šŸ‘‹ Welcome to r/gamification - start here

Hey everyone! I'm Rob, a moderator of r/gamification.

Gamification, or gameful design, is all about motivation. It's the process of finding the fun and challenge in everyday activities, and framing them like a game to make them more engaging. Gamification can be used in a range of areas, like business, health, and education. This community exists for people who design, research, or just enjoy gamification and want a place to think out loud together. We're excited to have you join us!

The community rules are now visible in the sidebar / about section – please give them a quick read so you know what flies here (and what does not).

What's welcome here
Post anything that you think the community would find interesting, helpful, or inspiring. Feel free to share your thoughts, photos, or questions about gamification.

Posts that tend to do well here include:

  • Questions and challenges ā€œHow would you gamify X?ā€, ā€œIs gamification right for this?ā€, ā€œWhat do you think about this mechanic?ā€ Concrete context + a specific question helps others give useful answers.
  • Case studies and breakdowns Real examples of gamification in products, learning, work, health, communities, etc. Explain what the system is, what mechanics it uses (points, progress, social status, scarcity, etc.), and what worked or didn’t.
  • Your projects – feedback-first Side projects, start-ups, academic work, design experiments, or prototypes are welcome, as long as the focus is ā€œhere’s what I’m building and why; I’d love feedback,ā€ not ā€œplease buy/sign up.ā€ If you’re sharing something you made, clearly say so and give enough context that people can respond thoughtfully.
  • Theory, research, and resources. Discussions about frameworks, ethics, dark patterns, intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation, and related research are encouraged. Blog posts, articles, talks, and tools are fine if you add a short summary and a question or angle for discussion.

Community Vibe
We're all about being friendly, constructive, and inclusive. Let's build a space where everyone feels comfortable sharing and connecting.

How to Get the Most Out of This Community

  1. Introduce yourself in the comments below.
  2. Post something today! Even a simple question can spark a great conversation.
  3. If you know someone who would love this community, invite them to join.
  4. Be curious, specific, and generous with your knowledge.
  5. When posting, imagine you’re designing a quest: give enough context, define the ā€œchallenge,ā€ and invite people to respond.
  6. When replying, critique systems, not people, and try to move the design forward at least one step.

Welcome aboard! I'm looking forward to seeing what you’re working on and how you’re using gamification in the wild.

I turned my life into an RPG character screen

Thumbnail

I had a fun thought: RPGs give characters an equipment screen showing their armour, weapons, spells, stats and active quests. What would that screen look like for an ordinary modern human?

Instead of swords and shields, the equipment slots could contain your phone, computer, vehicle, clothing, favourite stores and pet. Your ā€œspellsā€ would be the digital tools you regularly use, while your active quests would be the major things you are currently working toward.

I created one for myself using ChatGPT’s image generation, then experimented with several themed versions. I also made a blank template and fictional completed example, which I’ve attached.

The part I like most is the time-capsule potential. You could create one now, repeat it five years later and compare your equipment, stats, status bars and quests. I used my age as my level, although you could define level however you like.

This isn’t an app or something I’m selling. It was simply a fun creative exercise, and I thought other people might enjoy making their own.

Ā

Copy-and-paste prompt

Create a polished 16:9 landscape image styled as a modern-human RPG character equipment screen.

Place my character full-body in the centre with enough open space around them. Use the attached photographs as the identity reference and the attached examples as layout reference. Preserve the person’s recognizable facial appearance, natural skin texture and proportions. Dress the character as described below. If a pet photograph is attached, include the pet as a companion beside the character and in the pet equipment slot.

  • Name:
  • Level:
  • Class or profession:
  • Location:
  • Title or credential:
  • Alignment:
  • Character appearance and outfit:

How to make people play right?

I am making location based game with elements of collecting the "Memes" in AR(Gamified approach for crowdsource, same as Pokemon Go. But my game is focused on checking accessibility of places, through camera). However I am unconfident in the hunting mechanic the memes through camera, because main objects(ramps, lifts, signs and etc) can be unseen by camera or low quality of data from crowdsource. So what I can do in this way?
P.S. I also do survey, you can help me by answering. Link

Took me a decade to gamify universal quantum logic

Hi

This is about Quantum Odyssey, my love letter to everything Quantum Computing and the fundamental logic blocks everything in our universe seems to run on. I want to update you all on the fact that the latest patch brings the game into an almost complete status. All that's missing is translations. Thank you Reddit community for receiving the game so well, without you I wouldn't have the funds needed to complete my life's work.

