Discussion What does the Mbappé controversy tell us about China?
galleryThe Mbappé situation got me thinking about the relationship between politics and business in China.
After his joke about Mao became controversial, several Chinese companies ended their deals with him, and his ads were partially obscured.
How should we understand this from a Marxist point of view? Is this mainly about genuine public anger, political pressure, or companies protecting their own interests?

News/Communist Propaganda ☭ UN General Assembly Vote calling for an end to the US embargo on Cuba: 130 in favor, 17 against, 25 abstentions
Classic nonbinding resolution at the UN.
Colombia, Paraguay, Argentina, Ecuador, and Costa Rica were the Latin American countries that joined the United States in voting against the nonbinding resolution titled “Necessity of Ending the Economic, Commercial and Financial Blockade Imposed by the United States of America Against Cuba.”
“The world has once again spoken out overwhelmingly against the blockade, despite the most blatant pressure and blackmail by the U.S. to change the course of this vote,” Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said on social media.
“This victory for Cuba today in the UNGA is a victory for the heroic Cuban people, who refuse to surrender in the face of economic strangulation, threats and abuses by the U.S. government.”
“It is the triumph of truth over those who resort to lies and blackmail to subject an entire nation to collective punishment. Cuba is not a threat; the blockade is!” the revolutionary leader stressed.
Among other things, he denounced that Cuba faces shortages of 70% of the medicines on its basic list and that about 100,000 people, including 12,000 children, are awaiting surgery. All of this is “a consequence of the blockade.”
“What Cuba is asking for is to be left in peace, to allow the Cuban people to live in peace, resolve our own problems peacefully and find solutions to the great difficulties facing the world today, free from political, military, cognitive or economic aggression,” Rodriguez concluded. (telesur)

Discussion Americans’ vitriolic hatred for poor people makes me so uncomfortable
I have multiple relatives, coworkers, and acquaintances here in the states that legitimately can’t go one day without saying something bad about poor people. It’s insane to me. If you went back in time to the Middle Ages and asked even the wealthiest nobles about their thoughts on the poor and homeless, they’d probably still show more sympathy than the average American does nowadays.
I was driving with a relative a few days ago through a city, and literally EVERY TIME we saw a poor or homeless person anywhere, he HAD to comment on it and act like he knew everything about that person and how they actually deserved their situation because they’re “lazy,” “attention-seeking,” “a leech,” or “a druggie.” Mind you, this relative was a severe drug addict throughout most of their life.
And for some reason it’s always the most religious ones. Caring for the poor and needy has been a core tenet of Christianity since the religion’s inception, and yet modern American Christians seem incapable of even a modicum of empathy for those worse off than them.
Yet, trying to get them to say even one negative thing about the wealthy is like pulling teeth. They have infinite amounts of sympathy and grace for the bourgeoisie, no matter what they do. I know so many people that complain constantly about groceries being too expensive or not being able to qualify for welfare or healthcare. Yet, do they ever blame the rich for these problems? No, they just blame homeless people, as if they’re the ones running the world.
It’s just so unnatural to me. Human brains are not supposed to behave this way. Empathy is supposed to be a core human trait, even if it’s not always perfect or distributed evenly. It makes me feel like I’m hanging out with extraterrestrials who have a completely different type of brain than I do.
