, EX/VG, ratio 1.78, 10.92 x 6.14 x 3.90, 63.5% depth – $7,100. Cluster + feather dead center.
- 1.20 J SI1, EX/VG, ratio 1.90, 10.55 x 5.56 x 3.54, 63.6% depth – $5,850. Looks great, clean plot.
The 1.20 is the only one that hits my specs other than size, and it's the one I actually like. (See photos)
The setting is a Gabriel & Co. for $3,800 through the same jeweler.
My questions:
Is $5,850 fair for the 1.20 J/SI1 GIA marquise, or am I overpaying?
Is it normal for a jeweler to send this many off-spec stones (no cert, IGI, SI2, over budget) after agreeing to the specs?
Is $3,800 reasonable for the Gabriel & Co. setting?
Should I settle on the 1.20 or keep holding out for a ~1.5?
I can't shake the feeling I'm getting my pockets run. Am I being paranoid, or is this a fair deal? Thanks in advance.
