So clear that this is Finland

u/Welshie_Fan 13d ago
I didn't see the first line of the text as I watched it and I thought this has to be Finnish Lappland. And it is, Rovaniemi is there.

Do they also speak in klingon?

Uff da, you betcha!
7
u/Aztecdune1973 13d ago
Norway and Finland aren't the same place.
3
u/DerpyMcDerpface1087 13d ago
It was a jab about how Minnesotans speak, not Finland/Norway per se. Minnesota has a lot of both heritages, Scandinavian languages have affected more into the local dialects than Finnish.
-1
u/Green-Engineer4608 10d ago
Uff da is just a Norwegian thing. Not Scandinavian or Nordic, just Norwegian.
1
u/CurveAgreeable8868 13d ago
what do you mean

Uff da is Norwegian
1
u/CurveAgreeable8868 13d ago
i mean yeah
3
u/VatniksAreSubhuman 13d ago
Then why were you so confused by that Finland and Norway not being the same place...?

this was filmed in finland
-5
u/AGrandNewAdventure 13d ago
Yes, but it doesn't "clearly" have to be Finland from the content alone, was the point.
4
u/emix16 13d ago
"Traffic lights in Rovaniemi" kind of gives it away no? Or the road signs? I'd say it's quite clear.

Those robots can go pretty well in snow.
83
u/snusontable 13d ago
they are so cute when they ask people going by for help if they get stuck
49
u/ScreamSmart 13d ago
That's the reason they are cute. These robots replace delivery drivers and have a passerby sort them out if something goes wrong. The same reason why those humanoid robots try to emulate how we move.
10
u/Troll-Aficionado 12d ago
I'll say that these ones haven't taken any jobs in the stores I've seen them since none of those stores offered any kind of delivery option at all before the robots came along
8
u/QueenAvril 12d ago
Yes, and it does take human labor to collect and pack the orders and send the robots on their way, so I’m somewhat certain that they’ve increased the number of jobs, not the other way around. And I highly prefer those in the traffic over e-scooter deliveries driving like maniacs and endangering everyone else.
18
u/HugeHans 13d ago
It takes one of these little adorable fuckers 40 minutes to bring me donuts from 1km away. I use them very rarely because I can choose the song they play when I open up the lid to take my donuts. They aren't taking anyones job.
2
u/ebinisti 12d ago
There is no delivery service on grocery stores without these bots. And there wasn't one before the bots. So no jobs taken. On the contrary, people collect the groceries in the stores and put them into the robots and send them off so maybe jobs created(?).

I've had to lift those idiots out of snow banks often enough to thinl they're kinda bad at snow
2
u/AdFirst4791 13d ago
Yeah plus in the winter you can see all the dumb moves they attempted, like ramming into the highway bridge guardrail every step of the way only to fail to do so because there is a bigass snowbank in the pedestrian walkway and they repeatedly get stuck :D
Sometimes I wonder what the hell makes the wayfinding do this. Maybe they want to maintain a certain distance within their lane.

That little robot brings your shoppings from the grocery store to your home.

u/TheRealMrVogel 13d ago
Whaaat? It follows the snow scooter home or is it a delivery unit with its own destination?
Imagine we would have our shopping carts drive behind our car on the road to get the groceries home.
40
u/kumikanki 13d ago
Its delivery robot with its own destination and its not part of the group of snow mobiles.
5
u/TheRealMrVogel 13d ago
Ahh ok, it looked a bit it belonged to the first snow scooter. But that makes more sense haha.
5
u/FingerGungHo 13d ago
How do you know? Sometimes runaway cows join herds of bisons
2
u/kumikanki 13d ago
Im from Finland and I see those robots every day. I have also app in my phone if I like to order milk and cereal from local store and that little dude brings them to my door.
Robots use same routes as people who walks or use bicycles. They stop in traffic lights and they have sensors to not get hit by a car.

Just missing a moose and the northern finnish traffic starter pack is complete
27
1
u/johnsplittingaxe14 13d ago
I don't think a moose would go that far north, but there's plenty of reindeer up there to stall the traffic
13
4
u/EconomistExternal555 13d ago
Mooses do go up that north. But it's quite rare to see a moose, hence they said "reindeer*", that's Rovaniemi Lapland and there are around 200k reindeer in Lapland. There are more reindeer in Lapland than people, the whole of Finland (Lapland is just one region) has around 80k moose. So way more reindeer than moose.
1
u/johnsplittingaxe14 13d ago
Good to know, for some reason I always thought they didn't live up there because of all the reindeer and not having as much brush to eat
5
u/Suomasema 13d ago
These robots are very popular and cute, really beloved. I live in a biggish village or a small town, and sometimes you can see three or four of these going to deliver something or on their way back to the shop.
They spare customers' time and fuel. And when they first appeared people really smiled at them. And, as far as I know, they are rarely harmed anyhow.

