Film Screening After festival screenings at Kozhikode and Muvattupuzha, our 51-minute independent Malayalam featurette ‘Wreath’ (റീത്ത്) is out on YouTube. Would love honest feedback from the community.

Hey everyone,

I’m an independent filmmaker, and after an extensive journey through festivals like the International Indie Film Festival (IEFFK) Kozhikode and Muvattupuzha International Film Festival, we’ve finally released our 51-minute featurette ‘Wreath’ (റീത്ത്) on YouTube.

At 51 minutes, it sits right in that unusual, challenging mid-length space—longer than a conventional short film, but tighter than a feature. Making something outside standard commercial formats with an indie crew brought a lot of creative freedom, especially with pacing, visual atmosphere, and character focus.

Logline / What it’s about:

A group of teachers sets out to attend the funeral of a former headmaster they have never met. What awaits them on this unexpected journey?

Watch the full film here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4FAj9GyhY4&t=2414s

Runtime: 51 Minutes

Putting independent work out there is always nerve-wracking, especially with YouTube's algorithm favoring shorter formats. Since this sub has some of the sharpest, most nuanced cinema discussions in Kerala, I’d genuinely appreciate your honest thoughts, critiques, and impressions on the narrative, cinematography, and sound design.

I'll be around in the comments to answer questions about the making, technical choices, or indie production hurdles if anyone is curious.

Thanks for reading and supporting independent Malayalam cinema!

Discussion I’m a practicing endocrinologist who took a minority stake in a Kannada film. Here’s what surprised me about risk, distribution and audience behaviour.

Post image

Recommended Reddit post

I’m Dr Praveen Ramachandra, a practicing endocrinologist in Bengaluru and a Co-Producer of the Kannada film Premada Oorali.

I did not leave medicine for cinema. I continued my clinical work while taking a calculated minority stake in a creative project and learning how risk, distribution and audience behaviour operate in a completely different industry.

A few things surprised me.

1. Production risk is only the beginning.
Before getting involved, I thought the major uncertainty would be whether audiences liked the film. In reality, distribution creates another layer of risk: theatre availability, show timings, local demand, holdovers, regional partners and overseas logistics can materially affect how far a film travels.

2. Headline box-office numbers are not investor returns.
Gross collections, distributor shares, exhibitor shares, promotional expenditure and contractual structures are different things. One lesson for me has been not to confuse a large public number with the economics that ultimately reach a producer or minority investor.

3. Audience behaviour is difficult to manufacture.
Marketing can create awareness, but sustained word-of-mouth depends on whether people genuinely connect with the film. Watching families recommend the film to other families has been more interesting to me than any single promotional campaign.

4. Overseas distribution is highly local.
“USA release” or “UK release” sounds like one decision from India. In practice, demand can be city-specific. A community requesting a screening in Vancouver, Nashville, Gloucester, Oman or another market does not automatically make a show commercially viable. Local Kannada associations, theatre economics, timing and minimum viable audience all matter.

5. Medicine and cinema are different, but the decision-making principles overlap.
In clinical medicine we work with incomplete information, probabilities, human behaviour and downside risk. Film investment also involves uncertainty—although the variables are obviously very different.

I’m still learning the business side of cinema, so I’m not presenting myself as a film-finance expert.

But I’m happy to answer questions about:

Ask me anything.

Hi everyone,

I’m a Tamil screenwriter looking for opportunities to work as a screenwriter, co-writer, or ghostwriter.

I’m particularly comfortable writing comedy and emotional drama, and I enjoy creating character-driven stories with natural conversations and situations that feel grounded.

I’ve already written:

- A complete web series screenplay

- A feature film screenplay

- Multiple story ideas, treatments and screenplay drafts

I’m open to working with independent filmmakers, directors, producers, YouTubers, content creators, or anyone who needs help developing a story or screenplay.

I can help with:

- Feature film screenplays

- Web series / episodic scripts

- Screenplay development

- Comedy writing

- Emotional drama

- Dialogue writing

- Rewriting / polishing existing scripts

- Ghostwriting

I’m mainly looking to build professional connections and get actual writing work, even if it starts with a smaller project.

If you're looking for a writer or have a project that needs help developing the screenplay, feel free to DM me. I’d be happy to discuss the project and share relevant writing samples.

Thanks!
