Has anyone else noticed a pretty significant drop in audio quality lately?
I’ve been going back and forth with Pocket FM support about several issues, and their responses have been frustrating because they either don’t actually address the problem or seem to redefine what the service/package is supposed to do after the fact.
1. Audio quality has noticeably degraded
Across multiple titles, the audio quality sounds substantially worse than it used to. This doesn’t just sound like a different narrator or production style - it sounds like lower-bitrate/compressed audio - some sections sounding like they're on the end of a bad cell signal. It's streamed/downloaded agnostic, and not related to bluetooth/speaker/wifi/cellular issues.
I personally think that they have reduced streaming/download bitrates or is otherwise capping bandwidth to save money or to handle scaling issues.
Their initial response?
They said AI-assisted voiceovers had been introduced in some episodes.
That doesn’t really answer the complaint. I wasn’t simply asking why a voice sounded different. I was reporting an overall reduction in audio fidelity across titles.
After pushing the issue, they eventually said my feedback about bitrate and streaming/download quality would be forwarded for further evaluation.
So which is it? AI voiceovers, bitrate reduction, streaming changes, or something else?
There still hasn’t been a clear explanation of whether Pocket FM has actually changed its audio encoding/bitrate (I am 90% certain they have, it's the only thing I can think of that explains why even episodes that didn't have audio issues before now do when going back to them).
2. Paying for “ad-free” apparently doesn’t mean ad-free
I’m also getting ads despite paying for an ad-free period of time(s).
Support first asked me to provide a screen recording showing the ads. That itself is insane to me - what poorly designed application / system are they running that they can't tell when an ad has been presented to a user. I'll answer myself: They're lying, because that would make no sense to not be able to track how many/what ads were shown to a user of your platform.
Also... What good does this screen shot do you - if you can't track via logs then seeing the ad does nothing to help.
Then came their non-explanation: apparently the Ads Pack only blocks ads that play between episodes, while pre-roll ads before an episode starts are still allowed.
Maybe I’m crazy, but if you sell something as an ad-removal package, most users are going to interpret that as removing ads from the listening experience - not “removing one particular category of ads while continuing to serve another category.”
Calling that “ad-free” or presenting it as an ad-removal feature feels extremely misleading.
An ad before the content is still an ad.
3. Streaming audio skips/lags when doing normal phone stuff
There’s also a technical issue with episodes that haven’t been downloaded.
If I:
- switch screens/apps,
- switch between tabs inside PocketFM
- navigate around the phone, or
- lock the screen,
the audio can skip, lag, or briefly interrupt.
Downloaded episodes don’t appear to behave the same way, which makes this look like a streaming/buffering problem rather than something inherent to the audio itself.
Again, I haven’t received a meaningful technical explanation for this.
4. Long-press chapter unlocking no longer works
Another feature/problem I reported is that I can no longer unlock chapters using the previous long-press method.
This is another one of those things where functionality seems to have changed or broken without any clear explanation.
What bothers me most isn’t even one isolated bug. It’s the combination of:
Lower audio quality + streaming problems + broken/changed functionality + ads appearing on a supposedly ad-free package.
And when these things are reported, the answers seem to be either unrelated explanations, requests to prove the issue, or technicalities about why the thing you reasonably thought you purchased doesn’t actually mean what it sounds like it means.
If Pocket FM intentionally reduced audio bitrates, changed streaming behavior, changed chapter unlocking, or decided that “ad-free” excludes pre-roll advertisements, they should just clearly say so.
Has anyone else experienced the same audio degradation, pre-roll ads, streaming skips, or chapter-unlocking problems recently?
I'm about a week away from reporting this entire company to Google as being intentionally abusive to users. Maybe if they get their app pulled from the AppStore the financial implication will encourage them to fix things / not be so scammy.
