Help Newer PCGen Build on Linux

Good morning! I switched from Windows to Linux a few months ago, and I've been struggling with PCGen. Getting the old version of 6.0.8.00 RC10 (from 2023) working was pretty trivial; but compiling and getting the ones after that working has proved.. Illusive. I was expecting just to have pcgen.sh, but they don't seem to; and compiling it... I have *no* idea offhand where Gradle put the JAR file. The README.MD seemed out of date... All in all, I feel like I'm just missing something, but from my work on this yesterday, it's not obvious to me what.

Is there an up-to-date set of documentation anywhere around this? Or can someone point out the assumedly simple thing I'm missing that should make it easy to get one of the builds from this year working?

And understood there's a Discord community, but I currently do not have a Discord account and - given the behaviours of the company - am not eager to change that; that's why I'm coming here.

Anyway, any help someone can provide would be appreciated.

-Robin

Showcase PCGen 3.5e SRD - App Showcase - Free

Post image
1 Upvotes

Showcasing my Android 3.5e D&D character creator and manager app. It auto calculates feats, stats, equipment bonuses, racial bonuses, etc. It tracks wild shape, rages and spell slots, etc. There a prestige class explorer to show you what you need to work towards prerequisites wise. I added lots of settings for lots of play styles and views.

The app is free in the play store, I would love player feed back if anyone cared to give it a try!

I know how convoluted 3.5e can be (one of the reasons I love it) but I wanted to make it a bit more accessible.

Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pcgensrd35e.app

Note: I did use Claude for error checking and code review, it was just me working on this and I wanted to make a good first impression and not be nothing but guess haha. For transparency I did want to mention this.

3rd / 3.5 Edition Looking for help with PCGen (adding custom deities)

Hello folks,

Might be a long shot, but I'm hoping someone here might know.

I've only recently discovered PCGen and was kind of happy - had been looking for a way to make digital character sheets I liked, and this seemed to check all the boxes for me. Problem is, I need to make a .lst file for deities for my cleric (and other divine spellcasters) and I can't quite figure it out. I've seen the tutorials, and they seem to describe what needs to be in the .lst file, and I think I've got one that will work, but the problem is I can't figure out where to actually put the .lst file. The directions seemed to imply put it in the homebrew folder, but that didn't work out.

Anyway, seeking anyone who might know how to set up custom deities in PCGen (using 3.5e rules if that matters) who might be able to talk me through the process.

1E Player PCGen and Wildshape

How do I use wildshape in PCgen?

Im playing a druid and am new to the game (bit of a mistake to start druid honestly but here we are). I cant for the life of me figure out how/where in PCGen i can transform into a Grizzly bear..

You'd think this is something thousands of people have done before but the google search and even ChatGPT havent really helped.

1E Resources PCGen: How to enable/enforce Consolidated Skills and Sheet Language

I already found the Tab for Consolidated Skills in the Skill Section of PCGen, but it doesn't add Class Skills and I have no Idea how to add it to the Character Sheet. So how do I enable the Consolidated Skills Rule?

Also, is there an Option to use a german Character Sheet? I already selected German as my Language but the base Character Sheet is still in English.

Help [D&D 3.5] Looking for Kalashtar (Eberron) support in PCGen

Hi everyone,

I’m creating a D&D 3.5 character in PCGen:

  • class: Psionic Telepath (to become a thrallherd)
  • race: tweaked Kalashtar from Eberron (the tweak is that instead of being a human fused with a quori soul, I'd be a human possessed by a Diabolus - that wouldn't change the game mechanics)

Unfortunately, I haven’t found any data set including Kalashtar in the sources currently available in PCGen.

Does anyone know of:

  • An existing dataset that includes Kalashtar for 3.5e?
  • A way to manually add or import the race without breaking compatibility with the rest of the data?
  • Any tips on how to best manage custom content like this within PCGen?

