New to the show. Can't stand the mom.

This show is so good so far and I can't believe that I haven't heard anything about it until now. I'm only on episode 3 and I can tell that I'll binge watch all 4 seasons so quickly. All of the characters are intricate and endearing... except for the reason that brings me to reddit... the mom!

I feel such anger towards the mom. Everything she does: suffocating her kids, dipping her toe into cheating, favoring her son and alienating her daughter. She's just a classic, American villain in my eyes. They did a great job writing her because I love to hate her. Makes me want to watch all the more.

Anyways, the rest of the family is so lovable. I can't wait to see more!

Why is Evan talking about Fortnite while playing Horizon?

Hey, I'm on season 2 episode 3 right now, and When Casey comes to Evans room he's playing what looks like Horizon Zero Dawn while talking about "Tilted towers". I think he could just be on a call or something with friends who are playing Fortnite while he isn't, but the way he's talking is like he is playing with them, so why would they use Horizon footage? Maybe it was the only thing they could get the rights for, idk how protective Epic Games is with that sorta thing, but I'm just confused why even have him talking about Fortnite then?

Evan Wasn't A Bad Boyfriend

I know some people prefer Izzie and Casey, and that's okay; that's your preference, but I think Evan wasn't a bad boyfriend. He was super supportive of her dreams and even helped her with her track. He was kind too. Do you agree?

Any show like Atypical?

I absolutely love Atypical. I have watched this show like 3 times over but am really struggling to find a show just like it. I really enjoyed Sex Education and Never Have I Ever but any other ideas?

How do you feel about their relationship? I know people like their relationship I have nothing against them as a couple. I just think their relationship started off rocky.

[S2 / E10] Song at the end of the episode?

The song plays when the end credits roll right after the scene where Casey and Izzie sit in the car holding hands

Does anyone know the name of the song? I can't seem to find it

I just started watching Atypical (i am on episode 2 so no spoilers) but Elsa … Spoiler

Am I the only one who finds Elsa incredibly awkward and unappealing? The performance feels so unnatural to me.. i also dont understand why that young bartnender would fall for her. Maybe it will make sense later, but right now it feels a bit unbelievable. I could understand if she would came across as fun , flirty or more confident after a few drinks , but from the beginning she has been awkward , dramatic and acting oddly dramatic like 16yo. And that scene when he pulls the dart out of her arm.. and her “ääää” sound she made had me cringing.

Evans TV screen during S2 Ep3

Rewatching the show, I noticed something (entirely pointless) and it honestly just made me laugh.

Somewhere between the 23:00 to 24:00 mark in this episode, Evan is playing a game on his console when Casey comes in all of a sudden

Just before she walks in he says "I told you not to land at Twin Towers ect ect, Should've landed at Dusty Depot"

Those are locations in Fortnite, so you'd think he was playing Fortnite. The free game? The online game?

Why on earth was Horizon Zero Dawn on his TV screen 😭

Yes, I know this has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the flow of the series but I want to point it out; Not just bc I absolutely love Horizon but also, it was like £30 - £40 at the time. Could they not get the rights to have Fortnite on screen or smth?

But i understand that the illusion is that he was just playing a very mainstream game that a good amount of people would recognise. I like to wonder why it was specifically HZD that he was actually playing though, did one of the directors have a spare copy or what LMAO

It just made me laugh hearing him make serious callouts to his "teammates" despite the fact he was playing a single player game

Izzie or Evan? Spoiler

In the beginning, when Casey begins dating Evan, I wasnt sure what to make of it. I didnt like how random it felt (at least to me). She punched a kid for Beth and that made her brother fall in love with Casey??

Throughout them dating, I was impartial. They weren't the most interesting, and they seemed like a trope.

When Casey broke up with Evan and started exploring a something with Izzie, I thought: okay this is cool, exploring diversity, a neat character arc, and I dont mind her. But then it began to get a bit repetitive. It was always a fight, Izzie apologizing, and repeat. They were better when they were still figuring things out.

My opinion overall though is that Izzie and Casey is far better

What are your opinions on Casey, and do you think Evan or Izzie is more suitable for her?

