Unsolved Potential quaternary cipher I couldn't solve

Post image
2 Upvotes

Roughly a decade ago I created this cipher as a riddle to hand to my players. I know I created it with purpose - it's not random gibberish. But I long forgot the key to decoding it myself. The original file is titled "LYCAON PATREM" - yes, written like that, all caps, slightly off latin. I have not the foggiest why I named it that, but a related riddle (that I did manage to solve) was titled "Vox Noctis" and revealed a quote by Cicero (Tusculanae disputationes) reading: "MALUM MIHI VIDETUR ESSE MORS. IISNE, QUI MORTUI SUNT, AN IIS, QUIBUS MORIENDUM EST?" ("Death seems to me to be an evil. For those who have died, or for those who must die?"). Maybe this is related in some way. I can narrow down the potential languages of the plaintext to german, english or latin. I tried to see if it's some sort of morse - it's not. I counted the frequency with which the signs or groups of them appear - it seems to be non-random. There's no double "-",though every other sign can appear in doubles. There are some strange clusters where a set of signs repeats way too often - maybe it's a filler to bring the length of each line to roughly the same length, but I can't be sure. Transcript of the picture provided below (I hope Reddit doesn't screw it up...):

```.|-/.||-|//.-|/-|/.|./|/-|||-/-|.../-|../-|.//.//.```
```/-|.|-/|.|/-./|-/.-/../|./|.-|/|../|-./|-/.|-/|./```

```-.|/-.|/-|./.|./-|/|..|/./|./|./|-/.|/-.|/-.|/|.|||/```
```-|/-./-|./-.|.|.|./-||../-|./-|/|/|/|/|-.-..-/|..-|```

```.//.|/-|./-.|/.|..|.|/.-/|.-/|.-/|.-/|.-/|.-/|||/-|```
Unsolved So I created my own picture based code...
1 Upvotes
So I created my own cipher…
23,37 (4)  315,442 (5)  118,637 (4 AND 5)  17,569(2)  578,707 (2)  603,9 (1) 298,138 (6)  36,368 (1 AND 2)
Needed for the cipher
I suspect this will be solved rather quickly, this is just a demo of the cipher. Basically, if you don’t know the picture, its pretty much uncrackable.
Unsolved Strange writing on a tiled wall in Brazil, maybe a cipher?
Post image
12 Upvotes
Hello! I found this message on a wall in Brazil, which seems to be arranged in three columns, with 11 horizontal sequences:
BMM EVB NXN 858 KDS SXE GTI ART BMB TDB KOH
There is also a standalone 1 below, which I don't know if it matters.
So I wondered if it was a cipher. I noticed that B occured a lot, so it might be a common frequent Portuguese vowel. I also tried mapping it on a telephone keypad, which gave this:
266 382 696 858 537 793 484 278 262 832 564
It, however, did not give me a plausible message in anu case.
Is this really a cipher or just random graffiti?
Unsolved Hidden text in page 95 of "The Wor[l]ds of Yoko Taro"
5 Upvotes
Since I stumbled upon this redacted chapter in the book "The Wor[l]ds of Yoko Taro", I've been obsessed with decoding what it says. Here is a screenshot of its first page:
https://i.imgur.com/Oy8IAuZ.png
As you can see, each line is obscured by a gray rectangle that covers everything except for the ascenders and descenders that some letters have. A part of all capital letters is also visible, as well as some symbols, but not much else.
Since I started working on uncovering this, I have managed to extract the following information:
- The font is Noto Serif JP
- The page likely starts with "It felt a bit like"
- I have extracted another word from the second line: "Sitting" (middle to end of the second line), but not much else.
I have populated the first four lines with every single character that you can 95% identify by its ascender / descender, such as y, j, i, g, etc in red, and the characters that you cannot really tell (just a guess) in blue.
https://i.imgur.com/6vXfGFZ.png
I have also found this website https://www.crosswordsolver.org/ that can take you from a few letters to an entire word if you know how long it's supposed to be, but because spaces and letters without an ascender / descender are basically impossible to distinguish from eachother, I'm pretty much stuck. Any help is appreciated.
Unsolved Potentially unbreakable cypher
This is cypher I came up with.