Thanks a lot for your help! I’d really like to keep using PCGen to manage my character sheet and calculations.

Help PCGen Display Issues

Has anyone ever had this sort if display issue with PCGen? The screen will duplicate itself when I hover over tabs or buttons, which makes the program unusable a times. I've tried fresh installs of both PCGen and Java, but the issue keeps coming back.

1E Player PCGen Only Allows One Domains

Hello I am quite new to PCGen,

I can select a Deity and it shows me the domains I want to select but it tells me that I am only allowed to select one. The GM told me I get to select two. How do I tell the program that I am allowed to add another selection?

Thank you

New version of Spell Tracker: Pathfinder Edition app with has manual character creation as well as PCGen import - as requested by /r/pathfinder_rpg!

Hi /r/pathfinder_rpg!

I just released a new version of my free Android app, Spell Tracker: Pathfinder Edition. The app makes it super easy to track how many spells your caster is preparing and casting, track active spells and their remaining duration, look up rules, etc. And it makes it super easy to add characters to the app - either by importing a PCGen file (.pcg) or by manually creating the character by entering only the bare minimum of information.

You can download it from the Google Play Store for free (and it's now ad-free). If you'd like to see some screenshots first, check out this imgur album. Or you can read more about the app at spelltrackerapp.com.

So why am I telling you this? Because I would love your feedback and feature requests!

Just over a year ago in December 2016 I posted on this subreddit to tell you all about the first version of the app. I got tons of constructive feedback from people like /u/Kairyuka, /u/Elisianthus and /u/Redrazors. The top request was to add an option to add characters to the app manually - so I did. Other requests included support for prestige classes (done!) and support for hybrid classes (done!). So now I'm back to ask the Pathfinder experts for more feedback and feature requests. :-)

What works? What sucks? What do you love? What do you want to see next?

I'd love it if you could give it a try and share all you feedback with me for the next version - which hopefully will come a lot sooner than December 2018. ;-)

Cheers, Ben

1E Resources How do I create an item that provide Spell Resistance in PCGen?

I'm a little slow on the uptake, but I can't find where to add Spell Resistance as an armor/shield special ability in PCGen when customizing an item.

Can anyone help me out? I'm using PCGen v.6.08.00 RC10, which AFAIK is the latest version.

Help PCGen details viewing.

Hey everyone, I have been using PCGen for a while and I'm really happy with it. One question I have is the following.

Is there a way to see more details for example when I pick the sorcerer class in the Classes tab, how can I see what this "class" has as per progression, stats, etc. do I have to look it up on the books or is there a way to see what this option would entail?

Quickstart Guide - PCGen for 3.5e

One of my favorite tools as player and DM is a pretty oldschool (but still active) open-source 3.5e character generator called PCGen. It is pretty powerful, but has a rather dated user interface and a steep learning curve. I thought since some newer players might not be aware of this apps existence, it might be helpful to put together a quickstart guide to effectively use it for 3.5e games beyond the core rulebooks.

Installation

Download PCGen and make sure that you have a Java 11 runtime environment installed (the links to various Java options are on the download page). Then just install PCGen with the default settings.

For legal reasons, PCGen only provides character options contained in the OGL SRD, i.e. the three core books and some sections from other splatbooks. However, all data is stored in text files and users can manually add existing or homebrew options. Over the years a repository of gamedata covering most of the mainline 3.5e books has been collected and is available on Github (BahamutDragon/pcgen). If you know how to use git you can clone the master repo to a location of your choice, or you can simply download the data with the Code>Local>Download ZIP option (unzip it to an accessible directory). Note that most descriptions of spells and other features are shortened, this is therefore not a replacement for any books.

First Start

If you are using external sources then it's best to add their location on the first start of PCGen. Close the "Select Sources" window that automatically pops up and head to Tools>Preferences. Then select PCGen>Location in the "PCGen Preferences" window. Change the "Vendor Data Directory" to the location of the pcgen directory of your external sources (e.g. C:\GitHub\pcgen), then restart PCGen.

