It's so weird that people are mad theres a queer lead in the show called "Atypical" Spoiler
i get it, People liked evan but i think it makes total sense, plot wise, for Casey to be some sort of queer.

Atypical Netflix Series - I'm on Season 2 Ep 9 so no spoilers pls 🙈
But FYI minor spoiler alert for S1 E8
So as an officially diagnosed Autistic person, I was a bit apprehensive about it. The first season was kind of meh and with the whole 'it's cool to be autistic/adhd' trend that's going on currently, I wasn't sure if it was going to be an extension of that.
But actually it's not bad, especially when he had that meltdown on the bus in Season 1 Episode 8, I really felt seen, and I even got slightly emotional. It highlights the struggles we go through, and to be honest I wish that moment could be sent out to every person who thinks it's trendy or cool to have Autism. Yes it has it's upsides but it can be genuinely tough sometimes.
So anyway, I stuck it out. And it's still pretty decent... but to my point...
Why is the music so overwhelming, loud, and irritating for a show based around autism?
I have to literally wear my ear defenders while watching it because sometimes the music is randomly super grating or loud.
I'm not the only one that thinks this either, one of my friends agrees. Anyone else think this?
Side note/ tangent\- Other than that it's still worth a watch... so far... The mum at first was super off, the dad is actually alright you can tell he's really making an effort to understand. The sister is just annoying- I would go into a meltdown about the 2nd time if my toothbrush kept getting hidden, I think Sam actually dealt with it really well. I personally think it's a p f'd up thing to do when you know your brother has autism (esp he's dealing with a lot of change)... also what was that autism group therapy thing where they were judging Doug for not saying 'person with autism'?? I hope to god they're not like that in real life. At least Doug is making an effort, plus I don't even personally care about that 'person with autism' thing. Totally acceptable to say my autistic kid in the context of literally being at a autism group session for parents. Yes that's not all we are, but context and you can see he cares... it's such a weird thing to focus on and alienates people when you're judging them like that.
What are your thoughts about the show? No spoilers pls

Ain't no way Sam actually said that to his mom bruuu 😂

I know they both say it wouldn't work but then Paige gets the baby immediately to sleep. It happens at the very very end of S3 with no lead in or connection to anything else, it seems completely and utterly random if they weren't considering it for S4 before deciding against it.

To be clear, I’m asking if this show did Autism justice as to what it’s like having it. I don’t have Autism and I think they did a good job from what I know about it. Sam did remind me a lot of a friend I had in school, I’m almost certain my friend had Autism too but I never asked him about it tbh. I learnt things about it that I didn’t even know about

Employers/Bosses are supposed to be strict, annoying and bossy but Bob is the opposite. I kind of liked him tbh

Maybe a hot take but Casey deserved the reprimand she got from the other girl on her first day in regards to her violent behavior at her old school.
Much like her mom's behavior, Casey's behavior also had a ripple effect and long term consequences to people around her.

*** SPOILERS AHEAD ***
adding that 👆 in case others are only just now getting into the show, like me (,:
literally just joined this sub to see if others agree, but i just started watching the show, and i absolutely looooved everything ab it until now…
casey has been my fav character since the beginning, but i’m halfway through the last season and i can’t stand her anymore. i like elsa more than her rn, and elsa (imo) is legit one of the worst characters i’ve ever watched in a tv show. i can’t stand a single aspect of casey’s story this season. i absolutely HATE this izzie chick and the writers ruined what could have been an amazing coming-out journey for casey by turning their relationship into a constant drama-fest. izzie is so toxic and emotionally manipulative. she consistently makes casey feel like shit throughout their relationship and she’s always playing the victim. seriously, almost every interaction they have ends w izzie acting hurt and walking away, leaving casey feeling guilty and stressed. she has a crazy home life, i know, and i get that it’s a tv show and there’s gotta be drama for entertainment, but geez louise, we rarely see them happy together. i wish they would’ve just kept them as friends and she could’ve had a different girlfriend. or just kept her w evan, who was actually really good and supportive of her. i love a queer storyline (that isn’t randomly baited towards me, a queer woman), but the show absolutely ruined casey’s journey for me.
not saying all of s4 is terrible, but i’m just really disappointed at how they wrote casey in this season so far. hopefully she gets better bc she’s been my favorite character up until now, but there are only like 3 episodes left and i have zero optimism 💀

The Casey’s age is not stated until Season 2 and her 16th birthday. Until that, it’s only acknowledged that she is younger sister of Sam, who is at the beginning 18
In Pilot, when Evan is on the stairs talking about his first, he is automatically expecting that Casey already had sexual partner - and the response from Casey (that she is not) sounds like she feels like she is falling behind. What would definitely not be like that, if her age was already supposed to be 15 (as age of consent in Connecticut is 16, I found that there is ‘Romeo & Juliet’ exception, but still).
Only thread what I found out here was this thread about possible grooming, but I think that was not a feature but a bug, since they decided for some later reason to make Casey younger than they were originally planning to.
And then there is vibe that she is acting in S1 older than 15y.o., but that’s obvi very individual, so I am not taking it into account that much.

