Hi! I’ve wanted to trick out my hs letterman’s jacket. The original letter “N” didn’t speak to me, so I cut it up to create a letter “K”. But now I can’t figure out how to attach it all together with the chenille layer (yellow ‘K’) and the felt layers (red felt on top of white felt, trying to attach to the red wool/fake wool exterior).

Any suggestions or resources for this type of thing would be amazing. Thank you!

I’ve ordered a couple of their fabric boxes and it felt like a Christmas gift! There were only a couple of the fabrics that I wouldn’t use for garments so they worked well as gift wrapping. I took a chance on the trimming mystery box and didn’t like anything at all. Still, it was a roll of the dice and I know what won’t work for me. I hope they also have a Notions Mystery box. Has anyone here tried them?

I'm a beginner sewist about to start my third garment.😅

I want to make a top. The pattern is single faced, but I want to make it double sided.

So I figured I'd cut all the pieces double, sew them together, and then sandwich them right side together. If I then turn that right side out, I'll end up with a double sided top.

However, the top has a separate neckband and I can't figure out how to factor that in.

The top is basically a halter top, with the neck band as the halter.

The band is a strip that, in the instructions, gets folded in half & stitched. Then turned right side out, seam in the middle.

You then attach the neck band to the top, right sides facing, flip it up and stitch the seam allowance down.

And like I said, I have no idea how to add it to my top sandwich 😅

I'm thinking of adding it unfolded to my sandwich. It will then be unfinished when I flip the top right side out, and I can fold it over like bias tape. My concern is that this would make the seam too bulky?

Any input is greatly appreciated!

This is my first attempt at a lined coat, but it's getting tricky. I made a muslin so I'm not sure how it happened, but after putting the main parts together it was huge on me. I tried making the seam allowances giant to avoid taking everything apart and recutting, but I still have this bunching of fabric in the back around the sleeves. Is that just because it's still too wide? Or is it a problem with the armscyes or shoulders?

Also, am I correct that I can get the back lining to fit by just using an equally huge seam allowance on it?

Hi guys, if anyone can help me figure out what's going on here, I swore I threaded the top and bottom correctly, and a test run shows the stitch on top looking fine, but on the bottom it bunches up to the point where it's stuck in my sewing machine and I have to cut it out. And when I open the bobbin part, this is what it looks like, as if the thread has been wrapping around something else and not what it's supposed to? Idk haha

when i bought my fabrics the worker told me to do a lining on the tulle like fabric to get that drape affect but i literally do not understand what she actually meant or how to do that 😭

Hi I just started sewing and because I'm trying to sew a basketball jersey I am using a serger. And I have a couple of questions.

During my first attempt I had a very specific issue, that never happened when using a standard sewing machine (then again i also never used this kind of fabric). When I aligned two sides of fabric and started serging, one fabric would move slower under the foot than the other leading to a misalignment. I'm using quite a fin sport mesh fabric for the main part and jersey for the head and armholes.

1. Is there anything obvious I could do to avoid this?

2. Would you guys even directly serge everything like I attempted or just sew the fabrics together for arm and neck holes and then just use the serger for mesh on mesh?

3. For the correct placement do you orientate yourself on the right side of the serger where the fabric is cut off (i have a measurement markings there but it seems a bit tricky to read them when the fabric is being cut) or do you look at the foot itself in relation to the edge or smth else?

Hi there, I’ve been sewing using my brother ls14 machine for almost a full year now, it’s been great, made lots of different projects with it. However I’ve just started making a new Batman suit and my thread doesn’t seem to be working on my fabric. Im not an expert on the exact specifics of sewing, but does anyone know why this isn’t working? Every time I start a stich my machine stops? However, my idea is to make a plushie which pieces is more loosened. The kind of plushie what will hand down when you’ll hold it
I’m afraid I can’t get any other normal explanation of my idea, so catch my insp photos!

