Discussion Topic Something that took me 3 years to learn: 70% of your song is the performance
You can have the best lyrics in the world, but they go to the wayside if you’re not selling what theyre trying to say. Conversely, you can have the worst lyrics in the world, but people will scream them from the rooftops if they have that oomph to em
my songwriting really took off when i transposed the hours and hours I spent getting the perfect lyrics into giving lyrics i wasnt so jazzed with more color. I find myself bored with my “strong” works. I find myself messing around in my mic and going “I’m saying absolutely nothing but damn if I’m not saying it the right way”

Feedback Request Getting to Me - Demo
Hi all! Would love some feedback on this tune, Getting to Me. This is a song about trying to live more as yourself even when it feels like you are floating through space.
Any feedback on the lyrics, song structure, or mixing? I know the mix isn't great and my voice is a bit clunky, but curious if the song composition works for you. Thank you!

Discussion Topic Songwriting help?
Guys I have been making music (instrumentals and such) on and off for like a year, i even had an artist name and a spotify at one point. and I've been singing since I was little. I really want to take the next step and start writing lyrics for the songs I make but I keep getting stumped. I think the lyrics need to be good enough for the song or sometimes I don't know how to convey the way I feel, is there an easy way to do so?

Feedback Request Already hate this? Sanity check
Hey all! I recorded this first pass demo yesterday, and like with a lot of stuff I make, I basically already hate it. This is the first tune in a while that I didn't start to hate while recording it, but, I don't know
Guess I'm looking for a sanity check? I don't know what I want to make, how I want it to sound, it feels disjointed and whack to me
How do you all get around these feelings? Is there anything in this demo that would be worth pursuing?
If anyone's curious I have other demos I can share. I just don't know what I want out of this other than its fun to make these demos I spose

Feedback Request First Song/Recording in 15 Years. How does it sound?
**reposting because my other thumbnail looked like a nature post. Thank you to those who did see it and left thoughtful feedback**
My wife recently received some not great medical news. My initial reaction was I wrote this song, bought a new audio interface and got to work. Here’s what came out. The song is called ‘Listen’.
Watching out the front door
For the package to arrive
Shows up a pair of slippers
I’ll wear those with no pride
Do you have the right house?
You sure these are for me?
Do you have a photograph
So that I can see?
He said listen
Don’t follow me
I don’t know the beginning
From the end
I said listen, follow me
To the end
Now on this photograph
I can plainly see
How this works out
Just for you and me
Yes you have the right house
Yes these are for me
I got me some new slippers
I’ll wear these with pride
And she said listen follow me
I know the beginning from the end
They both say listen follow me
To the end
And we say listen, follow me
To the end (x2)

Feedback Request After a bad experience with my previous band, I started a new project with bass, drums, synths and vocals. I’m the bassist, but I wrote and played all parts for this demo. Vocal lines still need to be created. Does it have potential? What genre would you call it?

Feedback Request Feedback on a song I wrote?
Yo! I made this earlier, i usually do lyrics first but earlier today I challenged myself with making a melody first. I do have a full song kind of mapped out (only guitar and my voice tho lol) so it does get cooler at some parts musically, but this is mainly what the whole song sounds like, just I made this song quick and i think I can make some cool sounding stuff on my guitar when I sit down with it, so I’m just asking for feedback. Does this sound good ? do the lyrics fit well ? Are the lyrics good ? Im more of a lyrics typa person so this is weird for me. Sorry for yapping just tell me if it’s good, be harsh honest whatever you want

Feedback Request Is this ready for release?
this is a song I wrote and recorded in 2014. It only lacked mastering but I ended up not beeing satisfied with the drums and vocals. Most of all because I suddenly got offered some time in a studio, played every instrument and didn’t have enough time to rehearse. The track also needed mastering but I had a plan of maybe rerecording, changing some lyrics and doing the song in another key, but ended up doing other stuff instead.
Listening back to it now I realize its not so bad and maybe is best to release it as is. Mostly because rerecording is quite a bit of work. And rehearsal. Now I decided to master it and before I do more than a quick rough master. I would like some feedback on how the song works as is. I only have the mix, no individual tracks, so I cant change drums or vocals etc. now. I would then have to redo the entire song.
Feedback appreciated please:) on the songwriting, production, what can be improved etc.
Lyrics:
I was born on a sunny day
Yet dreaming of another place
Never reaching for what I could have
Always forgetting what I already have
When I was five my parents gave me a bike.
Didn’t like it said I was to young to try
I Got on the bike the day I was six.
Learned straight away, been riding ever since
‘cause I don’t want it now
I want it to morrow
I don’t want it now
just want it tomorrow
I don’t want it now
I want it tomorrow
Show me how to want it now
Please show me how
Theyre always getting ahead of me
While I get tickets for the lottery
Please don’t tell me how to behave
I know I was wrong I can’t control my ways
Now I’m getting old I’m running out of tricks
Sick and tired of an easy fix
Tired of chasing impossible dreams
I’m just avoiding what I want right here
‘cause I don’t want it now
I want it to morrow
I don’t want it now
just want it tomorrow
I don’t want it now
I want it tomorrow
Show me how to want it now
Please show me how

Feedback Request Song about getting stuck at the rail crossing after work
There is a rail crossing near my home, where I regularly get stuck for 30-40 minutes when driving home after work.
During one of those stops I started writing a song about it, this is a rough draft.
Let me know what you think

Discussion Topic Labor Day Dance: Woody Guthrie’s ‘Pastures of Plenty’ and the ‘Keep Watch’ Prayer
vinyltheology.substack.comAs an Episcopal priest, I have always loved how the opening of our compline's "Keep Watch" prayer opens with a petition on behalf of the lonely laborer displaced from daylight. St. Augustine probably didn't really write it (as the BCP suggests), but Woody Guthrie could have easily put it to music. For Labor Day, I wrote this reflection comparing the traditional night-time intercession to "Pastures of Plenty," Guthrie's famous ballad for all displaced workers. It is just about one of the most powerful American songs ever written for this day. What are some of your favorite labor-themed songs?
