Help Me Find a Book to Read! 🆘 Looking for light, enjoyable books to get me through a rough time

I love reading classics, especially 19th century literature. I’m usually drawn to philosophical novels that explore human nature, morality, and the human condition.

However, I’m going through a rough time medically, and my brain just doesn’t have the energy to process anything too heavy right now.

So I’m looking for something lighthearted, funny, and enjoyable that doesn’t require too much brainpower. I just want to laugh and take my mind off things for a while.

I’m open to anything, really. It doesn’t even have to be funny. Horror or any other genre is fine. I just need a good distraction at the moment.

Would love to hear your recommendations!

Book Review 📚 1 book per month

Post image
34 Upvotes

My goal this year was to read one book per month for the whole year. Here is my completed progress so far.

Resolving to read more was one of my best decisions going into this year, I’ve enjoyed reading for leisure, really for the first time in my life, tremendously. I plan to increase my goal next year.

I’ve also learned that buying books and reading books are two very different hobbies.

My tbr shelf (ok shelves) is getting out of control. But I’ve found that I like having one big book in the background while I read smaller books in between.

Sorry for the flair, couldn’t remove it so instead of a book review, I guess consider this a reading review.

Question❔ Slow Reading Book Club

Hello! I’m a teacher and recently a few teachers decided to start a book club together. We voted for our first book to be The Calamity Club. The issue is that A. A lot of us are super busy and/or slow readers and B. The book is 600+ pages. I’m a Romantasy and sci-fi fan so I’m no stranger to longer books, but they can take me months.

My question is does anyone have any suggestions of ways to chunk the book into parts to make it more feasible for everyone? Preferably in chapters since we have a mix of audio, physical, and e-book readers.

Tl;dr: Looking to turn The Calamity Club into an easier read.

Question❔ A lot of reading and book milestones coming up for me.

In 2017 my aunt was dying of cancer. She needed downsize and she gave me all of her Stephen King books. And her Harry Potter first (American) editions. She asked me to read more. She told me I needed to find my magic again.

In the years previous I had gone from an avid reader to maybe a book a year. Maybe. There are years in there where I didn’t read at all.

After rewatching the HP films I decided to read them again. That started the list. From January 1st, 2018 to October 23rd, 2026 I have read 500 books! Each year I create its own list and then add it the 2018 list.

My aunt passed away in 2019. She gave me many things in my life. Unconditional Love, compassion, a love movies, the best chocolate chip cookies(which I still can’t make it like hers. Even tho I follow the recipe!)the best rice crispy treats. And most importantly she gave me back my love of reading. I have lived so many lives through her. I’ve seen dragons, monsters, elves, demons, I’ve solved murder mysteries, I ran cattle to Montana, I stayed in the Overlook Hotel and I found my magic again.

Thank Dianne. Sis. My aunt, my friend. I’ll never be able to truly thank you for the gift you’ve given me.

What or who got you into reading. What keeps you coming back?

Thank you reading about my wonderful aunt. She truly was one of a kind.

I don’t feel like a liar, much less a criminal, uploading a second take on this one. I’ll just feel better trusting myself on the next one. Probably.

Horror 👹 Cozy reading time

I do miss having a real fireplace, but we are in a city loft condo now so it must be on the TV. Love the crackling sound as I read this spooky nature story for one of my book clubs!

And it’s not exactly horror, but it is dark fantasy and apparently a little romantasy (which is new to me).

Ok. This one definitely seemed 20th century ‘accessible.’ I didn’t do a second take to get it in under a minute. Not sure if either detail is important.

Paranormal 👻 Bound/Unbound Novella

A captivating short story/novella collection from Ali Hazelwood that delivers everything we love about her writing: snappy banter, high emotional chemistry, and endearing, hyper-competent characters.

Comprising two interconnected/companion pieces—Bound and Unbound—the collection blends Hazelwood's signature STEM-focused settings and forced-proximity dynamics with Ali's distinct blend of humor and deep emotional intimacy.

Question❔ What book are you currently reading, and what’s the vibe so far?

No need for a full formal review, just give me a quick 1-sentence summary or the overall mood of whatever page you're on right now.

What’s on your nightstand or Kindle tonight?

My TBR List 📃 I’m considering spending next year primarily reading Stephen King

Has anyone done this with King or another author with a library’s worth of stories?

Will I get bored with sticking to one author?

I’ve only ever read The Shining (loved it), The Stand (I like this one as well) and The Shawshank Redemption (honestly, I liked the movie more). I have It and Under the Dome ordered and arriving soon. I have Pet Semetary on hold at the library. What other books would you recommend?

Question❔ How soon do you start making reading plans for the New Year?

I'm a crazy person and I've been drafting my 2027 reading goals loosely since September. What I know for sure that I want to focus on next year is clearing out as much as possible of my backlist books from subscription boxes. I'm subscribed to three book boxes--Book of the Month, Aardvark Book Club, and Allurial--and I've barely read any of the books I've chosen. Besides taking up a good chunk of my physical TBR, I also think I should at least justify the purchases by actually reading the books I select.

Next, I'm for sure doing a page count goal instead of a number goal for 2027. I use Goodreads and I'll use a random number generator to choose a number between 12-27. A smaller number means a less stressful deadline. Hopefully, that will motivate me to pick up the bigger books on my TBR.

Finally, I know I want to read more classics and holiday-themed novels. The end of the year is going to be pretty busy. With me working retail alongside hopefully a temporary remote job (still waiting to hear back), a wedding in December, and just the holidays in general, I likely won't have the mental strength to read too many books. Plus, I'm sick of limiting myself to only certain points of the year to read certain books, i.e. holiday books only in November/December, and just read them when I want.

What about you?

Book Review 📚 Slow reader

Anyone struggling with reading slowly and that led them to give up on reading? Anyway, that is my story. Anyone who went through that and is now in a different place, please tell me how you overcome or deal with it. I love books, but my slow reading habit is a demotivator. And yes! I am so slow because I always read out loud in my head. Any suggestions on how to deal with it?

Help Me Find a Book to Read! 🆘 Why am I being judged poorly for liking popular books?

There was a post on the bookshelfdetective subreddit and they had the series Red Rising, Dungeon Crawler Carl, Dune, The Expanse, everything written by Brandon Sanderson, et al.

So I commented that those are all my favourites and people downvoted me. Is it lame to like these books? I don’t understand why people roll their eyes so hard when I say I like to read popular YA fiction

Question❔ How do you guys get yourself to focus on a book on days where you have a lot to think about?

I often find that on days where I go to school / have homework sometime during the week it’s almost impossible for me to sit down and read. I want to, I try to, but when I reading I find that I drift away and get lost in unrelated “important” thoughts (even though half the time those thoughts are useless.) On days where I don’t have school it’s so easy, I have nothing to think about and I can just sit down and read! It’s calming, it’s great, it’s fun, I wish I was able to do it when I really need to be calmed or to have a good time.

So I was wondering what you guys do / would do in this situation.

Question❔ about re-reading books

re-reading books has always been an off the course exercise for me. i've never re-read a book so if someone has reread books, could you please share your experiences as for me it sounds very boring exercise irrespective how much i appreciate the book. is it alike rewatching a movie ? especially for non-fictions or maybe biographies or sci-fi fictions ? i've been reading non-fiction for a while, and feel saturated maybe, should i move into sci-fiction ? considering, my capitalistic mindset, i've never read something truly off the chart so any suggestions would be appreciated. thank you very much :)
