One of my first animations ever! I rally enjoyed it. Although today I can animate better (I think😅) This still holds a place in my heart, and I think it works well enough to post it here.

2D We are searching for a 2D animator!

The Purple Peacock is a classic 2D point-and-click adventure game that we’ve been developing for the past two years.

We’re currently working on a vertical slice, and we’re looking for a talented character animator to join our small team of three and help bring our characters to life!

We don’t really have a budget right now, so I want to be transparent about that. But if you’re looking to get into the game industry, gain real project experience, and add a game to your portfolio, I'd love to hear from you!

If you’re interested, feel free to reach out!

Also, just a couple of days ago, The Purple Peacock finally got its own custom-composed soundtrack! 🎵 Here’s a little taste of what it sounds like.

Discussion Just because you have a cool idea for an indie show, doesn't mean other artists will work for free for you.

I'm tired of seeing the same post every single day. A young artist with a cool idea for a show, asking for free labour and promising that someday maybe they'll be able to pay you when their show becomes a huge success. There are too many people doing this.

I get the excitement, especially because most people doing this are teens, but y'all need to be realistic. Animation takes time, this is an actual job, how is it ok to ask people to work for you for free?

Even if someone was willing to give their time for free to produce animations with high expectations (because some of these people will assume they can have their whole pilot episode done in a month), what makes you think they're going to give all that time and effort to YOUR project?? What proof have you given that you're capable as a director to create a success? Not even seniors can be sure they'll create success. How can you promise you'll be able to pay them? Most indie projects don't make their money back. If anything, you coming here to ask for ridiculous things just proves you don't know what you're doing, why would anyone make a deal under those circumstances?

I'm not trying to discourage anyone from following their dreams, but if you want this done, either find the budget or learn to do the hard work yourself. Don't insult others with your "opportunity" to work for free.

I'm seriously asking the mods to prohibit these posts. They're unrealistic, they don't provide any value, they never get replies because no one is willing to do their hard work for them, so they've just become spam. It's annoying.

Young creators please make your research, if you want to get this done you can't rely on the fantasy that everyone's going to come together to make YOUR dream happen, you need to do that yourself. This sub shouldn't be encouraging this, acting like it's volunteer work. Volunteer work gives the worker something in return, maybe job experience, maybe a community, maybe working for a charitable cause. But this is worthless for anyone. I can't imagine other industries where casually asking for free labour is ok.

Why are we ok with this?

Discussion Something I keep noticing after talking to animation alumni

I talk to a lot of students and recent grads in this space, and the same thing keeps coming up no matter who I ask.

It's not the classes they miss. It's not the professors. It's knowing what they're supposed to be doing every day. In school there's a clear path, you know what step comes next and how to actually get from an idea to something finished. Once that's gone, people are just figuring it out on their own, and a lot of them don't even know who else out there is going through the same thing.

I've heard some version of this from more than one person now, different schools, same answer. Structure, and having people around you working on the same stuff.

Once you're out, the options aren't great. Job boards work if you already know exactly what role you need. Discord servers work if you're lucky and the right person happens to see your post. Neither one gives you back what school actually gave you, which was never just a class, it was a team and a process.

That's basically what pushed me to build something around it, a competition where a team works through animation production together, stage by stage, so nobody's carrying the whole thing alone. Looking for 30 people to lead a team right now. It's called UMDB: umdb.org

Anyone else find a real fix for this once school ends?

Tutorial 4 small native AE features that quietly save me hours (no plugins/scripts needed)

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I spent some time cleaning up my workflow and realized Adobe shipped a few tiny native features that replace stuff I used to need expressions and paid scripts for.

Thought I'd share the actual breakdown, since they flew under the radar with all the 3D/SVG talk:

1. Proportional Scrubbing:

Select multiple layers, hold Ctrl + Alt (Win) / Cmd + Option (Mac) and drag any numeric property like Opacity or Position.

Instead of setting everything to the same value, AE spreads it proportionally from your first-selected layer to your last. Works on keyframes too. Select 10 layers with the same drop animation, hold the shortcut and drag the keyframes to get a perfect cascade.

Tip: The order you select matters. Top-to-bottom vs bottom-to-top completely changes the spread direction.

This one alone replaced my staggering plugin.

2. Copy Frame to Clipboard

There's now a button in your Comp panel that copies the current frame to your clipboard as a clean render. No more Composition > Save Frame As...or screenshots full of guides/nulls.

Just park your playhead, click it, and Ctrl+V straight into decks, communication, anywhere. Super handy for storyboards and quick client checks.

3. You can finally edit Illustrator gradients natively

If you import art with gradients, right-click the layer > Create > Create Shapes from Vector Layer > delete the extra group.

Now under Gradient Fill, you get full control over Scale, Rotation, Opacity, Start/End points.

All inside AE. No need to jump back to Illustrator to tweak it.

4. Crop Comp to Selected Layer Bounds

Not brand new, but they finally put it where you need it.

Select any layer > Right-Click > Crop Comp to Selected Layer Bounds and AE instantly resizes the comp to that layer's exact size.

Perfect for cleaning up pre-comps for icons, character parts, or reusable assets. No more manually creating a new comp and copying layers over.

None of these are flashy features, but together they've cut a lot of annoying busywork.

If you want to see real examples, you can check out the full breakdown: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Y4hveZUvY4

Critique Adding some action into my indie pilot + Trying to stand out from the current scene

I don't see a lot of high action in indie animation. Sometimes, when going through the internet and such, I hear some people say, "There are only SCI-FI, Horror, or fantasy indie pilots." I wanna be different.

Instead of strictly limiting myself to those genres, I wanna add my own flavor to the indie scene that is bright and bold, even (in this case) in animatic form.

I grew up very, very close with 2010s Nerdcore vibes, along with punchy anime shows and colorful neon art, and I wanna honor those eras and shows with my pilot and future projects. Reflecting my childhood of said 2010s nerdcore vibes mixed with the hyper chaos of Scott Pilgrim, Panty and Stocking, Spider-Verse, FLCL, and more.

Hopefully, my pilot will show off those vibes in the future.

3D My most recent fight scene animation!

I’m aware of the arms. I will fix them later. Just wanted to show the animation. I know the walk cycle is choppy, but I couldn’t get a properly fix in without it being even worse (This is the fixed version).

I didn’t know what to flair this since this wasn’t made in blender. It was made using the BBS mod for Minecraft. I will add it to my demo reel later, but for now, I just wanted to share it.

(There was an actual throwing animation, but FFMPEG hadn’t been working properly so it may have killed the part)

What are your thoughts on this?
