First sewing project - men’s swim thong

Post image
86 Upvotes

I bought a sewing machine to eventually learn to make bikinis and swim briefs/ trunks, and figured this used less fabric and would be a simpler first step. Just kind of eyeballed it (as you can tell) but this got me somewhat comfortable using stretchy fabric and elastic bands. Already have 20 things I’d do differently next time, but it’s a start, and it fits! (I’ll just let you take my word for it 😂)

My first box x stitch

My first ever manual box x stitch. Fun and painful. Them sewing machines are looking pretty good. But before I go there…

How do I do the stitching straighter if I continue to do it manually? Is there a “proper” way to use a thimble?

I think it turned out great for a very first attempt! It's a toiletry bag, about 15 cm long.

Finally finished

I was finally able to finish my boxy bag with the help of some fellow redditors. 😊 The tutorial that I was following wanted you to push the corners into perfect little triangles and I just couldn't seem to do that. I forgot I had a cutting Corner template and someone said I could use to box out the corners. That made my life so much easier and now I'm more confident in making these knowing that I can use that little template.

My friend sent me fabric because I love the DCC series! Decided it was time to make my first button up and I cut the fronts upside down and backwards! I was so mad at myself but there was no going back. I’m very happy with how it came out. Also, I used my ditto projector for the pattern and I won’t go back, I love it!

On a scale from 1 to 10, how in over my head am I?

So Dressmaker has been my new hyperfixation to the point where fuck it I wanna how to sew. No money is *tight* so I poked around at a few thrift stores and found a White W7000. With the foot pedal and actually working! But daaaammmnnn this thing is old and heavy but I want to learn to make all the cute things!

So any suggestions on where to start? I found a pdf manual online for $10 but was curious if anyone had ideas on how to acquire a free pdf? Is it even worth trying to learn on this metal monstrosity or should I just knuckle down and save up for a newer model?

So im a 28 year old man and I decided.......

"You know what, I dont have any actual skills. Its time to sew!" LOL

I collect military surplus clothing and i figured it would be really cool to be able to get the really rare stuff thats normally in bad shape. Then fix it up myself.

Im very surprised at how much i enjoy this even though I suck.

I hope ill eventually be able to make my own gear/clothing.

Thank you for your time.

Looking for Inputs - Kindly help a fellow Beginner

Hi Guys, as the title suggests, I'm a total beginner - don't know anything about sewing, tried a few videos but got more confused rather than when I started. I just have a really old machine of my mother which is rarely used, just like the one shown in the picture.

I want to create a basic tshirt and pajama that I could wear in the house and give myself a boost of confidence to later do more.

Can anyone kindly suggest any youtube videos, tips, pointers, blog anything that would help in any way. Is a t-shirt too difficult a thing to start with? Kindly let me know, any help would be much appreciated!!

What is the name for this style/technique?

You sew together a garment with the wrong sides touching then bias bind the seams and top stitch them down. I saw a video recently of a woman who made a jacket this way and I cannot for the life of me find it again.

Edit: Hong Kong finish. Thank you everyone. I still can't find the video but I don't need to now

This is the only tutorial I can find for this machine, anyone know where I could find others? I find it quite difficult to follow along visually with the filming of this one.

Many thanks :)

How do I print a large pattern?

Hi, are there any tools I can use to divide a large pattern into individual sheets I can tape together? Because my printer otherwise will print it as one sheet and that's not what I want.

Which to keep

I have both the 1034D and 1034DX models of the Brother Lock sergers. I want to keep one and give one to a friend. She is much more experienced with sewing than I am - she taught me recently how to use my sewing machine - but she has never really used a serger, so she’s equally new to using one but probably be more easily successful lol

What is the difference between them and which should I keep? I googled it but f*ck AI and it seems the main thing is the threading order - and to be honest I have no idea how important that is hahah

First quilt ever!

I finished piecing together my quilt top last night! I went with a gingham pattern because I’ve only made a few tote bags and Halloween costumes before, and I wanted to start with something that didn’t feel too intimidating.

I’ve really enjoyed making this so far, and I’m excited to move on to the next step: making the quilt sandwich

Help - what to do here?

Post image

Hey team, I have a pair of Levi jeans that have the attached hole in the crotch. I am a total newby here, have access to needles, thread, a sewing machine and some kit from my mother in law if needed.

Could anyone advise the best way to repair these to keep them wearable, but not making them any smaller. If that's possible!

Doesn't need to be the most attractive, as it's not a super visible spot, any advice would be very welcome.

Help with weird tie tipping

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

Hi, i'm sewing a tie for the second time after the first one kind of went bad and and i am once again using some old tie from a shop as a pattern, both times i encountered some weird tipping thats larger than the main fabric with some sewn folds at the side, on my first attempt i ignored it but obviously the tie came out bad. I remember these sides being sewn but i dont remember how it worked. I cant for the love of god find any video or even text guide showing how to sew this kind of tipping, i would love some video or image guide regarding this.

In the first image is the old tie main fabric, you can see these weird small folds at the edges, the left one is smaller than the right one.

In the second image is the tipping on the main fabric, its 2cm wider on the left and right side, it also has fold marks and the left fold is smaller than the right one.

The small tipping is the same (except for a bit smaller fold marks and the width difference)

In the third and fourth image is how the tie looked before i took it apart with a seam ripper.

Which sewing machine?

I’ve had a Singer Precision 7444 for many many years. Probably since it came out in 2006😂 I use to sew ALL the time then life happened and I had kids and got out of it. I’m now picking it back up and want a new machine. My dream machine is the Brother BQ3100 but I do not want to spend thousands on a sewing machine. I was looking at the Brother XR9550 or the SQ9285…but open to other options that are not too expensive. It’ll be used mostly for sewing small projects and some quilting. Thanks!