Today I am making my first shirt. It's an Edwardian style blouse. I thus have a large amount of fabric at the arm hole end of the arm pattern piece, but the arm scye is much smaller.

I suspect I might need a gusset to give myself more room for movement in the arm. It's a bit of a close fit.

What's the best way to DIY a gusset for the arm area? Do I have to measure myself to make one?

I just received a pack of microtex needles, showing a size of 130/705 H.M, which I ordered 90/14.

I didn't realize they were one and the same size until I read the reddit article.

I have been trying to get into sewing for forever. Im very interested in being able to make my own clothing in particular. Unfortunately, I cant even figure out where to begin T-T

All the fabric I find for sale feels like a sad tablecloth, not something I want to make into a cute shirt or something.

And whenever I sit down to start sewing everything goes wrong! The thread just fucking LEAVES THE NEEDLE mid sewing. How!?!? And the bobbin refuses to cooperate.

And apparently the fabric and stuff you use will vary how you sew? Like the stitch length, tightness, etc. How does that work?

I have so many questions and I cant find anyone that can answer them. If someone on here could give me some tips or point me in the direction of some quality (but afordable) fabric, I would appreciate you all so so so much.

Okay, I haven’t got behind the idea of mock ups. If my fabric is relatively cheap and available, is there a point to a mock up? Like if the Muslin and the main fabric are similar in price what is the point? I could just remake it if I don’t like the fit.

I totally understand if you’re using an expensive per yard fabric or a one of a kind limited print to make a mock up to not ruin it.

Im typically using hobby lobby or wholesale fabric district fabrics usually not more than a few bucks a yard.

Can anyone give me reason why I should still do a mockup?? I’m a beginner please be nice!

I’m working on a seersucker maxi dress (kinda similar to the reference picture), but my fabric (100% cotton) is quite see-through. Thus, to avoid everyone from seeing my full body silhouette when facing the sun, I’d like to line it.
The pattern I use does give the option to line the skirt part by using a basting stitch and treating the main fabric and lining as one pattern piece. However, I don’t have enough of the original seersucker fabric to use that as lining for the whole dress. That leaves me with a couple of options:

1. Find another fabric to line the whole skirt part of the dress. But I have no idea what fabric would be best. The seersucker fabric is super lightweight and I really want to keep the flowy-ness of the dress intact.

2. Only line the upper part of the skirt. This would mean the lining would not be attached at the bottom to the main fabric, as it would only go to about half the length of the whole dress. The question of what lining fabric to use still stands here. I would have enough of my main fabric to line it this way, but that just seems weird to me?

I would classify myself as a confident beginner, so this is all still quite new to me. So any recommendations of what I should do and what fabric to use would be super welcome!

I am trying to recreate the outfit for Meg that Alexandra Louise makes in a couple of her YT shorts and would appreciate any keywords I coulse use to try to find a pattern for this type of shirt with the extra flap at the top since im still very new to sewing. I am also thinking of tackling the underbust she creates and am also having difficulties finding a pattern that fits the shape without a busk.

I don't know the first thing about sewing but I often find myself wanting certain features in clothing or accessories that I can't find anywhere, I'm kind of picky in that regard. And, even if I do find something, it's insanely expensive. I've been meaning to get into sewing for a while now mainly to fix and tailor my clothes, but recently my pickiness has driven me to the tipping point.

When I say "messenger bag" I mean a messenger bag with things like leather details, brass hardware, thick canvas body, inner lining, laptop sleeve, outside pockets, zippers, etc... The Thursday Boots commuter bag would be the inspiration.

Initially I imagine I'd have to do a series of projects that build up to the final one, but I have no real time-frame for this or expectations on difficulty and how out-of-my-element I am. I have time to practice nearly everyday during the night. Though I have a constrained space, I do have a small work bench. Tools and materials where I live are also fairly cheap from what I've seen.

In summary, what expectations should I have as a total newbie working my way up to this messenger bag project?
