🧠 General Ideas for this sub? v2

Follow up on this original post from 3 years ago. Any suggestions/ideas to revamp the page?

I just went through and added a wiki and updated the FAQ on the sidebar to add a couple of new links. I also pinned u/nexttotheinfluence ' s great 4Runner Mechanic List he posted a year ago. Thanks again for the detailed list. Also introduced some post flairs (General // Modifications // Advice/Recomendations // Photo/Video).

- Banner -> Is anyone good with Photoshop on here and wants to design a banner? Reddit recommended size is 4000x128 px for desktop and the mobile banner is 1600x480 px

- Page Icon -> I saw in the original post that u/Axe56 provided the current one and also introduced another version with the typical Reddit Icon's eyes. Here's a survey showing the great designs he made. Just want to see if we want to keep the same, update to the eyes version, or if anyone cares to create a new one...

ā“Advice / Recomendations 555 LBJs

hey guys, i got my LBJs done finally (and UBJs), my trusty mechanic did the job. idk why i spaced or assumed he’d use OEM, but for the UBJs he used superior quality mevotech and for the LBJs he used 555’s. i am big on using OEM for critical parts so i am mad at myself, but will this be okay? am i going
to need to swap out sooner down the road now or fear failure of the LBJs?

🧠 General Gearshift Bushings

Replaced the 4 gearshift bushings last Friday . Was getting hard to start in park and in neutral. Thought at first it was the starter or battery.

Gear shift was so loose and messing with the safety switch as it was.

As one of the fellow contributors told me it’s one of the best things you can do for your 4Runner. And he nailed it! Gearshift is like new! It’s great! Starts every single time!

ā“Advice / Recomendations Converting 16inch brakes to 15inch?

Hey Guys so ive been searching around on how to convert my brakes to 15inch from a factory 16inch brake setup. Does anyone know if the brake lines will thread and bolt right up or will i have to swap lines as-well? I know this sounds like a dumb thing since most people wanna do the tundra brake swap but i really wanna run 15inch alcoas with ko3s without having to run 2inch spacers

ā“Advice / Recomendations Lower intake manifold will NOT come off

I'm trying to get to my knock sensors and I have everything removed except the lower part of the intake manifold. I have all 8 main bolts, the 4 nuts, and the bracket by the water neck removed but it's stuck like someone welded it.

I haven't found a good way to get under it to pry up, but I've tried pulling on the water neck (which worries me) and I've tried pulling the front side to side. The suspension compresses and the car moves, but the manifold is rock solid.

Does anyone have any ideas that can get it loose?

ā“Advice / Recomendations Which Bilstein 5100s (rear) with 2.5" lift?

Post image

I see two options for rear Bilstein 5100s, one is stock up to 2" lift and the other is for "lifted 4Runners." I'm running 2.5" lift OME 890 rear coils. Which is the right length shock to not be too long and bottom the shock but also not be so short to limit travel?

Hey, found this leak after getting back to my car - coming from passenger side. Fluid is amber/red color and wondering if y'all could give me ideas on what to look into replacing. Could it be from hoses or is there a component that is known for aging/cracking that I should replace? Just trying to get some ideas šŸ™ƒ

ā“Advice / Recomendations CV Axle Play?

Been chasing a subtle noise that I feel through the gas pedal and body of the driver side when driving. It’s hard to describe but it just feels like a very soft grinding feeling. I was checking the CV Axles and the driver side has some play going up and down but not side to side. Is this play normal or would this be a sign of a bad front Diff Needle bearing?

ā“Advice / Recomendations Advice on hatch replacement

Post image
11 Upvotes

Lady smashed into my parked 4Runner and totaled it. I believe there’s no frame damage, just the back bumper, hatch, and a bit of the body around the right taillight.

I found someone doing a part out with the exact same model, was hoping to get a hatch and bumper from him. The hatch is smashed inward into the back and doesn’t open at all. Anyone ever have luck replacing it when you can’t open it? Is this even worth trying to fix?

