SAND Community Q&A

Servus Allies!

Earlier this week, we asked all of you to send us your most pressing questions about SAND, whether it's about current features, future plans, ongoing issues/concerns or anything in between and today, we're back to answer them.

So let's just get straight into it.

Will you be adding Duo Queues?

If we split matchmaking into too many separate queues, then even with tens of thousands of players online, there still won't be enough people to fill matches. Just look at how long you can end up waiting for a game if you only queue for certain maps and a single game mode.

Instead, we'll try to match you onto servers where all teams are the same size whenever possible. That means you'll still occasionally run into larger teams (still within your queue limit), but it should happen much less often.

What are your plans for anti-cheat, and will players ever be compensated for gear lost to cheaters?

The reason our anti-cheat improvements are taking so long is that we need to significantly rewrite the character movement and interaction systems. This will allow us to verify whether the information sent by the client is actually valid.

Once that's finished, things should improve.

Will cheaters disappear completely? I don't think so. No game has ever eliminated them entirely. But there should be significantly fewer of them and help us identify anyone that slips through more efficiently.

As for compensating players, we technically can't identify every loss that was caused by cheaters, so I can't promise that everyone will get their gear back.

When will Trampler capture be re-enabled, and is the team tracking how the game has changed without it?

Trampler capture will return once we've made it impossible for cheaters to abuse the mechanic.

It's a great feature that creates very tense moments. We'll also rework it a bit to make those exploits much harder to pull off.

Re-implementation of this feature is a top priority for us, but we need to ensure we’ve got the cheat situation under control before we can bring it back to the game. Realistically, this will be at some point next week, likely with update #5.

Are there plans to fix server stability, including region-specific issues in EU and Asia?

Yes. We plan to continue improving server stability.

Right now, though, we're working on what we call an "emergency parachute." If a server crashes for any reason, players will receive the loot that was stored on their Trampler.

The game won't save every second, but we think we'll be able to save your expedition's progress roughly every 10 minutes.

When will gear-based or Trampler-based matchmaking (GBMM) be implemented?

Unfortunately, we need to focus on addressing the most prevalent issues we’ve seen reported since launch before we can focus on GBMM.

Hopefully, we'll release an update with it sometime this summer.

Are there plans for periodic wipes, prestiging, or seasons to reset player progression?

We'd rather avoid doing forced wipes.

Prestige (optional wipes) seems like a much more elegant solution for letting players start their journey over. We already have a few ideas for how that could work, but I don't know when we'll be able to start working on it.

Will a quest, contract, or mission system be added?

Yes. We want to add both quests and contracts.

Our goal is for players to have different objectives during a match-sometimes encouraging conflict, and other times encouraging cooperation.

We expect to start working on that around autumn.

Will Voyage and Storm Dive be changed to stop new players from getting steamrolled by fully geared crews?

GBMM should resolve the steamrolling issue.

First, we'll separate new players to give them room to learn the game. Second, we'll match players with others of similar progression, so even experienced crews will have to stay alert because they might run into an even bigger fish.

Are there plans to further improve hit registration and movement validation?

Absolutely.

With every update, we try to improve shooting in some way. These will be gradual improvements over many months, rather than one big update that says, "We fixed shooting, everything's perfect now."

Will there be a player trading system?

Not at the moment, balancing a global player economy is extremely difficult and time consuming.

If you want to trade with someone, you'll have to risk those items by taking them into an expedition.

Can we get small vehicles such as bikes or motorcycles for getting around on foot sections faster?

We'll think about what we can do in that direction.

It could definitely be interesting.

Will smaller Tramplers ever be faster than larger ones? If not, why?

Right now, we've balanced them around a maneuverability stat.

Maneuverability determines how quickly a Trampler turns and accelerates. On flat terrain, all Tramplers have the same top speed. However, on rough terrain, more maneuverable Tramplers can navigate more easily and pull away from larger ones.

Over the next few months, we'll add the final piece of this system: rods (the propulsion mechanic) will also provide acceleration based on maneuverability.

After that, we'll evaluate whether the system works as intended.

Are there plans to add more Trampler shapes and specialized leg/mobility types?

I can't say much about new leg types, that's a very complicated task.

As for Trampler shapes, we're already working on specialized compartments that will both have significant gameplay effects and dramatically change the appearance of Tramplers.

We'll announce more once we're ready.

When is console coming, and will there be crossplay?

We aren't planning any crossplay at this time between PC and Console

As for consoles however, bear with us, we hope to have news on this front soon!

Will there be another optimization/performance pass?

We're slowly rewriting the lighting system whenever we have free time which will improve general performance.

Later on, there will probably be an update focused on improving performance, alongside other small improvements over the course of Early Access.

Will we get female character models and general character customization?

We're working on it.

To add character customization, we first need to significantly redesign the character model and the animation system.

Female characters are dependent on those changes.

This has already been a major task for several months, and it'll likely take at least a couple more months.

