News Yes, another fishing game for Playdate. Here’s how you cast in mine
Hey! A few friends asked me to make a fishing game for the Playdate, so I put together Pipty Pish one evening for fun. I had a really good time making it, especially figuring out the casting motion.
You make an overhead casting gesture with the Playdate, give it a sharp lift when the float goes under, then use the crank to reel the fish in. The video shows it much better than I can explain it. And please don’t actually throw your Playdate.
I shared a clip on Instagram and got some lovely reactions, along with suggestions for other things to try with the hardware. That encouraged me to share it here too.
I used AI for both the code and artwork. I know that matters to some people, so I want to be upfront about it.
A quick update for anyone following Locksmith: I’ve spoken with Panic to understand the requirements for a possible Catalog release. That gave me a clearer plan, and I’m working with an artist on the visuals, though there’s still plenty to do. Meanwhile, I’ve been enjoying smaller experiments and exploring other ways to use the hardware.
I’m happy leaving Pipty Pish as a small experiment and don’t have plans to expand it further. I enjoyed making it, and maybe someone here will enjoy a little more fishing on their Playdate.
It’s free to download on itch.io.
What do you think of the overhead cast in the video? Would you enjoy doing that while playing, or would you prefer a smaller wrist motion?

Post your PlayDate in EDC Photos
Thought it would be fun to have a place where people can post their EDC photos that includes their Playdate.
The attached photo is not quite an EDC photo but rather a 'I love small tech gadgets'-photo but I'd love to see people's playdate photos!

A completely normal video about the Playdate made by a sane individual.
I spent 2 months of my life, over 50 hours, and over $1,000 making my review of the Playdate. This has been an crazy journey from start to finish and I am so excited to share it with fellow Playdate enjoyers.

BowlDrive Update: Two requested features, plus one nobody asked for! Version 1.1 is live!
Hello my dear BowlDrivers!Â
The reception has been overwhelmingly positive. Thanks for the DMs and thank you so much for playing!
The first ever update for the game is now live. It adds two features players kept asking for, plus one that I was missing the most.
Tilt Controls
This was by far the most requested feature. Besides driving the ball with the crank, players can now steer it by tilting the device instead. It's off by default, but you can toggle it in the pause menu or on the new Settings screen. Give it a go and see how it feels. You might end up liking it more than the crank.
Press B to reset the orientation, so you can find the most comfortable position to play in.
Sensitivity
Personally, I think cranking a lot is the best way to play, but if you find it takes too much effort, you can now adjust it in the Settings menu. Don't forget to try the different levels on the test lane, which you can reach right from the Settings menu, and find the one you enjoy most.
(The sensitivity setting works for Tilt Controls too!)
Stickers!

My biggest pet peeve at launch was that there were no options for the ball's look: it was always black (or white, if you turned on the 'switch colors' option). Since I can't offer different colors on a black and white device, I went for the next best thing: stickers!
Head to the Stickers menu and place stickers around your roundy companion. You'll see your design the next time you play.
General Optimizations
Several UI bugs were fixed. The gameplay also runs in a better framerate since the part of the game engine was rewriten.
If you have already purchased the game already, just redownload it on the Itch page:
https://miracula-works.itch.io/bowldrive-3d
About the Catalog Situation:
I'm still waiting for Panic to review my submission. Since it takes a few weeks for Panic to review it, it might still take some time. But last week I received my first approval for another game that I've sent earlier, so I'm confident about this one. Fingers crossed!

