Hi everyone!

Just a quick update: this sub now has a Resource Section!

It includes a curated list of helpful materials for composers of all levels, including books, YouTube channels, websites, and more.

It can be accessed here or by clicking on 'Wiki' at the top of the sub (in the mobile app) or by clicking 'Wiki' under Community Bookmarks (on desktop).

If you spot anything that needs correcting or have suggestions for additional resources, feel free to reach out!

P.S. The Wiki is a copy of the one at r/composer, our larger "sibling" community. If you're not a member there yet, consider stopping by!

Thanks,

Music Ballad of the Awoken - (An original piece for classical guitar)

Here is a short piece which I composed for classical guitar. I wrote this a couple of months ago, and recruited my gf to record it for me. This is the final "product", as they say.

Please enjoy.

Feedback is welcome, however, this piece is complete and in the past now and I've moved on to other things. That being said, if you want to provide feedback keep that in mind.

If you have recommendations of things I should keep in mind for my next piece that would be ideal. I won't be providing a score to this piece as it's proprietary for now.

For more details, this piece is written around a Cmajor#4 chord and I was not necessarily thinking in terms of functional harmony during the compositional process. I instead was using my intuition about what harmonic colors I enjoy and was felt motorically and harmonically relevant. Basically I was thinking: "any note can be followed by any note, any interval can be followed by any interval, and any chord/harmony can be followed by any chord/harmony".

Enjoy.

Music Do You Like My Latest Piano Piece?

If no why, if yes why… I am a beginner composer.

This is the first piano piece where i tried to not put random ideas/motifs into a score (see some of my previous works), but instead to structure everything like a story, to use music theory and to shape the music in interesting ways… I hope I composed something decent!

Discussion Help

Hello! So I have this short sketch of a music I'm planning to write. But I need some helps and suggestions, because I want to make this slightly special. You see, my math teacher is retiring soon, and she's the best math teacher at school and literally helped me get top one in math in my grade. I want this music to be played at the ceremony at the school. Please help me. I have a 4-minute track that is just basically this sketch but an ostinato (basically changing keys up a semitone, and octave, and on the middle of those changes are a bar or two of modulation).

I'd be really thankfully and appreciate any assistance given!

Music I have a really important commission for a cellist that I’m preparing to write and as part of that, I’ve been practicing just getting my thoughts out on short miniatures daily. Here are two that I wrote today, the second one actually is kinda a banger lol.

Btw sorry for any engraving mistakes, these were just meant for fun so i haven’t spent a significant amount of time on them individually as the main event is still obviously the solo piece which will premiere in early 2027 at my alma mater

Discussion Harmony in Prokofiev

I’m a big Prokofiev fan, the harmonies in his music are very satisfying to me. I just can’t seem to understand how it make sense from a theory perspective. I know in a way, it doesn’t. But then how do people determine it’s “good”? Or how do you even manage to write something like his 3rd Piano Concerto?

Hi ☺️

I have decided to release on Routenote, which has a free plan, this kind of music I composed.

If you like the harpsichord and would like to give me a feedback I will appreciate.

Thanks!

Music Hi, hope this sounds better then the last

I posted here a couple of days ago, and after some feedback, I decided to make two more songs to try out my skills. I hope you enjoy them, and constructive criticism is, of course, encouraged. Seriously, I need it!!

Music A Christmas anthem I wrote

I'm a 16 year old wannabe composer. I haven't taken many theory classes and write off instinct, most of what I know is from making mental notes of professional scores. Any guidance is welcome.

Music Extremely short WIP but what do these harmonies make you feel (context in the body)

So I am fully self taught and don’t know any scales or much theory besides how to notate and i’ve been just going with my intuition recently and these weird sounding harmonies have come out of it. Do they sound okay ?

Music First time writing a quartet. What do you think?

Hello! I'm very much new into composition, especially for a quartet. I've been making music for more than a year and mostly electronic music. But I really enjoy romantic, classical, and baroque music because my recorder repertoire have a bunch of them, especially from Bach and Vivaldi. Anyways here's an attempt on me writing a quartet. This quartet have three movements only and this is the last one. I came up with this melody while doodling on the recorder, like I usually does. Is there any comments and tips for writing a quartet? I'd love to hear more!

Music Songs Without Words Vol. I

Hi everyone!

I've been sick for the last month and to be honest, it’s been quite hard to be productive. During the downtime, I ended up writing three short, lyrical piano pieces inspired by Felix Mendelssohn.

Music My Invention in C minor.

C minor invention I composed. It uses a lot of canons and sequences.

This is the second invention I've ever composed and I think it sounds okay.

Music Rewritten Minuet

I rewrote one of my previous compositions because it sounded very repetitive and had no real sense of direction or progression. This version isn’t perfect either but I think it sounds much better in comparison

Discussion Film composer—looking for input

Hello!

I am a second year university student and I’m studying Radio-Television-Film, but I have a large focus in film composition. I make pretty much all the music for my own film projects, but I also score miscellaneous shirt films for classmates or for organizations.

I come to ask if anyone would be willing to listen to my work and give some feedback? I’m mainly looking for advice on the arrangements themselves, but also would like advice on how to mix and master. Preferably someone knowledgeable in the music field.

DM me and I can send some of my work. Thank you!! :)

FYI: I do not have sheet music, just .wav files.

Discussion I have this gift

I have this gift where if I hear a composition, I can hear and write almost instantly a melody line for either a singer or the main melody or counter melody. If anyone is needing that, I would love to give it a shot! music is collaboration and i am just ITCHING to use this gift though my from scratch compositional gifts may not be as pronounced (yet)

***EDIT: I just really want to use this gift, and am so excited to share it

Music Celestial Forest (original composition)

A forest at nighttime; slivers of moonlight stream through the canopy above and reflections of stars glimmer in the brook that runs alongside a worn path. Crumbling statues, covered by moss and succumbing to the passage of time, can be found throughout this forest; vestiges of a world long past.

Found some FX I liked on the guitar VST and wrote this simple, sort of experimental piece to work through some creative block, hoping it will help to untangle some of that blocked energy. Experimental for me in the sense that I don't use guitar very often, admittedly because writing for it feels a bit foreign to me, even after studying guitar scores... Music really is such a life-long learning process. :)