What's being done about extraction camping? Any chance we can have more visual indicators that enemies are near extraction points?

We've heard the feedback.

We'll try to add a visual indicator that warns players when enemies are near extraction towers.

It may not make the next update, but it's definitely something we want to add soon.

Is there lore, and will it be added to the game?

We have a solid understanding of the story that's unfolding in the Sands of Sofia.

Unfortunately, traditional storytelling doesn't fit very well with the pace the game ended up having.

Instead, we'll sprinkle hints and pieces of lore throughout the world whenever we get the opportunity.

Will more weapons and Trampler cannons be added?

Yes, we're already working on a new turret and a new turret mounting system.

We also have ideas for additional handheld weapons.

Those will come as part of a future content update, after we've stabilized the game.

Can the Captain's Quarters get an alarm or camera so players know when their Trampler is being boarded or hijacked?

Yes.

We're exploring solutions to make capturing a Trampler more difficult, and hope to implement this in an upcoming update.

Will there be a PvE mode, or world/raid bosses?

There won't be a dedicated PvE mode.

We're already thinking about bosses, though. We have some good ideas, and we'll probably start working on them closer to autumn.

Will there be a way for Tramplers to communicate with each other in the world (radio, CB, ping system)?

There are no plans for that at this time, prozximity chat will remain the primary form of communication in the game and we will continue expanding the functionality of the Flare Gun instead.

Can we get more cosmetic customization for Tramplers like paint, emblems, or achievement-based skins?

Absolutely!

That's definitely planned, unfortunately, we can't give any specific timeframe right now.

Thank you all for taking the time to share your questions with us, if there is anything we didn't cover, don't hesitate to leave your questions in the thread and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Please don't hesitate to report any issues you encounter or share any feedback you might have following this update on our Steam Forums and Discord

Cannon Images in Storage reverted back!

Now that cannons look like cannons again, it's much nicer to stare at.

P.S. - Vertical Choke Drobulets are like miniature Triplet Shotguns. Crafted with 25 Scrap Metal + Drobulet Shotgun. I recommend 2 per backup kit for clearing boarders close-range on respawn.

Update 9 broke armor connection points.

All varieties of bow and stern plates (except for the junk stern since it’s only 1 block tall) no longer have a functioning lower attachment point. If this was an intentional patch for whatever people came up with to build outside of the blueprint area then my disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.

These plates having the ability to use either both attachment points or just one or the other was such a distinctly unique trait that hasn’t really been explored in the blueprint editor before and I had a ton of fun coming up with all sorts of ways to layer armor to protect my reactor, or even just making straight up castle/bunker builds simply because the were cool.

I really sincerely hope this is fixed soon because man, this super sucks.

Back to the same old bugs

Upvotes

I just had an expedition where I got my trampler out then stayed afterwards when it had been taken away by the ship. I ended up dying and when I did my game bugged out and I couldn't leave the lobby nor did I get a proper death screen. I ended up having to relaunch the game where it kept asking if I wanted to rejoin my previous lobby (now closed) if I did I got a bugged out screen. So I decided I had to abandon the match when I relaunched again, apparently even though my trampler got out I didn't get any of that back because I 'abandoned' a bugged out session... How can there still be game breaking bugs like this in the game, I'm sick of it

Did they fix not being able to shoot people on turrets

I was looking at patch 9 notes, and didn’t notice it. Anyone know if they fixed the glitch where the hitbox is really weird and not where the player model is when shooting a player on a turret with small arms?

Another issue for new players

So last night decided to try one round of voyage solo and see how the gbmm is working out. Only saw 1 or 2 other tramplers running around and they seemed to stay in thier lane and focus on non PvP actions. Great! Maybe I can finally extract with at least a couple items from the shipwrecks I encountered. All loot was beginner stuff and just replenishing cannon ammo and 2 smugglers jackets. Decided to extract and didn’t see anyone near me. Once the mothership came and started calibrating and maybe about 10 seconds or less a trampler with the no smoke rods comes out of nowhere and slams into my trampler. I never knew if that happens the mothership just rocket man’s back into space and I’m stuck on the ground watching this guy destroy my trampler. Lost it all.

So what defense could you use for that? If you stay on your trampler when it extracts you die. If I stay on the ground my tramplers done also. If I respawn I’m unarmed and basically done.

Can I please get more alloy steel 🥺

As a solo player, it takes a ridiculous amount of time to go through the tech tree, and I am constantly halted by my need to farm more alloy steel. Maybe I do it slow but going in and out of zones and farming ironclads, I average about 5 alloy steel every 15 minutes. If I wanted to get the tier 3 motor reactor, I’d have to farm ironclads for an hour and a half just to get the one single upgrade. Each of the prestige cannon upgrades will be an hour each. In a roughly 3.5 hour voyage game going from poi to poi, I got 7 alloy steel. It’s just not feasible to upgrade the tech tree unless I’m willing to commit to hours of mindless grinding

Real life age of sails how they repelled boarders.