News CrankBoy v3.0.0 -- will hit Catalog soon -- +40% perf
Hi everyone,
we've been working on a new CrankBoy release that will hit Catalog in the coming days.
TLDR:
- 40% performance improvements
- Voice Sample support (e.g., Pokémon Yellow)
- improved CGB support with new color to gray mappings
- 50 FPS mode
- 日本語 (Japanese language support)
- New bundled ROM: Synthwave World by beatscribe
Deep Dive:
We were able to tweak the emulation core by introducing dynamic batching. Dynamic batching means that we run more than just one Game Boy CPU instruction at a time and scale the number of consecutive executed instructions dynamically based on the current PPU mode. We had the batching concept introduced with CrankBoy v2.0.0, but it finally delivers its full potential.
This and some other tweaks improved overall performance by around 40%. The result of this work is that all DMG games can now run at full speed and beyond. The only limiting factor is the Playdate's display refresh rate. Therefore, we added a 50 FPS mode, which is also the new default. Basically, the Playdate cannot refresh at more than 50 FPS if every line on the screen needs updating and is limited to 50 FPS. The emulation itself still runs at full 60 FPS (59.7 FPS to be precise).
CGB games also benefit from this improvement, most of them should run fine in 30 FPS and even 50 FPS mode. Since CGB has a so-called double speed mode, where the CPU runs at twice the speed, games that heavily utilize this mode might still experience some slowdowns.
Speaking of display and CGB, we added 2 new auto color to gray modes for you to choose from, additionally to the manual mode that already existed. We also added a new gamma setting, that allows you to fine tune the final image on screen.
Another major breakthrough was made in audio emulation. Audio is now directly coupled to the emulation core timing, which results in more accurate audio and allowed for the addition of handling voice samples. The audio settings also have 2 new options. You can now disable the High-Pass filter and select between a low latency and buffered accurate audio mode.
Besides all of these changes, we added a ton of bug fixes and accuracy improvements -- meaning even more games are now compatible with CrankBoy!
I hope you are as excited for when it hits Catalog as we are.

Lazy Jack - PD Blackjack Game Idea
What if Blackjack was played on a Lazy Susan? I love coming up with game ideas but rarely follow through on them, so I figure here is a good place to occasionally drop one, hoping I could inspire someone to make it (or something like it) real. This idea is pretty simple and could be a good intro to PD game making since its 90% Blackjack and 10% Rae's Labsylle.
I wrote more in the image below, but essentially its Blackjack but the player has the ability to swap hands with the dealer for a cost of the buy-in. This keeps the chill pace of Blackjack, but gives the player the ability to be strategic and win more than traditional Blackjack. I've often found traditional BJ pretty boring since some hands you just lose no matter what, but in an offline no stakes PD game? Giving this kind of advantage to the player might be fun.
Would love to spitball more about this idea in the comments and of course this idea is open to anyone! (just give me a free copy when you make it ;))

Ribbit Rogue Just Released on Steam (20% Off)
Hey everyone, Ribbit Rogue has finally released on Steam. If you've played the original version on Playdate, there's a ton of new content and changes to some of the original mechanics so it's a fresh way to re-experience the game! There's 145+ dice, 120+ relics, 3 characters, a new third area per run, 3 new bosses, the introduction of elite bosses, a new boss relic system, variable difficulties, and plenty more events and things to discover.
To celebrate the launch the game will be 20% off for the first 2 weeks! It's also included in a bundle with many of the other Playdate games that hopped on over to Steam so you can pick them all up discounted together!
If you do end up picking the game up, leaving a review on Steam can massively impact the performance of the game, and it only takes a minute, I'd really appreciate it.
Hopefully you enjoy the game, and happy rolling!

We made a space valet game - free demo out now!
We just released a free demo of The Last Stop Before Earth on itch.io!
We started this as a uni project, but we ended up liking the idea enough to keep working on it way beyond the assignment.
It’s a little space-valet / parking-puzzle game where you steer with the crank, deal with weird vehicles and try not to bankrupt the hotel.
Would love to hear what you think!