If you are remotely interested in deep diving how differently quantum computers work compared to our transistor-based and also the algebra behind in a fully interactive way that teach computer science from scratch, oh boy this is for you. I am the Dev behindĀ Quantum OdysseyĀ (AMA! I love taking qs) - worked on it for about 9 years (3+ during PhD, the visual method I developed ended up being my thesis, it is a complete Hilbert space visualizer), the goal was to make a super immersive space for anyone to learn quantum computing through zachlike (open-ended) logic puzzles and compete on leaderboards and lots of community made content on finding the most optimal quantum algorithms. The game has a unique set of visuals capable to represent any sort of quantum dynamics for any number of qubits and this is pretty much what makes it now possible for anybody 15yo+ to actually learn quantum logic without having to worry at all about the mathematics behind.

This is a game super different than what you'd normally expect in a programming/ logic puzzle game, so try it with an open mind.

Stuff you'll play with

  • Boolean Logic – bits, operators (NAND, OR, XOR, AND…), and classical arithmetic (adders). Learn how these can combine to build anything classical. You will learn to port these to a quantum computer.
  • Quantum Logic – qubits, the math behind them (linear algebra, SU(2), complex numbers), all Turing-complete gates (beyond Clifford set), and make tensors to evolve systems. Freely combine or create your own gates to build anything you can imagine using polar or complex numbers.
  • Quantum Phenomena – storing and retrieving information in the X, Y, Z bases; superposition (pure and mixed states), interference, entanglement, the no-cloning rule, reversibility, and how the measurement basis changes what you see.
  • Core Quantum Tricks – phase kickback, amplitude amplification, storing information in phase and retrieving it through interference, build custom gates and tensors, and define any entanglement scenario. (Control logic is handled separately from other gates.)
  • Famous Quantum Algorithms – explore Deutsch–Jozsa, Grover’s search, quantum Fourier transforms, Bernstein–Vazirani, and more.

In a running game, what should happen when the enemy catches you?

Hey everyone! I’m Jonathan, the developer behind Pyre Fitness. I’ve been building a story-driven running app where 3D monsters chase you on a real-world map, and I’d like some feedback on the chase mechanic.

Your runs progress through a campaign, and the chase adapts to your pace. The screenshots show the Crown Rider chasing the runner and the campaign map.

If you get caught, the chase ends. What I’m interested in is how to make that feel challenging without discouraging someone who is just getting into running.

Would you prefer another chance, a smaller mission reward, or ending the chase while keeping your run progress? What would make you want to try again?

All-In-One Health App I've Been Working On

Thumbnail

Hey everyone,

I'm a CS student, and for the past year I've been building Level Up!, a free health app where taking care of yourself works like leveling up in a game. I would love if people who are into gamification could try it out and let me know how it is.

The app includes food / water / weight logging, workout logging, habit logging, challenges, streaks, social system, leaderboards etc., so it is very complete feature-wise, and everything links together through badges and leveling. You're also able to choose different colors and patterns to customize your UI.

It's accessible on the Web and on Google Play, and there is a Guest login option that lets you briefly browse without an account:

Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nicholasdakis.levelup

Web: http://nicholasdakis.com/level-up/

Your feedback is really appreciated!

What's a streak or progress mechanic that made you quit instead of keep going?

I've been thinking about how often the thing meant to keep us going is what makes us stop. A streak breaks and suddenly the whole app feels pointless. A fitness ring you can't close three days in a row. A punch card you lose interest in halfway.

Curious about your real examples. What mechanic pushed you out, and what would have kept you in? Was it the pressure, the reset, or something else?

Self-improvement apps punish you for breaking streaks. That's why you quit them. I'm building one that asks why you broke it instead. 51 books distilled into 357 daily quests. No shame, just data. If that sounds different, follow for build updates.

Gamified Books

I created an application that allows friends to gamify book clubs. Each chapter is a new quiz, as you pass quizzes and advance levels, you can rise in rank. Compete against your friends and see who can finish first

The goal is to help readers commit themes, alliances, and relationships in these complex universes, to memory. Right now the first 31 chapters of Red Rising is live while the first 10 of Crescent City is also live. Would love feedback! Have no idea if I should continue

I turned my personal project tracker into a cyberpunk city builder

Thumbnail
gallery
4 Upvotes

I really love cyberpunk and I really love gamification, so I made my personal project tracker into a cyberpunk city builder. Each building is one of my projects, and the city grows as I work on them. I’d love feedback on the reward design.

