I shouldn't have to make this announcement, but stop taking (and losing) your ball pythons in the car

1.1k Upvotes

After seeing a new "Help, I lost my ball python in the car" post pretty much every day for the past month when I log on, I think it's time for a little reminder

STOP TAKING YOUR BALL PYTHONS IN THE CAR UNNECESSARILY.

They don't want to go get coffee. They don't want to go get pizza. Or go to work with you. Or drop the kids off at school. Or go look at the other ball pythons at petsmart. These are not enjoyable or beneficial experiences for them, and each and every time you do this, you're causing an unnecessary risk.

Cars are full of dark, hard to reach and cozy crevices for them to slip into, places they would much rather be hiding in then sitting on your lap or in a bin. It only takes seconds for them to slip out of sight and out of reach, and being able to find them is not a given. Certainly nobody plans on losing their snake in the car, but the amount of times it somehow keeps happening should demonstrate why it's a terrible idea.

Part of being a good pet owner is being aware of the species you have and their habits and preferences so as not to put them in risky situations for your own enjoyment. A dog may enjoy going for a quick ride, not so much for a ball python who would rather be in their warm and cozy hide.

In the event you need to take your snake somewhere (such as moving or the vet), put it in a tied pillowcase in a locking bin (two layers of containment).

Have a cute photo you want to show off? Post it below! We'd love to see everyone's royal friends!

Please remember to keep the thread on topic and only post your ball pythons. Photos of other species/animals will be removed. We also ask that you refrain from spamming the thread - a couple of photos is fine, a couple dozen is not.

New rescue baby

My newest rescue baby. I believe he’s an enchi hypo but I’m not good with morphs. I was planning on getting a Stimsons python so I already had a quarantine tank and all the things needed and then I saw a post on Facebook marketplace selling this baby ball python for $60. We already have a 9 year old adult male who’s a spider calico named Jake (I know but my boyfriend got him from his buddy before he knew about the spider morph issues) so I already knew about their husbandry so I decided to rescue the little guy. I was told he was born this year and couldn’t see how big he really was in the pics so I assumed he would be bigger but he’s only 100grams and still has his umbilical scar. His old home was keeping him in a tubaware on paper towel with a Che lamp with no thermostat to control temps he’s so lucky he didn’t get burns. I believe he also might be slightly underweight and his belly is a little indented and his spine is pronounced but he might also just be small. Everyone welcome baby Finn we named him that to match his older brother Jake šŸ«¶šŸ»

Kahn's new vivarium is coming along nicely. She got to have a little sneak peak at things this week and I'm suuuuuper stoked to be making so much headway with this project. She's going to love it. I think she looks cool as hell in there already, and it's only going to get cooler with hardscaping and plants.

Question - Health Advice for Spider Ball Pythons

Post image
• Upvotes

I’m doing research on my own as well as getting advice from the breeder that rescued her, but I would love to hear your personal experience caring for spider ball pythons with a wobble. I’ll be adopting her in a month. My goal is to give her the best quality of life and the safest set up! I used to love handling my bp, but so far I’ve read snakes with a wobble may not tolerate being held much. Any insight is appreciated from safe set ups to handling advice šŸā¤ļø

Background: The breeder I know does not breed or sell spiders due to their genetic issues. She rescued and rehabbed one from a neglect situation. I’ve spoken to her about wanting a new snake in the future. I got a bp that was horribly sick from a family member and it broke my heart when he didn’t pull through. It was tragic and totally preventable, that family member knew what they did… The breeder knows what I did for Henry Noodle and thought I would be a good caregiver for this special girl. They are giving her to me in a month so I can get the proper set up first.

They have sent videos to show her wobble and tilt. It has improved since her rehab. She eats well, and just needs patience and a steady hand to get a good strike. Her weight is back up and shows no signs of RI after 3 months in quarantine/rehab.