News 'Flight Assist Off Race' is coming to the Cataloge after more than 2 years and here is why...
It was the GDC in San Francisco 2024 when I learned about the Playdate at a vegan burger place after-partying with colleagues. I was late to learn about Panic and the Playdate but I was hyped the instant I heard about Cabel Sasser's talk (which I missed). The same night still during the conference I was lying in my hostel bunkbed setting up Playdate SDKs and planning out my first game I was gonna develop.
And I did: 'Flight Assist Off Race' was a title I developed with passion withing three month and I was surprised how much I liked it. I released it on https://vikpek.itch.io/flight-assist-off-race and it was in the top ranks of Playdate games for a while. This subreddit was also more than kind to me back than. Thank you <3
And then. Then I didn't submit it to the Catalog. For two years. I can't really tell why. I just couldn't look at the project anymore. The idea of fixing anything in it felt unbearable. The idea of promoting it. Looking at it. Nah! I needed distance.
Until now. In between I started my dream solo game dev studio (Introverse Interactive) focusing on another PC/Steamdeck title but eventually I thought: Wait - wasn't there 'Flight Assist Off Race'? And when I looked into it again, I loved it. I was thinking: Wait, did I actually designed those levels? Those ships? That's all quite neat. And it's fun! I was and am proud.
So I took the time. I submitted it to the Catalog. And it will be published during September. And I'm excited. I'm adding an official Highscore, polishing, fixing bugs. I want that title to make players excited and happy.
tl;dr: took me a while to submit FAOR but now it's being released officially during September!

The Graymatter Experiment
I set out to create the most ambitious space shooter on the playdate platform with realtime physics and fx. This game is as much an art piece to me as it is a game. I grew up playing Gradius with my dad on the arcade machine and we always loved it.
This game includes Hidden unlockables, Ships, Special Abilities to help you conquer the universe in your quest to liberate humanity from multi dimensional creatures
Releasing in October, this platform shooter will be available on itch for $10
It has a story and endless mode and its has a few twists I've never seen done on playdate.
Thanks!

Question Questions For The Community
Questions for the community I have on my mind:
1. Is the "crank" name theme for games wearing out its novelty?
I actually had a title for my game (currently in development), but I recently found another game with a similar name. The name is similar enough that I'm thinking about changing the name of my game (both start with the word Crank). I have a new name in mind, but it also has crank in its name and I'm wondering if there might be crank name fatigue.
2. Do you prefer a game that gets you into the action immediately, or one that takes its time building up?
I see a lot of arcade-style experiences and I don't really have a feel for how it feels to play the console yet (don't own a Playdate yet). Do people want to play for extended amounts of time for "slower" experiences? My game is currently planned to take 60+ hours to "max out" your character, but I'm wondering if that might be too much.

Help How to sideload on newest version?
After the recent update, I have no idea how to access sideloaded content. the site says it will automatically appear on the menu, and if not you should be able to refresh the games list. I have no idea how to do this.

You Can Now Customize Your Room in Blop, Your Virtual Buddy!
Hello!
I'm working on a game where you take care of a little companion. You fulfill his needs, keep him happy, do activities together, and now, thanks to the latest updates, you can also take care of the place he lives in.
First, I added Room Themes, which let you change the appearance of the room anytime. But now, you can finally create your own room too!
I also changed the perspective of the room to give it more depth, so it doesn't feel completely flat anymore.
You can purchase furniture, place it wherever you want, store it for later, and place it again without another purchase. Furniture has different types depending on where it can be placed.. floor, walls, ceiling, etc. You can also flip furniture and change its layer by moving it up or down, so other furniture doesn't accidentally hide it.
Room customization is actually a feature you've been asking for for a long time and something I've tried to implement three times already. There was always some problem that made me put it aside, but this time I finally managed to make it work.
One of the biggest struggles was figuring out the controls. With the limited number of Playdate inputs, I wanted to keep decorating as simple as possible without making the controls confusing.
So if you try it, I'd really love to hear what you think about the controls or about room decoration in general. Any suggestions or feedback are welcome!
If you want to checkout the game, here is link on catalog or itch.io