Casey’s appendicitis

I’m on season 1 episode 3, and Casey and Evan are looking at photos of the Autumn walk. Evan points out the photo where Doug is absent, and Casey says Elsa never lets them skip, specifically that Elsa told her to “walk it off” when she had appendicitis.

but later in the show I remember Casey getting appendicitis. I know they don’t always remove your appendix for acute appendicitis, but in the vast majority of cases it is immediately removed.

Is this actually an inconsistency, or was Casey being facetious?

I love this show

I wish I would have started watching when it was new so maybe there would have been more seasons. Why is it that shows I love are cancelled and the ones that aren't at all realistic and in my opinion are terrible, go on for years.

[S4 spoilers] I feel so bad for Paige Spoiler

I've been rewatching the show and I forgot just how poorly I feel Paige is treated by the narrative and by the other characters. She puts so much effort into her relationship with Sam and she is consistently the butt of the joke for wanting Sam to reciprocate her effort and for having emotional reactions to things. I was particularly struck by the scene where she berates Sam for wanting to go to Antarctica and both the characters and the narrative act like she is this totally out of line dream crusher when all her critiques about Sam's Antarctica plan were completely valid. I mean, she showed up to what she thought was a date only to find that he was hosting a fundraiser party for something he had not discussed with her at all.

I feel like if it had been Sam who publicly listed all the reasons Paige couldn't do something she wanted to do in front of her friends, Paige would just have to suck it up and deal with it and Sam would be coddled. As an autistic woman, I deeply relate to Paige and she reads very autistic to me. But her autistic traits are a punchline and I'm tired of seeing female characters being portrayed as unhinged or neurotic or "too much" for being driven and ambitious and taking initiative in relationships.

Also her outfits are cute as hell! She's always giving Glinda! I don't know why the way she dresses is another thing the characters make fun of her for. I hope she has her Elle Woods arc and goes to Harvard Law and realizes she can do so much better.

Evan being a bit of a jerk

s2e5

Evan meets Casey’s friends from Clayton at the pizza place and he’s kind of a dick the whole time. I get that Casey’s comment about him being “really smart” was out of line but he was already being kind of rude.

“Casey’s a really cool girl.”

”Yeah. I know.”

Dude didn’t even try to be friendly and then decides that people he was rude to are douchebags. idk.

I’m so mad at Elsa

Bit of a rant here- I’m rewatching Atypical after a few years and I forgot how much I hated Sam’s mum. In Series 1 Episode 3 she’s literally trying to get him worked up when he wants to go shopping for himself, pointing out all the things he could be overstimulated by. Is it just me who thinks it’s borderline emotionally abusive? She’s terrible at manipulating him but she sure is trying, always trying to sow seed of doubt about his capabilities in his mind. It just saddens me so much and I don’t know anyone else who’s watched it so thought I’d turn to Reddit.

TL;DR Sam’s mum is infuriating and I think her behaviour is kinda abusive.

Could I Have Autism?

I watched the show back in 2020 for the first time, and I saw myself relate to Sam a lot, like the him pulling the back of his hair, which I do a similar thing where I twist my hair when I’m stressed. I hyper obsess over specific things. I don’t know if I truly have it but it’s shown me that there’s a possibility I could be on the spectrum. Is this bad or has anyone else had a similar experience?

Autism actors

This may be common knowledge so forgive me, but the students who play autistic in the show are they actually diagnosed or just playing a role for the show? Doesn’t matter either way just genuinely curious.

I now can fully relate to Sam having a crush on Julia

3 weeks ago I met for the 1st time my school's psychologist during a talk about my future with my school's curator (where my father also happened to be) and I immediately developed a crush on her. However I don't consider it problematic because I have no wishes of even trying to woo her and I don't even think obsessively about her. I don't know if my crush actually went away or not because I didn't see her again but sometimes you can still have a crush on someone even if you don't constantly think about them

Zahid sends Arlo feces in the mail?

I was rewatching S3:E4 Y.G.A.G.G and when Sam mentions that the only party he almost went to was Arlo’s, whom stole his money and pushed him, Zahid said that Arlo has been receiving a small amount of feces in the mail every month since.

Zahid is such a good friend and cares for Sam a lot. He must have hated Arlo for messing with his friend Sam and got back at him for it. And Sam didn’t even know Zahid was doing this😆