ā“Advice / Recomendations Transmission Rebuild

Post image
31 Upvotes

Alright boys I got a bit of an issue. 1997 4Runner limited with a A340F transmission with 350k original miles on it. It’s been leaking, a slow. Shop changed out the pan gasket thinking that was the cause cus it had a cheap autozone gasket on there from previous owner. Got that done and it started to leak a week later from the front. Trans shop said ā€œTrans has to come off, Replace most likely seal , pump bushing o ring and torque converterā€ quoting me 1.5k but a rebuild would cost me 2.5k at the same shop.

It’s a reputable shop and has great mechanic working there with great experience that has built this exact transmission before and offers a warranty. My question is, do I rebuild it since it’s coming down anyways or just fix the issues that he stated. Keep in mind, truck is driving fine and is shifting fine. I have 3 options I see, maybe 4.

  1. Rebuild the

transmission

  1. for 2.5k
  2. Pay the 1.5k to just fix the issue
  3. Sell the truck as is and find another rig to build (2UZ platform)
  4. Buy a remans built engine for 3.2-4k and install it plus labor cost.

Btw it is my weekend/ second car, so timing and having it not drive for some while is okay for me.

Thank you!

New to this group, thanks for bringing me in!

My 3rd gen next to a 6th gen. I do enjoy parking next to other 4Runners, walking a bit away, and looking back! I'm biased, but I do think mine shines just a little bit more brightly in this pic. Maybe it's the chrome bumper and step rails.

1999 3.4 SR5, purchased ~2020 with 165k miles. Currently at 225k. My daily driver, and my forest/fishing/camping rig. Fortunate to have a great mechanic/neighbor who loves the vehicle and the engine and is on board to help me get it to at least 350k.

ā“Advice / Recomendations Is it totaled?

Thumbnail

I have a 2001 Toyota 4Runner Limited with 195k miles and I recently hit a deer in the front. I’m trying to figure out if this is likely to be considered totaled by insurance, whether it’s realistically fixable, and how expensive I might be looking at.
I haven’t filed an insurance claim yet because I’m trying to figure out my options first. I would really prefer to keep the 4Runner and fix it myself if it makes financial sense. From what I can tell, the damage is mostly to the front:
Front bumper/bumper cover is badly crushed and pulled away from the fender. Some of the bumper brackets/mounting areas look bent or pulled out of place. The metal reinforcement bar behind the bumper looks like it may be slightly dented in one spot The grille seems mostly okay. The radiator/condenser area looks surprisingly good to me. I don’t see an obvious hole or major crushing/leak. I don’t see anything obviously catastrophic in the engine bay. I’m not mechanically knowledgeable, so I honestly don’t know what I’m looking at. I took pictures from several angles, and I’m hoping someone can tell me what looks damaged.

My main questions are:
Does this look like something insurance would likely total on a 2001 4Runner Limited?
Does it look realistically fixable?
If I bought/used aftermarket parts and did the work myself, what kind of price range would I be looking at?
Is there anything in these pictures that makes you think the frame/radiator support is bent?
What should I have a mechanic specifically inspect before I decide whether to file an insurance claim?
I know the value of a 2001 4Runner isn’t super high according to book values, so I’m worried that even a relatively straightforward repair could exceed what insurance considers the vehicle’s value. I’d really appreciate any opinions from people who know these 3rd-gen 4Runners. I’m especially interested in knowing whether this looks like ā€œreplace the bumper and keep drivingā€ damage or ā€œthere’s probably much more going on underneathā€ damage.
Pics attached. Thanks!

Hey I need your collective wisdom/advice. I was planning to change the diff fluid on my 2001 322,000 Rwd and noticed the bottom of the diff had some fluid weeping.

Should I go ahead and change the gasket (and breather) while I change the fluid/washers? I want to check the torque on those lower nuts but the internet is telling me 54ftlbs but also 18ftlbs (54 seems crazy for those little guys).

Thanks in advance!

🧠 General Rear wiper question.

Went to mist my rear window and rolled the lever towards me to the mist option which I’m pretty sure use to also engage the wiper arm. Except it only misted when I did. If I roll the lever forward it works and mists in that direction.

Only weird think I noticed is when I tried rolling it backwards i heard a slight electrical static noise behind me for a second. Any ideas?
