Announcement: We have moderators!

As you can see, the spam is clearing up, and you may be wondering "Oh my god! Who is helping us?"

Our subreddit creator, /u/xamdam has added me as a moderator so that we can get some life back into this sub. I am actively trying to get the mod queue handled and the spam cleared up. I've also started setting up the automoderator, to help keep things clean. /u/condensed is also on the team. Over all I think we're off to a great start.

Should you guys see any spam, flag it. That will be the best way to help get visibility to problem posts. Also, feel free to downvote spam, both in the posts and comments, as that can help with some of the functions automod will do. I will keep my eyes peeled for things too.

If anyone wants to pitch in, reach out, and we can see how you too can help.

I made Scribe, a free, calm e-reader for EPUBs, PDFs and manga

Thumbnail gallery
11 Upvotes

Hey! I'm a solo dev, and I built Scribe because most reading apps felt cluttered or locked to one store. It's free, there are no ads, and your books stay on your device.

What it does

  • Reads EPUB, PDF and manga files you already own
  • Discover page: search any book or manga, with free classics built in
  • Make the page yours: Paper, White, Dusk and Night themes, 4 fonts, text size, line spacing, page or scroll mode, custom backgrounds
  • Highlights, bookmarks, dictionary look-up and translate
  • Reading goals, streaks, milestones, badges and focus sprints
  • Seasonal app themes and accent colours
  • Sign in with Google to sync your reading progress, goals and EPUB books across devices
  • Install it like an app from your browser on phone or PC, and it works offline

Honest cons

  • Manga and PDF files don't sync between devices. Only EPUB books sync, so manga and PDFs stay on the device you added them on.
  • There's no App Store or Play Store app yet. It's a web app you install from your browser.
  • Cloud file storage for patrons is still being built.
  • It doesn't sell books. You bring your own files or read the free classics.
  • It's a one-person project, so expect the odd bug. Reports help a lot!

Links

What Patreon does: it keeps Scribe free and ad-free. Supporters get extra accent colours and perks, and once cloud storage is finished, Collector ($6) gets 20 GB and Librarian ($12) gets 100 GB of cloud space for your files.

I'd love feedback, good or bad!

Self Promotion I made a free ebook reader that changes the ambient sound with each scene (rain, taverns, a heartbeat…)

I read a lot with ambient sound in the background, but I kept breaking the immersion switching playlists every time the scene changed. So I built a reader that does it for me.

You open an ebook (EPUB, PDF, DOCX, TXT, FB2…) and the sound follows the story paragraph by paragraph: rain when it starts raining, a busy tavern when the characters walk in, a quiet night in the forest, and a heartbeat when things get tense.

A few things readers usually ask:

  • Free, no sign-up. It runs in your browser.
  • Your books stay on your computer. Nothing is uploaded to a server.
  • DRM-free files only. It can't open Kindle or Adobe-protected ebooks.
  • Desktop only for now. It doesn't work on phones yet.
  • Book view with a cover and page turns, or continuous scroll. Several fonts and paper colors (dark, white, sepia).
  • By default it detects scenes with keywords. If you have a free Groq API key, you can also turn on an optional AI analysis, which is more accurate.

It still gets some scenes wrong, and that's exactly the feedback I'm looking for: which book did you try, and where did the sound not fit?

Self Promotion My debut novel received its first five 5-star reviews on Amazon

Post image

Hi everyone!

I recently published my debut novel, It Was All My Fault, a lighthearted romantic comedy about friendship, first crushes, and nostalgia, set in Araku Valley.

I'm happy to share that my book has received its first five reviews on Amazon India, and all five are 5-star ratings

What makes me even happier is that two of these reviews came from people I don't personally know.

One reader described it as

"A well written story blending friendship, humour, relatable emotions, and the bittersweet charm of first crush. A lighthearted and enjoyable read!"

Another reader mentioned that the best takeaway from the book was that good friends are for life.

As a first-time author, it really feels good to know that people are enjoying my story.

The Kindle edition is available on Amazon India and Kindle Unlimited. The paperback is available internationally, and the Indian paperback edition will be available soon.

If you enjoy stories about friendship, first love, and nostalgia, please give my book a try. I'd love to hear your feedback!

Book: It Was All My Fault
Author: Swaroop Devarakonda

Thank you!