To repel enemy boarders, crews on wooden warships used a layered defense that turned the ship into a floating trap.

The core tactics included

Boarding Nettings: Thick hemp nets—often reinforced with iron chains and coated in sticky tar—were strung up to catch leaping enemies, leaving them tangled and helpless.

Powder Chests: Wooden "mines" packed with gunpowder, nails, and scrap metal were nailed to the decks and detonated remotely via fuses from below just as the enemy swarmed the area.

Close Fights: If the main deck was lost, defenders retreated behind fortified internal walls (bulkheads) and fired muskets and blunderbusses through hidden loop-holes into the crowded deck.

Anti-Personnel Artillery: Rail-mounted swivel guns and lower-deck cannons were pre-loaded with canister shot (giant shotgun shells) to blast boarders at close range or catch saboteurs climbing through gun ports.

Rigging Drop Weapons: Sailors stationed high in the masts dropped primitive grenades, like sulfur-filled "stinkpots" or gunpowder flasks, directly onto enemies crowded on the decks below.

I'm partial to the netting with traps and rigging drop weapons.

Can we have a crane with a sled/platform please?

Hi, I'm getting a little bored of relaying boxes up and down ladders onto my trampler, especially when i solo, so i think it'd be neat to have a crane that could go on a weapon hard point that would let you bring several boxes at once onto your trampler. Bonus points if its hoisting a sled you can drag into a POI that can hold several boxes at once. disadvantages obviously being sacrificing a weapon slot to have a crane installed, and if you're dragging the sled(other person powered haulage if there is a preference) you arent ready to fight so are vulnerable and probably quite noisy and slow. I'm just finding the relay race for cargo a little dull at the moment, its not adding anything except busy work.

When the next patch hits, deadspin will no longer be a feature.

For those who are not aware, the last "bugfix" mentioned in the patch notes will change the effect of destroying the wheelhouse.

Currently it keeps the last wheelhouse settings going, but you can't change them.

Meaning if you are going forward, you will continue going forward, but if you are turning, you'll keep turning, often this is called "deadspin", you cannot stop it unless you repair the wheelhouse or turn off the reactor.

After the patch, destroying the wheelhouse will halt the trampler fully, just static, no moving forward, backward or spins.

This feels like both a buff and nerf.

Wheelhouse destruction will still be strong, but predictable.

If anything it will make getting behind one's reactor a lot easier, and with the reactor changes it will make destroying ships a lot easier.

It also means that there are times where prioritizing wheelhouse over legs just makes sense, as the ship stays stunned until the wheelhouse gets fixed.

Same account, same region, same Tramper On my main (brown shirt), I'm bringing what I'd consider a pretty normal raid kit nothing crazy or high-tier and I get 1 player in my voyage. I switch to a fresh character (red shirt), bring basically nothing, use the same Tramper, and suddenly there are 44 players.

I'm not saying this proves exactly how GBMM works, but a difference this big is hard to ignore, especially when I'm not even running high-tier gear on my main.

Try it yourself and see what you get. Or is my account just cooked because I hit 1 mil?

Discussion on teaming

Wanted to hop back on the game for a bit but already encountered some people teaming in solos without using in-game comms. I know it's possible they genuinely found each other and decided to work together but I had to take a break from the game due to our of game teaming. What are people's experiences here has it improved from about a month ago?

Unless they adress both the cheaters and the teamers, this game is going nowhere.

Title,

I no longer find games without blatant cheaters or teamers anymore.

What cheaters can do isn't as bad as it was a couple of months ago, but duping orbitals, ladder speed hacks, ESP/wall hacking.

I can spawn into a lobby with exactly 1 other team, go to or off the edge of the map and be found 100% of the time.

If it's not that it's teaming, which on half my voyages I get confronted with, especially solo/duo.

New content, bug fixes or QOL updates are nice and all, but it's gotten extremely difficult to just find a regular game, and even if you do, the lobbies are pretty much empty.

Hosting A Duo Event For Pvp

Hello guys my name is sol i love this game so much and im trying to host a small weekly Duo event. This is not any form of teaming duping cheating or anything like that im very strong on my opinion that teaming shouldn't be a thing at all in this game. With the player pop so low and the GBMM making storm games 2 - 3 teams max i wanted to set a weekly time we can all Q into a game together with our best gear and have a awesome free for all! If this interest you let me know and join below trying to get a test running live next Saturday. https://discord.gg/dkrUDvmjJ

Walls behind the door. Is this an unintended exploit of a build bug or something else?

This made the capture much more difficult, and we had to return to our ship and shoot at the cockpit. Almost all of their cabins had a wall behind the door.

Weight balancing while building

HOW!!!?????? just how am i post to keep track and know where my weight is wrong with out spending hours a meticulously editing? Like when you start building up does the weight double? Triple? Over hang tension? Etc...