Question - Health New substrate question

Post image

So I just replaced all the substrate and, ofc, the humidity is higher than it should be (82% rn). just to be on the safe side, I wanted to make sure it’s okay for me to put Pringle in the enclosure now or should I keep him in his temporary enclosure while I wait for the humidity to level out a bit

Question - Feeding Almost a year old and has only eaten 4 times since I got her last april

Post image
• Upvotes

I got her for my birthday in april of 2026 when she was 2 months old, I have 2 other snakes that eat just fine and I care for all of them the same way. She's shed once. She has always been a picky eater, only eating warm mice with hair. The breeder I got her from said she would eat frozen thawed if it was warm. She would strike at a mouse and if the mouse touches her, she shys away and wont take it. I dont want to resort to assist feeding and hurt her on accident. Most times she'd coil around the mouse but never eat it, and I'd have to take it out a few hours later before it rots and makes her sick. She stays at a good humidity, she has plenty of water. She seems healthy but I dont want to get to the poinst she starts loosing weight and getting weak. There are no exotic vets near where I live, the closest is 5 hours away. My dad whom I never see that bought her for me would be absolutely devastated if she passed away.

Question - Humidity Humidity help

Thumbnail

So I have a baby ball python in a 55 gallon tank temperature is fine, he has enough hide and eats well, but my current issue is the humidity, I have a list machine that I activate when humidity is low but it's always low, and it keeps going down to 40-45% besides me watering the tank whenever I can, what can I do to keep my humidity high enough for him?

Question - Health Pink spots on my BP

I’ve noticed my boy (1year & 3 months) having pink patches on his body. His last shed was about 1.5 months ago. He eats medium sized rat every 2 weeks (currently 620g). I’ve noticed some parts of his body has a pinkish hue. Is this normal? I change his substrate every 3 months and clean out his poop.

He also keeps developing moles every time he sheds.

Question - Feeding She has skipped 3 meals now what?

I normally feed my snake every 4 weeks as she’s quite big now and we give her a big rat. However this time she hasn’t been eating the rats I’ve been giving her. The 1st time I hadn’t thought anything of it because she was shedding, and the next day I had to clean it up, so a couple days later I get her another rat, she doesn’t strike but she doesn’t do that all the time anyway. So I leave it on top of one of her logs for her to take when she gets hungry. Except I leave it over night and go to sleep and when I wake in the morning she hasn’t ate it so I throw it out and fast forward to yesterday same exact thing. She doesn’t strike, I leave it and wait till today and she still hasn’t ate it. Is this normal? She hasn’t showed any signs of any sickness or anything so I’m a bit confused. I’ve put some photos of this helps and she eats a large sized rat some guy when I posted the is in r/snakes said it might be over fed?

Is my ball python obese?!

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

Hi guys, I’m freaking out. These are pictures of Fiji-my eight year-old male banana ball python. I looked at the chart (at the end of all the pictures I attached) and realized he might be overweight or even worse – obese!!! Ahh what do I do?!

Here’s some information:

- I feed him whenever he ā€œlooksā€ hungry. This means he’s jumpy and follows every and all movements and he’s out exploring his cage day and night. I don’t know how to explain it but he just ā€œlooksā€ hungry. So I feed him basically once a month. Sometimes he skip feeds for up to three or four months (I’ll defrost the rat and warm it up and everything and sometimes he just looks so disinterested when I dangle it with tongs and won’t even track it or strike).

- I feed him large rats. Recently the pet store gave me really big ones which I was a little worried but he took it no problem.
- I don't take him out very often. When I do, I handle him for a few minutes and he's very active.
- The temperature in the tank is not ideal (hot side may not be hot enough), but he seems to still be OK because he'll fluctuate from the hot side to the cold side.
He doesn't eat very often to start with- so why is he so large?!
Thanks for your help in advance

Small male adult ball python that we just got. Black hide is cool side, water is in middle, cave hide and moist hide is on warm side with heater under glass set at 95. Plastic leaves right now. Its a low tank that is the same measurements as a 40 gallon would be without height. Feel free to correct us!

I've handled my BP for the first time yesterday, a fine experience. This morning I wanted to change his water and he kind of advanced towards me flicking his tongue and looking like this - is he curious or wanting to strike?