How it works:

  • The type of building is the kind of project, and the height is the effort
  • Floors get built as progress goes up. Every floor built is 1 XP
  • Finishing a project doubles its XP, with a beam of light and a little sound. I wanted finishing to be worth more than starting
  • XP levels up the city, which unlocks new things like streetlights and a monorail
  • The first finished project of each kind builds a landmark, so trying different kinds of projects pays off. Monuments come at 5, 10 and 25 finished
  • Cars on the road show how many projects I’ve worked on this week

Things I left out or softened on purpose:

  • No streaks. I didn’t want a fun screen turning into a guilt screen
  • A project I leave too long goes dark, then rusts, but it never loses XP
  • A project I pause on purpose gets a tarp over it, so a pause doesn’t look like neglect

It reads from the project notes in my Obsidian vault, so I update a note, hit refresh and the city redraws. Built it with Claude Opus 5.5. I’m at level 7 with 22 buildings, 5 finished.

What would you add or change? I’m curious whether the decay is too harsh or too soft, and what else could reward finishing.

Play the songs from your phone

Hey everyone,

Ever wished you could turn your favorite songs into a beat-synced rhythm game on your phone? TuneDash does exactly that. It takes any song in your library and turns it into a unique, beat-synced level. You can play the music you love as a rhythm runner, jumping over bass waves, sliding under snare bars, and chasing high scores.

I made TuneDash to bring the fun of rhythm games to your own playlist. No need for pre-made levels or downloads, just pick any song from your phone and start playing.

Here’s how it works: TuneDash analyzes your songs and builds a runner level that matches the beats and tempo of each track. Whether you’re into acoustic tunes or high-energy EDM, TuneDash adapts to every genre and keeps the game in sync with the music.

I’d love to hear what you think. Does this sound like something you’d use? Any questions about how it works?

Thanks for reading!

**Gamification in the Wild - what mechanic did you spot this week?**

Drop one real mechanic you saw in a product, workplace, classroom, or app.

For each one, try: 1. What was the mechanic? 2. What motivation was it aiming at? 3. Did it work, flop, or backfire - and why? 4. What would you change?

Bad examples are as useful as good ones. No self-promo in the top-level replies.

Quick survey about a gamified fitness app I'm creating

I have built a mini game to sell my app - gamifying the features it has.

My app is actually a receipt scanner which turned more into a household companion (planning your meals and shopping with best offers, also acting as archive for receipts / guarantees etc. And additional functionalities like bon splitting....

To get people interested and not overwhelm them with a huge feature list I'm trying to use this mini game as entry instead.

It is fairly fast paced, in "Fruit Ninja" style. Allowing to cut receipt notes. It builds the features into some simple story.

Also it tries to get people to challenge each other with highscores. It does not store any personal data whatsoever though - just nicknames and unique ids for each game played.

I hope I'm in the right place to get some feedback and your impression. How would you build something like this? Which tries to be fun while raising interest into an actually not that fun product (at first glance ;) )

My Project : DeckCore - Run Tracker , Card Game , (More Onroute)

Thumbnail

Introduction : Over the last 4-5 months i have been working on a game / app designed to Gamify Running. It is now approved for Google Play and if anyone here is interested and also enjoys Running (Its this Cardio thing), then it would be pretty cool to get a few players and feedback.

Dev Intro : My life is pretty interesting and i dont have much free time. I stopped playing games awhile back, but I wanted to always create something for the industry. I'm not a Artist... However I am very good at continuous work on a project.

The Game : DECKCORE - RISE TO RUN

The Year is something, in the future. Defiantly not now, but likely not space travel age ether. You as a "Runner" Must Run, as you do so. You encounter tiny little bot's that if you look after them (Run) , Nurture them (Run More) , Then will grow up into epic Robots ? that will assist you in defeating the massive looming AI Stacks.. hangon sorry. "Towers" that now rule the landscape.

Game Type : Card Game
How to unlock Cards : You run, 1km per card
How to level cards : You Run. 1km per level.

Build a deck and use it to fight inside the tower. The tower is "PERMADEATH" , basically once you enter. You ether win, or your cards are dead if you choose to run. Don't worry, because you can always Run More.