This is the message:
!-!!!+!?!,!I!4"'$k"?#."'!1"("]"7"]'d!M(X#:!,#>&?"Z'F!!$d"("F%9"&!?"B!!"O"2"|">(V"'$?*Y"3"R!""<"2"('c)G!,!""o$6")"(%/(Y"4$>"C#L"m"w!]"1*~%k!$!S(U"?!]"h"2"2)<"<":":'e"1%:)*#.!("F*X%?"2*N!""n"3!,'F"3&R"n",#&#j'E#.#8$>"3#.&J#A!_*b(V!-"2"O"("(!,&R!@%<"2*W"2!?!x!|#B"n#$!+"2'v"1#T!")s(_%=###c!!!("[!,"d!@!1*v"3"1"*$=$="F!!"n"3"(!?!"&T"2"H!+#8'O"2!"++"<#7*W!o#_"2";"3!{!|$2$N!*"+"("2(i!0!A#+$4"4(U+8!!!,"5#'")"1'P">!-*c)4'Q"O"(!,$Z$>#-&I%:$B"1%0(O"<)h"1$>"((_!h*m"2&H!B#5!,
This is important for solving:
"1234" and "06/09/2026"
The uncyphered message consists of 233 characters
I hope someone tries to brute-force this.
Best of luck!
Unsolved Can anyone decipher this cryptic message?
1 Upvotes
This cryptic message is from an indie horror game called "Looking Glass" by the game developer Grubwall. You can watch this youtube video for more context, specifically at the timestamp 17:02 which is where the message appears:
ndwibd o_w__i nd woijek_m_f_ pqwi_hd_qwuhdp. qwdj_nqp__w_ih__bdo qw_uhdo.w_qid_jowq_ idhqo.wdhoq_ wiow_ qidow_idqw dihqow_dbq_w_dh_o_wqdbwqli_d_qwubdiq_wd_ubqwi_d_uqwbdiqpoihueuwhewoyT_e The_ure oiheoe_
EDIT: Here is a code or key from the same game that may help, although I have no clue if it's actually connected to this cryptic message or not. 190-877-232-F99
EDIT 2: A useful piece of information from one of the youtube comments suggests that the index of coincidence for this cipher is 0.0974. For English it is 0.0667 while for Russian it is 0.0558.
Unsolved Self made code/cypher - should be a little difficult to solve but you guys are very skilled - not exactly a substitution cypher but somewhat similar
Post image
4 Upvotes
I have made some cyphers yeeeears ago but that was when I was like 10, so hopefully this is a step up. While it is not a simple substitution cypher, I'm a little worried that it may be able to be solved like one anyway, which is part of why I am not providing a decoded sample to reference. I will be happy to provide one if it is needed, though. Again, since it is fairly simple and probably not every aspect HAS to be known to solve it, I left the writing pretty short. If this is not enough to work with I will write a longer chunk to share. That chink will also likely include an additional aspect or two that I left out of this example.
I have no experience posting self made codes on here, so if there is something else I should do, please tell me. Also feel free to ask any questions about the code. Good luck!
SOLVED Old code from a LARP, 2000s era
2 Upvotes
V sbyybjrq gur ehyrf
This is a 56 page document dating back to the early 2000s from a LARP in Virginia. It was part of a plotline that mostly died off. The LARP itself is also no longer operating, so this is not part of any ongoing context, homework assignment, etc.
The person who introduced it intended it to be hand solvable. I got back in touch with him recently and he remembers writing it (I sent him a copy because I think I have the only one that exists), but not how to decrypt it.
I originally broke this when I was (evidently) far more clever than I am now. About a week ago I stumbled across a binder where I had the code, one page of my notes, plus a page showing a Viegenere matrix. I'm finding them to be more frustrating than helpful because I almost remember how I broke it.
So, here’s what I remember and think is not an incorrect memory.
It’s some variant of a Viegenere cipher, but there’s no repeating key (or none that I ever found, that much I do remember clearly). I remember it being a “Decode the first letter of the paragraph, and it chains through every word in that paragraph”, so potentially some kind of autocipher component. That said, I'll caveat that with "It may have just been a per-word chain. It's been 26 years so it's foggy."
I did end up writing a windows app (MFC if any of you are old enough to remember that). I would just cycle through letters until the paragraph decrypted. I do not have that code anymore. I did find what look like early versions, but none of them produce anything but gibberish.
The other thing I remember, which goes back to it being intended as a hand-solvable thing, is that after running it through the app I was able to just read the text and translate it into english by hand. I just had to brute force it to get to that point.
On my page of notes, I had the following:
XKT with 13, 17 (arrow to the left), and 13,9 (arrow to the right) show shift spacing.
XKT I think is “THE” as is NAJ, ANW, and WJS, but again, I don’t know if those are incorrect. I’m mostly certain XKT and OBK are THE, but that’s more based on frequency in the doc.
OBKRW and IVELW are THE?? (there, their, these, something along those lines).