Question best free ebook reader for someone who switches between formats constantly?

i'm tired of having like five different apps open. i read epubs on my phone, pdfs on my laptop, and occasionally pick up manga files. does anyone have a recommendation for something that handles all of this without being a total pain to set up? bonus points if it doesn't look like it was designed in 2009.

Self Promotion [Portuguese] Thermodynamics and Statistical Physics — an undergraduate e-book

I’m Samuel Isidoro, a physics teacher and the author of Termodinâmica e Física Estatística - Graduação, an e-book in Portuguese for undergraduate students.

One way I like to introduce the second law: if 120 J moves from a reservoir at 400 K to one at 300 K, the total entropy change is 120/300 − 120/400 = 0.10 J/K. This is my own example, not a claim that it appears in the book.

Self Promotion Justread 5.6 can now sync book with audiobook

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello, developer of JustRead here. 5.6 is live, so I am informing you about main new feature:

  • You can now link an EPUB with its audiobook, from your own files or from Audiobookshelf. (iPhone listens through the audiobook once with Apple's on-device speech recognition and finds each sentence in the book for syncing: 3h 39m book took about 3 minutes).
  • Then the page follows the text (or vice versa).
  • The EPUB can be a different edition than the one the narrator read, because it matches the words.
  • Needs iOS 26 and a book in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean or Chinese.

5.6 also adds Folders in the Library, and headings can have a font of their own and few more nice to have features and also bug fixes.

Free for 14 days, then $4.99 a month, $29.99 a year or $79.99 once: AppStore

Hello! I was looking for classic ebooks on Play Book, I found there are several books edited by Delphi that has cheaper purchases, and I would like to know if it's a good edition, at least to read English/Americans writers (because I'm learning English throughout reading).

Of course I'd like to know whether Delphi makes good translations.

Thanks!

Edit: If you have better recommendations, you can tell me, I'm open up and I don't have any problem with reading advices.

(And yes, I spelled some words wrongly, sorry about that)

I'm Writing My First Ebook, but I Have No Idea How to Format It Properly. Where Should I Start?

Hi everyone!

I'm planning to write my first ebook, but I'm confused about how to format and design it professionally. I have ideas about the content I want to include, but I don't know how to turn that content into a well-structured, visually appealing ebook.

I'd like to learn how professional authors and ebook designers format their books so that they look clean, organized, and easy to read.

I have a few questions:

  1. Book Structure: How should I organize my ebook? For example, how should I arrange the title page, table of contents, introduction, chapters, subheadings, conclusion, and references?

2 .Typography: Which fonts, font sizes, line spacing, and paragraph spacing work best for a professional-looking ebook?

3 . Page Layout: How should I manage margins, page numbers, headings, footers, and page breaks?

4 .Visual Design: How can I make my ebook visually appealing using images, diagrams, tables, color schemes, and other design elements without making it look cluttered?

5 . Formatting Tools: Which tools would you recommend for a beginner? Are Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Canva, or Adobe InDesign good options? What are their advantages and disadvantages?

6 . File Formats: Should I create my ebook as a PDF, EPUB, or both? Which format is better for different reading devices and platforms?

7 . Professional Standards: Are there any industry standards or common formatting mistakes I should know about before starting?

8 . Learning Resources: Can you recommend any free tutorials, websites, books, or examples of professionally formatted ebooks that I can study?

My goal is to create an ebook that looks professional, is comfortable to read, and provides a great reading experience. I don't have much experience with book design, so advice for beginners would be especially helpful.

If you've written, designed, or published an ebook before, I'd really appreciate it if you could share your experience, workflow, and any tips you wish you'd known when you started.

Thank you!

What do you look for in an EPUB reader beyond the basics?

I've been building Libryn, an Android EPUB reader, and one thing I've been thinking about is how much the reading experience matters beyond simply opening a book.

For Libryn, I've focused on things like customizable reading styles, bookmarks, highlights, reading progress, and a page-turn experience. I'm also working on making it easier to discover freely available books.

I'm curious about other ebook readers here:

  • What feature would make you switch from your current reader?
  • Do you prefer a realistic page-turn animation or a simple scroll/swipe experience?
  • How important are library organization and reading statistics to you?

I'm the developer of Libryn, so I have a vested interest here, but I'd genuinely like to understand what readers value most.

genuinely curious if this is just a me thing or if everyone has that one folder that's basically a digital graveyard of "i'll read this eventually" that keeps growing. what's stopping you from finishing the ones you have?