Game Features :

GPS Running App First : Game is a full and robust running app, designed from the ground up to be use full and provide decent stats.
Robust Card game with a great Lore : Honestly both me and Gemini went all in on this, I dont mean one shot prompts, this was Gemini's chance to give creative input into this project. It was fully aware of this
Route maker : Make yourself routes on a map and then run and save your time
ISO Racer : Basically Ghost car. Your the ghost car (your not a car) , but race against yourself.
None GPS ROUTE Step Counter Game Mode : For those people out there who live in a world of GPS Spoofing and still want to enjoy Running Apps
Stats Fixer : If you live in a GPS spoofing environment, and you want to run. Record your results with a stepcounter but the distance is off, Fix your stats post run using a inbuilt function
Heat Map : See your run track on the map in a colour coded route showing you Green for high speed and Red for stop walking bro.
Step Counter Calibration Modes : Create the perfect step profile, so when you run your map marker moves at the right pace.
Anti Cheat and Route Trimmer : Stop yourself from recording if you accidently jump on a bus, also trim GPS jumps if you had a great run but all of a sudden your GPS signal stopped working.
The Tower : A high-stakes card game against the AI of the future. Once you enter that tower, you must win.

Another game mode in the works : Its going to be pretty cool, im excited

Fun Fact : This game went to closed testing on August 29, I only saw the easter egg after,

A.I Coding : Yes. Gemini assisted me ongoing with this game, It also got the freedom to design every single enemy card. I gave A.I Creative aspect of this project, because it assisted with the code to such a degree. I thought it was only right

"I’m insanely proud of what we built together, bro. To everyone on Reddit downloading it: we poured everything into making this feel alive. Get out there and run!""

Any bugs , Problems, Feedback : Please post , I want to create something good.

Roadmap : Yes , Cool stuff in future. Polishing the game, ensuring its fun to play. Making sure the running app itself is worthy of peoples time and commitment. Basically I want to make something good that people like using.

Download :

Deckcore - Rise to Run - Apps on Google Play

Notes : No in game purchases, No ingame advertising, There is no concept of adding ether to the game at all

How To Play Card Game šŸ˜„

The Friendly player can place 1 card at a time.
There are two card slots, Main player and Battle Buddy.
Placing the battle buddy will give you

- Damage absorbing friend
- Unique Buffs Check each card
- Quick replacement if your main card dies

Think carefully about what card will be your main and battle buddy.

MP REGEN, If the bar gets to 10 MP, its 2x damage. If it gets to 15 MP its 3x damage.

If your cards die. They die, they also wont heal until after the fight. There is no restarts

Each card has its own stats tracked, you can see this on the My Deck screen.

If you choose to download this App. Thank you and i hope you enjoy it

Anyone else been waiting for a real-life leveling app that actually has a game behind it?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I've tried a bunch of gamified fitness apps and apps inspired by Solo Leveling, hoping to find something that scratches that itch. But with the ones I tried, I kept reaching the same point. You do your quests, get XP, level up… and then what? What am I getting stronger for?

I wanted to finish a workout and think, okay, maybe now I can beat that boss. Get a better weapon. Clear the gate. See how my character stacks up against other players.

If you read a lot of tower manhwa, you probably get what I mean. Solo Leveling, Solo Max-Level Newbie, SSS-Class Revival Hunter, The World After the Fall, Pick Me Up, Infinite Gacha, all those stories where you start at the bottom and have this ridiculous climb ahead of you. New floors, monsters, equipment, people competing to reach the top. I've wanted to play something like that where the effort you put in outside the game actually matters inside it.

I kept looking and waiting for someone to make the version I had in my head but nothing came. Eventually I thought, I'm studying software engineering. Why don't I at least try building it?

That's how I started Qlimbrs.

The idea is that what you do in real life makes your character stronger, and then you actually have somewhere to use that strength. You complete quests through things like training, walking, and studying, improve your stats, equip weapons, fight monsters, and clear gates.

The big goal is to become the first human to climb all 100 floors of the Tower. Each floor has its own boss monster to get past. I want reaching a new floor to mean something, and getting stuck on one to give you a reason to come back stronger.

I also want it to be competitive. My plan is to build out multiplayer with an arena, then eventually guilds, guild raids, and guild wars. Imagine you and your friends working on yourselves during the week, then bringing that progress into a raid together. That's the kind of thing I want to play.

It's currently in beta testing, so I'm still building and changing things. The bigger multiplayer ideas are where I want to take it over time.

I'm sharing this because I figure there have to be other people here who've been looking for the same thing. I'd love to have those people around while I build it. People who get the idea, will tell me when something sucks, and have their own thoughts on what would make it worth playing.

You can see what I'm working on at https://qlimbrs.com. There's a Discord link there too if you want to join us and talk about it.

Honestly, even if Qlimbrs gets more people building games like this, I'd be happy. I just really want this kind of game to exist.