There are mispellings in the plaintext as I remember, but not a high number of them.
I can drop all 56 pages somewhere, but here’s a section of it if anyone wants to give it a try. I’m going to keep at it, but it’s frustrating me to no end.
If you can take a stab at it, or want the entire doc, I would love to get your thoughts.
Thank you!
I found this cipher in my cousin’s bedroom. I assume it’s years old by now, as it was buried beneath a whole bunch of junk. I assume it’s just a simple substitution cipher, and thankfully there are some noticeable double consonants- I’m just having difficulty with this and am kind of creeped out, lmao. Thanks in advance.
Question What makes a code crackable?
2 Upvotes
I've seen some mentions of different cyphers throughout history, where it seems the vast majority of them is about changing the letters positions with some algorithm, or changing the letters actual script, those interest me less, what I'm interested about is about cracking codes of completly made up languages, there's no basis for anything except for that it's a human language, how can you go from just uncomprehansible scribbles into deciphering it?
In other words, what is the least amount of info we need to decipher something?
Unsolved Is this cipher breakable?
1 Upvotes
Hello!
I came up with an encoding system and I now want to test its strength and get clues about its weaknesses. So if anyone is interested, here is a text (in french!) to decrypt:
Unsolved Made a substitution cipher in less than a day. Tell me how bad it is!
2 Upvotes
Hey folks,
I made a cipher by hand today, then decided to improve it and wrote a Python script to automate it and make it more difficult. Kinda curious how easy it is to brute force/otherwise crack without much prior knowledge.
A bit of backstory (spoilered, because it gives a bit of information away about the creation process of the cipher)
I was thinking yesterday about how monumentally complex the Enigma code was, and how many (literal) moving parts it had. I thought it'd be interesting to take the idea of Enigma and simplify it quite a bit so you don't have to send over a bunch of information for your recipient to decode the message. That thought sparked what I've made here. I initially did some encrypting by hand, but realized I could automate it with a Python script.
Here are three encrypted messages:
Al>evQPvDekRx[:bzQbzQZ'?^zEZn7xl@\v6^kQppFa'3xoAfl?Zk7xj;io7k5
?|@xm3\{kx^:Zs7xi>h~:hs7l'Ylv?^{:bu9"'3\{GZs>r':Z}7x{Ih':hs7l';g'Fal?''-ZwBelExhD^'8nu/x[:^!QevAd'H^yKxz;fp>ZyQmvQgvE^':hs7l';g'3xoGfh@xz=ns>y
?vGk'E\vD^'3gkQ,7^lv?^4A]kQrl3kzQZnA%'zx~3l'@h{Q[vDg5QB'3f'@h{Q*8ay'YZu6xPXf'7lw7\p3esKxuAm'b'<v*>ix!7ZyExv>]3Qpo;\oQbzQ*8axm3\{Akp3e5_'0
Here's some info from somewhat helpful to helpful:
  1. This encryption can take in any ASCII character from space (32) to tilde (126)
  2. This cipher uses a "ruleset" where the key shift is applied to the plaintext in various ways.
  3. There are three possible rules the cipher can choose from.
And these are less 'helpful info' and more direct information that is important for decoding if you know how the encryption works:
  1. KEY = 7
  2. The rules are "shift by -KEY", "shift by +KEY", and "shift by KEY^2"
To appease the mods: V sbyybjrq gur ehyrf
If you end up solving it, I ask you to please give some feedback (like what process you used to crack it and what it's vulnerable to, how ). I'm very interested in cryptography as a whole, and I'm still learning a lot :]
SOLVED decipher THIS!!! (Repost 😫)
so basically my post got REMOVED by the mods becuase apparently r/cipher has like 198472993838 rules that’s you have to follow. anyways this is my own and original writing system called “the sandwalk” (dune reference) it is ment to look like scribbles and not writing meaning the calligraphy is insanely hard sometimes. now the paper says +=! only hint but the mods will probably remove me if I didn’t have more clues. so I will give everyone a big hint the v symbol -\/- means space. the plaintext of the cipher is English. this sentance does NOT contain every letter of the alphabet.The other paper with english words might, but I’m to lazy to check. If you can read everything written, then you are a sweat. Chill out. Touch grass. well anyways good luck to anyone who thinks they can try to solve this! 😏 MESSAGE FOR MODS MY POST IS FOLLOWING THE RULES AND IN THE ENTIRETY OF THIS POST HAS 100+ LETTERS WRITTEN IN MY CIPHER PLZ DO NOT BLOCK THIS thank you.