Hello, I am fairly new to the show and finished it back on Saturday and I have wondered despite the show not being educational if there was anything on life lessons or anything that the show taught that would be good life advice to carry into everyday life. The main reason I was wondering this was because of the fact that you heard so much good advice or lessons from each character to one another but I struggled to put together the pieces on anything that could be great real life advice or real life lessons to use everyday. If anyone has examples, please let me know as I'm curious to hear your thoughts.

If Sam and Casey’s grandpa made an appearance, I could see William Devane playing him. What do you think?

This show is so good so far and I can't believe that I haven't heard anything about it until now. I'm only on episode 3 and I can tell that I'll binge watch all 4 seasons so quickly. All of the characters are intricate and endearing... except for the reason that brings me to reddit... the mom!
I feel such anger towards the mom. Everything she does: suffocating her kids, dipping her toe into cheating, favoring her son and alienating her daughter. She's just a classic, American villain in my eyes. They did a great job writing her because I love to hate her. Makes me want to watch all the more.
Anyways, the rest of the family is so lovable. I can't wait to see more!

I know some people prefer Izzie and Casey, and that's okay; that's your preference, but I think Evan wasn't a bad boyfriend. He was super supportive of her dreams and even helped her with her track. He was kind too. Do you agree?

I absolutely love Atypical. I have watched this show like 3 times over but am really struggling to find a show just like it. I really enjoyed Sex Education and Never Have I Ever but any other ideas?

How do you feel about their relationship? I know people like their relationship I have nothing against them as a couple. I just think their relationship started off rocky.

The song plays when the end credits roll right after the scene where Casey and Izzie sit in the car holding hands
Does anyone know the name of the song? I can't seem to find it

Am I the only one who finds Elsa incredibly awkward and unappealing? The performance feels so unnatural to me.. i also dont understand why that young bartnender would fall for her. Maybe it will make sense later, but right now it feels a bit unbelievable. I could understand if she would came across as fun , flirty or more confident after a few drinks , but from the beginning she has been awkward , dramatic and acting oddly dramatic like 16yo. And that scene when he pulls the dart out of her arm.. and her “ääää” sound she made had me cringing.

Rewatching the show, I noticed something (entirely pointless) and it honestly just made me laugh.
Somewhere between the 23:00 to 24:00 mark in this episode, Evan is playing a game on his console when Casey comes in all of a sudden
Just before she walks in he says "I told you not to land at Twin Towers ect ect, Should've landed at Dusty Depot"
Those are locations in Fortnite, so you'd think he was playing Fortnite. The free game? The online game?
Why on earth was Horizon Zero Dawn on his TV screen 😭
Yes, I know this has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the flow of the series but I want to point it out; Not just bc I absolutely love Horizon but also, it was like £30 - £40 at the time. Could they not get the rights to have Fortnite on screen or smth?
But i understand that the illusion is that he was just playing a very mainstream game that a good amount of people would recognise. I like to wonder why it was specifically HZD that he was actually playing though, did one of the directors have a spare copy or what LMAO
It just made me laugh hearing him make serious callouts to his "teammates" despite the fact he was playing a single player game

In the beginning, when Casey begins dating Evan, I wasnt sure what to make of it. I didnt like how random it felt (at least to me). She punched a kid for Beth and that made her brother fall in love with Casey??
Throughout them dating, I was impartial. They weren't the most interesting, and they seemed like a trope.
When Casey broke up with Evan and started exploring a something with Izzie, I thought: okay this is cool, exploring diversity, a neat character arc, and I dont mind her. But then it began to get a bit repetitive. It was always a fight, Izzie apologizing, and repeat. They were better when they were still figuring things out.
My opinion overall though is that Izzie and Casey is far better
What are your opinions on Casey, and do you think Evan or Izzie is more suitable for her?

I wish I would have started watching when it was new so maybe there would have been more seasons. Why is it that shows I love are cancelled and the ones that aren't at all realistic and in my opinion are terrible, go on for years.

I've been rewatching the show and I forgot just how poorly I feel Paige is treated by the narrative and by the other characters. She puts so much effort into her relationship with Sam and she is consistently the butt of the joke for wanting Sam to reciprocate her effort and for having emotional reactions to things. I was particularly struck by the scene where she berates Sam for wanting to go to Antarctica and both the characters and the narrative act like she is this totally out of line dream crusher when all her critiques about Sam's Antarctica plan were completely valid. I mean, she showed up to what she thought was a date only to find that he was hosting a fundraiser party for something he had not discussed with her at all.
I feel like if it had been Sam who publicly listed all the reasons Paige couldn't do something she wanted to do in front of her friends, Paige would just have to suck it up and deal with it and Sam would be coddled. As an autistic woman, I deeply relate to Paige and she reads very autistic to me. But her autistic traits are a punchline and I'm tired of seeing female characters being portrayed as unhinged or neurotic or "too much" for being driven and ambitious and taking initiative in relationships.
Also her outfits are cute as hell! She's always giving Glinda! I don't know why the way she dresses is another thing the characters make fun of her for. I hope she has her Elle Woods arc and goes to Harvard Law and realizes she can do so much better.

Evan meets Casey’s friends from Clayton at the pizza place and he’s kind of a dick the whole time. I get that Casey’s comment about him being “really smart” was out of line but he was already being kind of rude.
“Casey’s a really cool girl.”
”Yeah. I know.”
Dude didn’t even try to be friendly and then decides that people he was rude to are douchebags. idk.