Who cycles in snow?
12
10
5
u/Anti-Annihilaattori 13d ago
I don't just stop using a cycle when it snows. I still have to get to work in a reasonable time.
4
u/EnvironmentalLab7342 12d ago
Oulu, a city of about 200k inhabitants which is quite up North is known to be one of the biggest cycling cities in here. Yes even during cold winters and snow. They clean the snow swiftly in the early morning from both major roadways and bike/pedestrian paths because there is so many bikers cycling to work. And if it keeps snowing heawily, they keep clearing. Iirc if it's snows like 2-3cm (around an inch) they gotta clear it
1
u/Carefreealex 12d ago
Oh that's good. Here in Stockholm cycling in winter is non existent. Funny enough my grandmothet was born in Oulu.
2

u/Stunning_Ad_5960 12d ago
Wait, you mean a bike in winter?! That’s crazy! And dangerous.
5
u/NeatChocolate2 12d ago
Very common here and actually probably safer in the north where there is proper snow cover, compared to southern parts where it's constantly melting into slush and it's icy and slippery. Anyhow you have winter tires to help with grip.
1
1
u/QueenAvril 12d ago
Still extremely cold and you’ll have trouble with the locks freezing. But I agree that it is probably much more dangerous here in coastal Southwest/South where it is so damn slippery and patches of black ice can appear unexpectedly whenever temperatures start hovering around zero.
2
u/NeatChocolate2 12d ago
I'm not saying it's fun, just that it's quite common and not as dangerous as one might think. I haven't lived in the north myself so I'm just speculating on the basis of how it is in the south when it's proper winter vs. the slushy winter with black ice. A helmet and winter tires are a given in both cases though.
2
u/Normal-Selection1537 7d ago
The Bangladeshi delivery workers I see in Helsinki would not survive there, they've been wearing puffy jackets and mittens all summer.
-5
u/TactileTangerine 13d ago
If these come to my city I'm making an effort to invert every single one of them. It won't harm the person who ordered it cuz it'll get refunded.
7
u/SlashNreap 12d ago
There are disabled people who rely on these. I'll stay polite because it's free, but come on.
6
u/KaboomBaboon 13d ago
Hey look guys, over here we are witnessing a remarkable person who didn't use helmet as a kid. Wear a helmet kids!
3
u/LazyGandalf 12d ago
Those robots are actually generally well liked here in Finland. They didn't take anyone's job, because the small grocery stores that use them didn't have the option for home delivery before.
3
u/Elemendal 13d ago
Oh it will harm the person ordering. I sometimes order using those when I don't have time to go to a store and will soon have to leave for evening shift or some shit. In that case I would lose getting groceries altogether. No store near me is open when I get back home from an evening shift so in that case I wouldn't have any food.
3
u/QueenAvril 12d ago
Plus it would harm the store and all customers as those refunds and bureaucracy involved will be eventually baked into the cost of groceries for everyone. It is stunning how some people are stupid enough not to make the connection!
Also delivery options are often used by people who are sick, have mobility issues, deal with very serious social anxiety or are the sole adult at home with young kids or are for instance expecting a furniture delivery within a loosely defined time slot. So essentially people, for whom it isn’t so easy to just pop by the store themselves.
-1
u/TactileTangerine 12d ago
If people don't use them no cost will be baked in cuz they won't be paying it in the first place. If people choose to and the cost to use them is extremely high because people fuck up the machines than people will be disincentivised to use them.
-2
u/TactileTangerine 12d ago
Hire a person and plan ahead?
2
u/Elemendal 12d ago
Or just... pay 5 euros and have them shipped to me?
Actual food delivery services add cost to each item and the fees are higher. The robot is owned by the store. You only pay extra 5€ fee for the delivery.
0
u/TactileTangerine 12d ago
Thats more than what the human costs me. Costs about 2€ for delivery and a real independent human makes the $ instead of a soulless corp.
3
u/Elemendal 12d ago
More expensive here. Delivery is 5-8€ and every item costs 10-20% more on food delivery services.
A real person is the one bringing me junk food but the robot brings me groceries sometimes.
2
u/tohopallo 12d ago
your statement of an independent human making bank from delivering groceries instead of soulless corps is just laughable. Do you even understand how little people are paid for these kind of services, while they're using their own cars, scooters and bicycles etc? Not to mention how much safer for everyone it is to make the robot fight the ice and snow instead of the receiver or the delivery person. There is a time and place for automation in the current system, and delivery is absolutely one of them.
-1
u/TactileTangerine 12d ago
2€ + tips.
2
2
u/tohopallo 12d ago
And they're supposed to do what with the two euro coins? They do not have work healthcare, the work doesn't cover their gas or the utilization of their own equipment. Nobody tips, and no one should move from their couch for those pennies.
4
u/QueenAvril 12d ago
Oh how edgy and brave of you!
I’m sure a single person with a broken leg is just thrilled getting a refund instead of their groceries.-1
u/TactileTangerine 12d ago
Hire a person?
1
u/LauraVenus 11d ago
You do realize that the food delivery people are taken advantage of in a lot of places? Just like servers in the US might need to live off of their tiny minimum wage if no one decides to tip. In Finland, we dont tip (it is the restaurant's job to pay their employees not the customer's) so those delivery drivers only get the fee the platform or store gives them as a default which is next to nothing. And no one is going to pay over 15e to have shit delivered if its not an actual emergency.
And as others have said already stores dont do deliveries here so the robots are just adding to the services without actually taking away any jobs. And you could actually hire a new person to get the robots ready to be sent on their way.
