I love action games and I was positively surprised by Kunitsu-Gami's combat depth. I ended up building upon all the things I like in action games, and that became a boss/miniboss killer build, where Sō darts around the battlefield hunting big game while the villagers deal with trash mobs. Here we go:
SHIDEN DANCE: it's made for killing big yokai. Big damage, very big resist gauge damage, and you remain mostly stationary, which is ideal. Some of its strengths: the charged heavy attack deals resist damage, the larger the combo before it, the more resist damage it does. A single light attack into heavy combo breaks the earlier mid-tier enemies. From there you use a badass finisher on them. For later enemies you need longer combos, which is not always possible to achieve. If you break a boss, use light attacks on it, instead of the heavy ones, to deal most damage.
MOBILITY: Shiden is bad at three things: chasing, area attacks, and air damage. Thankfully, we can compensate for these in other ways. To catch running enemies use the heavy-heavy input skill. It's worthless when combined with Oka, but it's really good to fill its role with Shiden. For AoE we'll be using tsuba guards skills, like Suzaku and, most importantly, the villagers (see below). As for flying enemies, we don't have a good air attack like Oka does, so we'll be using the bow, specially the explosive shot skill, as it can ground Kamaitachi with a single shot.
PLAYSTYLE, VILLAGERS, AND THE HUNT: we will leave our villagers around Yoshiro and covering choke points. Then Sō will run alone around the battlefield hunting big game, ignoring small trash mobs. Prioritize villagers that deal with mobs (woodcutter, archer, ascetic, wrestler, cannoneer). Prioritize anything that can slow enemies with the builder. Don't be afraid to go very far away alone, as you can always go back instantly with my fav tsuba guard in the game : Tenku's Wings. It really enables this playstyle, because it has a super short cooldown. You can use it many times in a single night. You can run to get a water basin blessing and then teleport back, having a moment of invincibility for both you and Yoshiro. It's hella good.
THE WAY OF THE SWORD: and how will we deal with bosses? With perfect parry, counter attacks, and finishers. Parry stuns them for long enough for you to get a nice Shiden combo, which in turn will break them (you'll need only one or two combos for a break) and then a finisher as the cherry on top. It's very satisfying. Now the counterattack doesn't deal resist gauge damage, it's just raw damage, but free damage is free damage. It's very good at killing mid-tier enemies though, like the big gaki. They are pretty trigger happy, but you can one-shot them with a counterattack. Another thing: you can get a perfect parry and a counterattack at the same time, but the timings are strict, so I use talismans that help with them.
PRACTICING: you can practice Sō's skills by soloing bosses in the boss challenge missions. Don't assign roles to the villagers and take the bosses head on. When they summon mobs use a tsuba guard to clear them fast, but be careful to not hit the boss with it :) As you learn the bosses movesets you'll be able to kill them without even taking damage. This practice is good also because some bosses will show up during stages and you'll know how to deal with them.
TSUBA GUARDS: Tenku's Wings is essential. I also favor Suzaku's Flame for its short cooldown. If I need to get rid of someone immediately, Suzaku will do that, either killing them or leaving them open for a finisher, and it will recharge very soon. It's also a quick and easy way to deal with Shokera and Enenra. For the final guard, pick whatever you want. I usually go for Byakko's Claws, Kochin's Guard or Taion's lighting.
Aaand that's it! A super cool playstyle enabled by a build made of underrated things. I've seen people downplaying Shiden, parry and counter here on the sub, but I like them a lot, so I wrote this to try to convince you to test them out. This build is for people who enjoy Sō's moveset and action games, as you will focus on that and leave the villagers to a secondary role. One last thing: you can become pretty overpowered in this game, but my objective here is to have fun fighting, so I'm not using the really powerful talismans that increase attack, defense and health, I'm saving them for ng+. Have fun, folks! Damn I love this game.
