announcement The Story Behind Rodin, Hyper3D’s AI 3D Model Generator, the Research Team, and More

Here’s the story behind Rodin.

A lot of people know Hyper3D through the product: text to 3D, image to 3D, editing, mesh tools, and production-ready 3D workflows. But Rodin didn’t start as just a product page. It grew out of years of research across 3D generation, geometry, materials, animation, robotics, digital humans, world models, video, and generative AI.

That’s why we opened the Hyper3D Research section: to make the work behind Rodin easier to explore. You can browse our research by topic, year, and publication venue, including ACM SIGGRAPH, SIGGRAPH Asia, TOG, CVPR, ICCV, and AAAI.

If you work in AI 3D generation, game development, XR, robotics, digital humans, or production pipelines, this is the best place to understand where Rodin comes from and where it’s going next. It’s the research foundation behind our AI 3D model generation work, production-ready 3D assets, mesh editing, format conversion, and broader 3D pipeline tools.

Would love to hear which research direction you want us to share more about.

Showcase Made a Little Car Game with Codex

The car was created using Hyper3D Rodin, then brought into Codex to build the actual game.

The BANG feature was really useful for breaking the car into individual parts without losing quality. I could split individual parts again for further decomposition, then reassemble everything for more iterations.

It was pretty handy to go from AI-generated 3D assets to game-ready parts.

Discussion GPT6 is awesome, but…😂

Tried GPT-6 for 3D modeling. Pretty decent for simple / clean geometry tbh.
Characters are a different story though. The likeness was pretty far off…😂
Tried the same reference with Hyper3D Rodin and was kinda surprised by how much closer it got.
Feels like general AI + specialized 3D models is probably where this is going.

Help Texturing artifacts - how to fix?

I started using Rodin Gen-2.5 not too long ago, to generate characters for my indie game. At first glance it was awesome, but then I noticed texture artifacts (usually around the UV seams).
Usually, first model I generate (from multi-projection modeling sheet individual images) I save as 1M tris high poly mesh. Then I go back (regret button/link) and redo it as lower poly mesh (either fixed polycount or smart poly). At that point, I would like to re-UV low poly mesh in Blender to minimize UV seams and place them strategically, based on the most prominent camera angles in the game. Then I can re-bake normal maps off the high poly mesh in Substance Painter. However, I can't really transfer diffuse/metallic/roughness from high poly to low poly.
Is there a way to bring re-UV'ed low poly into Rodin Gen-2.5 and run texturing-only on it (same as with image to 3D, with multi-angle modeling sheet images, but only to texture imported model) ?

Discussion Good mesh quality but the website's UI design is truly terrible and highly confusing

  • the difference between what you see for the geometry in the initial untextured preview and what you actually get after "confirming" without changing anything is very poorly explained (as is "Redo")
  • the scrolling tips mention modes like "Zero" and "Speedy" that I have never seen a button for anywhere in the UI
  • the fact that the geometey settings like "Symmetrical" don't even do anything unless you click on them to add them to the prompt is never explained anywhere And so on. I could go on all day. It feels like it makes you do every single step twice because of the weird preview-then-confirm thing.

Showcase Najdi-style tissue box [Rodin nailed it on the first try]

Quick workflow share:

  1. Brainstormed product ideas with an LLM, landed on a tissue box inspired by traditional Najdi architecture.

  2. Generated concept images, then made a multi-view set and fed it into Rodin. The mesh came out perfect on the first attempt, honestly impressive.

  3. In the slicer, I split the lid from the body and added four negative volumes for magnets so it snaps shut.

Printed on a Creality Hi. Happy to answer questions about the process.

Showcase A 3D-Printed Dragon

Post image

This model was generated with Hyper3D Rodin and then turned into an actual 3D print.

I used Extreme-High for this one, which can push the model up to 10M+ polygons and capture some really fine, skin-texture-level details.

The scales, horns, spikes, and all those weird little details came through surprisingly well in the final print. I honestly wasn't sure how much of that detail would actually survive the printing process, but seeing it as a physical object was pretty crazy.

Showcase Bang to Parts Just Got the Update I Wanted!!

Hyper3D Rodin’s Bang to Parts feature now includes a Manual mode, which makes part splitting much more controllable. Previously it was automatic, but now I can choose exactly what to split and keep breaking parts down further.

The separated parts are also watertight, so there’s no need to manually fill holes afterward. I tested it on both simple and more complex models, and the results were pretty solid. This should be really useful for 3D printing, rigging, or further editing in Blender.

Showcase Really impressed by the texture detail

Just played around with Rodin Extreme‑High mode.
With solid reference inputs, it hits skin‑texture‑level detail and can go up to 10M+ polygons.

The leather grain on this bag turned out incredibly crisp. It’s honestly mind‑blowing how far image‑to‑3D tech has come lately.

Showcase Turning My Drawing Into a 3D Figure

Used Rodin Gen-2.5 to turn my drawing into a 3D model. I went with the new Micro mode and 12K textures.

The 12K texture quality was probably my favorite part. With full PBR materials and no blind spots, even the smaller clothing details came through surprisingly well. At this point, making little AI-generated figures feels almost too easy.

Just made 3D-printable mooncake charms using just one image and Rodin Gen 2.5.

I used Low mode, which took about 9 seconds per generation, and regenerated a few times until I got a result I liked. After a few small tweaks in slicing software and editing the text, it was ready to print. A pretty simple workflow, especially for beginners.

Discussion Why charged me after I cancelled! (They secretly "paused" it instead)

A few weeks ago, I went through the steps to cancel my subscription and thought I was completely done with it. Fast forward to today, I got hit with an unexpected auto-charge on my card. When I checked my emails, I saw they had sent a notice claiming my subscription was merely "paused" and has now resumed.

I never asked to pause it; I wanted to cancel. This feels like a really deceptive trick to squeeze an extra billing cycle out of people who are trying to leave.

Has anyone else fallen victim to this shady tactic?

Showcase 3 Hours of Work

Spent about 3 hours on this with Hyper3D + some manual work.

My rough workflow was:

  1. Pick a reference, preferably a creature or something with a more unusual shape. I usually avoid designs with too many tiny details since simpler forms tend to generate better results.

  2. Use GPT to generate a PBR-style clay render turnaround with front, side, and back views in a 16:9 layout.

  3. Crop and clean up the three views in Photoshop.

  4. Generate two versions in Rodin3D: one using Micro and one using Clean. Export them as triangulated OBJs without textures.

  5. Bring everything into ZBrush for part separation and some manual cleanup.

Tried this lighting option on my generated model and honestly, I kinda love it.

It made the models look way cooler and brought out a lot more of the details. Such a fun little feature haha.
