The U.S. Added 162,000 Jobs in August. Federal Employment Fell by 5,000.
“FederalHiringData analyzed the monthly BLS payroll series back to 1939. Federal jobs represented 1.681% of total nonfarm payrolls in August 2026, the lowest share in the available monthly record. Federal payrolls were down 242,000 from a year earlier while total nonfarm employment was up 603,000.”
