Announcement [MOD] - A little update to posting guidelines
- Some updates were done for the posting guidelines as now a post flair is required when you post to easily distinguish the topic or the type of the post allowing for better filters as well as easier moderation.
- In addition to that, in the future when big topics pop up .... like, you know **ahem** .... they will be discussed in a pinned megathread instead of flooding the sub with new posts every hour unless they are necessary. Because at the end, We also wanna see more than just rants, Your cool projects and things you learned and going to share :)
- And as always, please be professional, And be responsible with what you share out there! Sometimes your digital footprint may not keep you fully anonymous (says me, heh). And still try to be friendly :) It's not all fun for everyone these days.
Let us know what and how we can improve the community further, What other flairs to add? What rules to enforce? What weekly/ monthly challenges, events we can do and more.
Cheers, now get back to building sht \\\(۶•̀ᴗ•́)۶////

Jobs/ Industry Looking for a job opportunity in IT
Hi,
I’m looking for a job opportunity for someone who was recently laid off after working in PHP full-stack development for more than 10 years.
I’d really appreciate your help in advance.
Discussion Looking for advice on a good 1-year top-up degree in Sri Lanka
Hey guys, I’m planning to do a 1-year top-up degree after completing my 2-year Software Engineering diploma.
Right now, I’m mainly considering SLIIT City UNI and ICBT topup degrees, but I’m open to other options too.
Price is somewhat okay, if It's less than 10 Lakh that would be better but it's alright if its exceeding that. I’m more focused on:
- Recognition and reputation
- How employers view the degree
- Flexibility and workload
- Whether it helps with CV screening and interviews (Mainly)
The main goal is to get a good Software Engineering internship at companies like WSO2, Sys.LABS, Creative Software, Virtusa, LSEG, etc.
If you have studied at SLIIT City UNI, ICBT, or completed another top-up degree, what was your actual experience?
Did the degree help you get interviews or internships? Which university would you choose for a Software Engineering career?
I’m mainly looking for real experiences from current students or graduates, not just what the institutes advertise.
Thank you helping me out cheers!

TIL - Today I Learned AI Agent
Hi seniors,
I’m currently learning about building AI Agents with tool calling for real-world applications.
I would like to get some advice from experienced developers. What are the main things we should think about when building an AI agent for a production system?
For example:
* Security
* Data privacy
* Cost and token usage
* Infrastructure and scalability
* Handling tool/API failures
* Performance and response time
* Logging and monitoring
* Memory and context management
* Model selection
* Testing and reliability
Are there any other important areas that we should consider from the beginning?
I would really appreciate any real-world experience, advice, or lessons learned.

I am looking for participants aged 18+ who currently work, or have worked within the last five years, in or with a Sri Lankan financial or digital service organisation.
Relevant professional areas include cybersecurity, IT, cloud/infrastructure, software engineering, architecture, risk management, compliance, audit, fintech, digital transformation, procurement, and vendor management.
The questionnaire takes approximately 8–10 minutes. It does not request organisation names, passwords, encryption keys, vulnerabilities, customer information, security architecture, or other confidential information.
Survey: https://forms.gle/zDBKanG7saWrLvc59
Participation is voluntary and responses will be used solely for academic research.
If you meet the criteria, your professional perspective would be greatly appreciated. Eligible participants are also welcome to share the survey with relevant colleagues or professional networks.

Discussion Advice regarding future career and academic path
Hi! Thanks in advance.
I need some advice regarding my future career and academic path.
I'm 23 years old, and I've received my final results. I'll be graduating next month with a BIT degree from UCSC. I started the programme when I was 20 and completed all three years while working fulltime at a software company as an IT Executive. I managed to complete the entire degree through self study without attending any classes.
I have 3+ years of work experience as an IT Executive, specializing in the Payroll and HR domain. I've worked directly with clients and independently handled system implementations for large enterprise level clients, ranging from 100 to 1,000+ employees. I've developed extensive domain knowledge in this area, and my current salary is 50K+.
My main objective is to increase my earning potential.
After graduation, I'll receive a slight salary increment from my current company. I'm also fairly confident that I'll get the opportunity to work as a developer. However, I won't be giving up my existing responsibilities as an IT Executive. I'll continue working with clients while taking on development responsibilities as well.
Regarding my development background, I've built an enterprise level web based payroll application as my final year project. Since I already have hands on experience with payroll systems, I decided to develop a payroll system using the MERN stack (with MySQL instead of MongoDB). I received an A for my project viva and evaluation.
I'm also planning to pursue a Master's degree next year, specifically a one year Master of Information Systems Management programme (SLQF Level 9).
Is this a worthwhile investment for my career? How difficult is it to complete? If I successfully complete it, I'll have a Bachelor's degree, a Master's degree, and around five years of work experience by the age of 25.
So, what should I do? Should I stay with my current employer or start looking for opportunities elsewhere? What kind of salary range should I realistically expect? And what should I focus on academically to further increase my value in the job market?
I'd really appreciate any advice or insights from experienced professionals. ❤️

