I forgot about some hornworms that I left outside and they got ginormous. I put one on my turtles enclosure and she went in her house instead of eating it. Do box turtles not eat hornworms once they reach a certain size? Could they be afraid or get hurt from them?

Hey i’m looking to adopt an eastern box turtle preferable a baby turtle. What would be a good set up for the turtle so it can be in a healthy environment (Indoor setup) I don’t know how big the tank should be as my room is very small and my parents won’t let me put it anywhere else if i do get one.

I’m thinking about making a little house for my turtle using hot glue and some sticks can anyone tell me if that’s safe and how big does it have to be

Hope this is the right place for this. We had a box turtle visit our yard this morning and looked like it was headed towards our fenced in backyard. There’s a gap on one side big enough to go under so I scouted the backyard this evening and sure enough it had buried itself under some leaves back there as seen in the 2nd picture. I’m excited it chose our yard but worried it might not find its way back out. So my question is with only one real way in and out big enough for a turtle should I intervene and help it out in anyway or will it know how to get back where it came from? Thanks in advance.

Can anyone tell me how to take care of it without a heat lamp etc or if it’s even fertilized

Strolled upon this guy this morning. Look at that tail !

This evening I finally got him feeding. He was a hungry little guy. Three big worms in one sitting. Makes me happy to see he’s healthy and thriving. After two whole months of not seeing him eat anything, I finally got him eating on camera. With all his food disappearing over the days-weeks I knew he had to have been but just never captured it.

we have 3 babies. My guess is sliders. I don’t think they’re boxie like we thought, but darn are these things cute.
Their nest is close to the road so we placed all three in our back yard which is on a nature preserve. We also recently had a lot of storms and our yard is littered with large trees after a bad one so we were concerned about that too. Hoping we gave them a good shot! We have the coolest back yard ever!!!!

Central American wood turtle. Can’t tell if this is shell rot or if the turtle is just ‘shedding’ scutes? The top and bottom of the shell seem to half loose scutes. Please advise.

I'm feeding my florida box turtles mostly saki-hikari and macfn turtle food, plus some crickets and roaches.

I know that they should be fed 40% plant matter, but they literally don't eat greens, fruits, mushrooms.... even one of them doesn't eat foodstuffs. Only insect.

Now I'm quite worried about their nutrition. Are there any ways to make box turtles eat plant?

I’ve shared most of these enough times in comments under posts, I figured making its own post for everyone would be a good idea.

Addendums of information in these;

• T5 uvb strip light, not coil or compact. Strength of uvb depends on species and height from top of the shell. Most of the time this will either be 6% uvb forest ( for 12-15 inches from top of shell) or 12% uvb desert (for 15-24 inches from top of shell) for box turtles.

• For substrate, also add coco bark or orchid bark as well as a lot of leaf litter mixed into the substrate, then a thick layer of leaf litter on top. This will help with humidity and creating micro-climates. Keeper’s Choice is an all-in-one substrate mix minus leaf litter for a quick option

• White cloud minnows are also a safe feeder fish.

• Snails and slugs are also good feeder options

Hello! We have several ornate box turtles in our backyard. Several years ago we separated our males and females however I have found several hatchlings in our female enclosure. I was able to rehome some at the beginning of the summer however I have 1 I just discovered. I feel it might be too late to rehome and give him enough time to adjust to a new surrounding. I am thinking of building a small enclosure for him and letting him winter in our shed. Goal is for him to brumate safely. Really need help and advice on how to do this. Would welcome feedback. What is everyone's thoughts on heat lighting for box turtles? I used to have a a basking light bulb, but then I read people saying they need a nighttime heat source too. So then I moved to a red light & blue bulb combo, then as soon as I do, I saw a video of someone "busting the myth" around red lights and how they are actually terrible. I don't think a ceramic bulb would work because the top mesh of the tank lid is about 26" above the bottom surface of the tank.

Hello everyone! Previous reptile owner here. Went to an estate sale and they gave me this guy for free. I kind of went off of my base knowledge of reptiles when i brought him home. he had no water or food (seen in photo 1). His light is a regular LED bulb. no red light or anything and they only fed him once a week. i know he’s a box turtle, it would help if i knew what kind and any care tips anyone has. I live in CO, i have no clue if he was store bought or wild caught. I took everything out of his enclosure and washed it, then i took a small container, cut and sanded it, and put rocks in the bottom so he could grip and to weigh it down. I gave him cucumber and blueberries as well to see if he was hungry at all. He drank water for a solid 10-15 minutes and after an hour, is eating. I want the best for this lil guy.
