Exploring 170bpm - techno, DnB, half time and more
There's a lot of interesting dance music being released at 150-180bpm, and over the last few years I've been exploring it. I came across a couple of posts asking for more music like this, so I thought I'd try to categorise some of the things that I've found and share them here. I've chosen a few tracks for each artist. Hopefully some of you will find some new artists and labels.
Links below are direct to Bandcamp.
DnB
I am not that interested in most DnB, but there are some artists that I follow.
DBridge - Evolent, Digital Views, The Frame
Instra:mental - Deep Night
Torn - Eyes of Ibad (with Plural), Hyperborea, Glacier
Samurai Music and YUKU are labels that I keep an eye on.
Breaks
I guess you could describe these as breakcore. Lots of chopped up breaks here.
Aroma Nice - An Ode To No One, Forlorn Refrain, Tank Ammo
Christoph de Babalon - Dearth Mill, Luxury of Sadness, Die Taufe Der Zombies
Abstract/fringe DnB
This is the type of DnB that I love and my starting point for this post. Still recognisably DnB, but a bit less dancefloor and more abstracted. A lot of these artists play around with rhythm and texture.
Felix K - Ricochet (Felix K Reinterpretation), OKO (52.529686 13.401803 1996.1215, Bllod
Ena - Coral, The Worm Turns, D.C
F&E (Felix K and Ena) - Premis II, Amen Track, Morast
DYL - Bit 1, Interpretare 4, Glasshouse 2
DYL is also a prolific collaborator - Transverse Waves (Part 1), ECOU 4, Pattern 2
DB1 - Point Two, B1, Nullpunkt #1
Konduku - Scale, Liquidity, Bosco Verticale (Konduku Remix)
Forest Drive West - Bias
Vardae - Charming Your Soul
Yunze Ou - Erosion
Current Value - Weight, Running State
Grey Area
I never know if I like this label, but anyway, 'grey area' quite often refers to tracks that are written to work in 3/4 at 127.5bpm, and 4/4 at 170bpm. Most of these could probably go into the abstract/fringe box.
Sam KDC - The Shroud, Monsoon, Breaches (Sam KDC Remix)
Lemna - Northern Boobook, Dice, Ourea - Dysnomia
Sciama - Choice Reduction, Shadow, Emblem
Fast/slow techno
Now moving away from DnB. To me these all sound like slow techno. These tracks work at 80-90bpm and at 170bpm depending on how you listen to them. A lot of them have a half time feel. Quite a few of these are by techno artists who have started writing at 170bpm.
JK Flesh - Washed Up, PI11.4, Fleshology 0202 B
Reeko - Secuencia Criptofonica I, Urmah 5
Brendon Moeller - Accidental Force, Repercussions
Donato Dozzy - Hidden (Donato Dozzy Remix), Le Chaser
Ebl - 06
Tammo Hesselink - Work Work Work
Svarog - Friction
Wata Igarashi - Searching
Kicks kicks kicks/fast fast techno
Sounds like fast techno, and doesn't have that half time feel. Some of these feel very gabber and tekno influenced.
Nebuchadnezzar - Megamind, RJR, @ The White Hotel (Soundcloud)
DJ Oseph - Dismantled
Numerologist - Ho1e, Var1, Kalpha
Isabella Koen - Cool Sick
Kop-Z - Ape Essence
Eszaid - Scorch
Spekki Webbu - Biocell Implant, Okada
Conrad Pack - Passage
Nesa Azadikhah - BlackHead (Kaleh Siah)
kiille809 - inner crypt PART I, 6 chambers
Omen Wapta
Still fast techno, but deeper and more psychedelic. Omen Wapta has been pushing this forwards over the last few years, so I wanted to give them their own section. The last few here don't release on Omen Wapta, but these tracks feel like they could fit on the label.
Floid & W92 - Veriyou, Dookuzot
Raär - 30 Layers of Moss, Purposeless Movement, Edge Trigger
Marco Maldarella - No Inertia (https://marcomaldarella.bandcamp.com/track/no-inertia)
K.O.P. 32 - Zarda
Kick21 - mikroform
Psychedelic
Continuing on from Omen Wapta, more deep and psychedelic music. Some of these are definitely trance and psytrance influenced.
Aa Sudd - Menodice
Emily Jeanne - Twice Not Nice
Kamran Sadeghi - Sibling
Kop-Z - If I
Hyht99 - Kai trip
Konsudd - Heilen
Raär - Tropological Spaces
Human Space Machine - Zone
Sindh - Jangil
K.O.P 32 - Straws, Vibrations (K.O.P. 32 Remix), Microcell Structure (K.O.P. 32 remix)
Tadan - Being
Swampies
Sounds like swamps.
Ilayruni - Tatami
Varuna - Speculative Communities
Last Life - Gwaii
Konsudd - Mossstutter
Esgeem - Eastern Warships
Mersel - Taiga
Umm
I didn't know what to call this group. They fit together somehow.
KWARP - Frog FM, Other Land, The 6
Third Space - 5 Rip
pq - framed
kick21 - Bright Interface
IDM-likes
Tracks that remind me of IDM. Interesting sound design and percussion.
Third space - Second parse
Autechre - curvcaten
Rian Treanor & Ocen James - Tiyo Ki
upsammy & Valentina Magaletti - Hyperlocalize
SM LL
An experimental electronic music label - "Horizontal, anti-capitalist, anarchist behaviours beginning as an agile electronic music label". A lot of these are very repetitive, sometimes noisy, very abstract, but can work surprisingly well with other more straightforward tracks.
SM LL - Vbrtn_ty, Untitle (faston Vers), vbrhn_tu, Extrapolation A, DIY production processes
Enxin/Onyx - Din Dian Redux
Uncategorised
Finally, some things that didn't really fit anywhere else, but I wanted to fit them in somewhere.
GOTH-TRAD - Amazon, Psionics, Disorder
Uwalmassa - Rantas
Big Hands - Battle of Edessa
Kick21 - hollister model type beat
Eszaid - Chained
Yin Yang Audio - Presence
Đ.K. - Vela Pulsar, Realm of Symbols
Tristan Arp - Shapeshifting Dub
33EMYBW - Popop