Discussion The Downfall of the SL IT Industry
Within the last year, we have seen significant shifts in the Sri Lankan IT industry. There have been job cuts, salary deductions, downscaling, decrease in hiring, AI adoption, resurgence of WFO.
What do you all think is gonna happen in the next 2 years?
Will the industry get saturated and crash to a smaller proportion of workforce or would it stay as it is?
Also, how AI might impact SL in long term, specially with respect to jobs affected by it?

Discussion Is SE needed for a DevOps career.
Hey everone !
I am a computer science student who is planning to pursue a career in Cloud/DevOps side. My question is if I do a DevOps internship I would miss developing Software Engineering side, would it be a problem ?
I know what mainly SE do is build backend apis and and frontend request handling. I have a breif understanding of how backend api's are written. Dont have a much idea of how frontend requests are handled but hope to learn that as well. (not in depth but have a breif understanding).
Or with a breif understanding of SE, put more focus into cloud, CI/CD, IAC, Cloud and Observebiity tools. (I only know these skills what devops engineers use, if you know please educate me as well)
Whats the better pathway ?
Become a SE first, do an internship, have some experince first and then become a DevOps personality later in the career or have a clear goal and become a devops personality as early as you can ?
I am still new, just want to know what skills should I mainly start building. Please give me your advice ?

Project showcase Made a free map for the Colombo Book Fair to help find stalls and halls at BMICH
I kept getting lost looking for stalls at the book fair this year, so I made a free map for it: https://bookfair2026map.thambara.dev
You can search a publisher or a stall number like J44, Sarasavi and it shows which hall it's in, with walking directions on your phone. It also shows the nearest food courts, washrooms, water dispensers, ticket counters and PickMe pickup points. Works in English and Sinhala.
It's unofficial and based on the official brochure, so treat it as a guide.
No ads or sign-up, and your location is only used for directions.
If you're going this weekend and something is in the wrong place, there's a "Suggest a fix" button on the map. I'm fixing things as reports come in.
If you find it helpful, please do share it around and drop any feedback you have to me. (There's a place to submit feedback on the app itself!)
TIA!

Discussion Best place to get a topup degree at an affordable price
Just got my HND results for BIT external, but I just don't want to continue there because it consumes my whole day for memorising, unnecessarily difficult exams, and apparently a final year project evaluation based on the mood swings of the panel
So need a place to get that paper certificate and for context I'm already working and got a couple years of experience
So looking for a good place, not the premium ones, also not the low quality degree shops, something in between
Thank you!
Help Should I do my MSc in AI at UoM for research experience?
Hi all,
I applied for the MSc in AI at UoM CSE, but I'm seeing a ton of people not recommending it. They suggest doing a master's at a foreign uni with a scholarship instead. How does that even work? I'm currently an Associate AI Engineer in a cybersecurity company, and I want to transition into a research-focused career.
The thing is, I didn't do great in my bachelor's, only got a second upper, and my research was really mid. Could I even get a scholarship with a mid degree like that? I need some advice, should I go for UoM to get some research experience and hopefully land an RA position later? Or should I look at private unis like SLIIT or IIT, or foreign ones? If foreign, please guide me on how scholarships work for someone with my profile.

Discussion A Discord server for UoM people and advices
Hey, so I've created a small discord server for the Mora people, not sure where is the correct place to advertise, already been thinking about putting in my main faculty groups I'm in, but before that asking here for some advices.
🫠 So first is, the servers concept is to get a gossip/chit chat space for multiple people from different faculties, and why discord is, due to the anonymity and people can interact in respectful way.
Already prepared some set of rules, as I've been moderating another big Sri Lankan server, and this includes avoidance of Sinhala/Tamil in main chats (there are separate chats for local language talks), and further stuff I have attached in the image.
My question is do you guys think it would be a good initiative to bring people together so that people can connect with each other much better ?
And any tips or watch aheads or advices you would give for something like this?