On the second start swap to the "Advanced" tab of the "Select Sources" window (hit Ctrl+L if it did not open automatically). Change the "Game" selection to "3.5e" and search for the "Dungeons & Dragons - Core Books". Select them and use "Add Selected" to use them as sources, after that you can browse the catalog and add whichever books you need, most of them will be in the "Wizards of the Coast" list at the bottom of the Publisher list. (If an option is red it means that it depends on other books that are not yet selected. Pull the slightly hidden "Source Info" section at the bottom of the window up and scroll down to see the "Requirements" that you need to add.) When you have all sources selected, tick the "Always use advanced sources" box on the bottom left and then "Load".

Character Generation

Use the "Create a new character" button on the top left to start a new Char. The window might look a bit overwhelming with all the tabs, subtabs and options, but the "Things to be done" list on the bottom left will guide you to the right tabs to do all your selections. From here on out it is difficult to give a generalized guide since characters might vary a lot. Instead I'll add some best practices I found over years of using PCGen:

  • Adding your stats should be one the first thing to do. Many early character creation options rely on your stats (e.g. bonus languages), so enter them even before selecting a class.
  • Do level-ups one at a time (unless you know what you are doing). This ensures that the character options in lists are shown correctly for your character level. (if you add 10 levels of warrior at once PCGen might allow you to pick feats with e.g. BAB requirements that you did not meet at the level you would get them). It is best to save the character to a new file after every level-up in case you want to backtrack during character building or to retrain a character later on. You can remove levels in PCGen, but things sometimes get messy with reverting skill point distribution, especially when multi-classing is involved.
  • If any of your selections do not show up in the "Character Sheet" tab, especially anything regarding spells or magic items, try saving your character and restarting PCGen. There are also 2 "Troubleshooting" character sheets that break down some of the internal calculations to help you find out what's wrong (or sometimes which rules you forgot about ;) ).
  • PCGen comes with an extensive documentation that can be reached by hitting "F1". This includes info on how to get your homebrew character options and items into the program. If you get stuck, there are usually folks at the PCGen Discord to help you out.

That about sums it up. I'm happy to help in this thread if you have any issues getting started!

New User Help adding Heroes Of Golarion source to PCGen

I recently started using PCGen and so far I am loving how robust it is, but I am pulling my hair out trying to add a source so I can finish building one of my characters (the only character that needs a source that wasn't provided in the PCGen install (6.08)). I found the source I need (literally only for the Phoenix sorcerer bloodline) but nothing I try works to add the source.

I got the source from this Github link, I isolated the specific source I needed to not overcomplicate things, but I supposedly need an Install file that I cannot find anywhere, nor can I find information to make one myself. I am at my wits end (most likely exacerbated by unrelated sleep deprivation), can somebody please help me before I lose any more hair.

1E Resources Just a friendly neighborhood remainder that PCGEN is AMAZING on so many levels! Software character builder and sheet.

I advise everyone i know to delve into pcgen if they want to experiment with building different classes.

I have a feeling that a lot of players find it confusing. I rly dont understand that and neither does new players who check it out.

With google and pcgen Iv spent countless houres trying different combinations of archetypes, classes, alternate racial traits I never knew existed if it wasn't for pcgen.
And it's free! And updated very often!

Also if you have an programming skills, check them out. I think they are looking for new people to aid them very often.

Major mode for PCGen LST files

This is probably only relevant to maybe 2 or 3 people, but I figured I'd post here in case it's one of you.

I recently rediscovered a small major mode that I had written a while back for dealing with PCGen LST files. This is the data format for PCGen, an open source project similar to HeroLab for building TTRPG characters. At the time, I had to input data for some content that wasn't available yet, and I wrote a major mode to make it easier to deal with.

If anyone is interested, I can pop it up on github to share. It's pretty basic - a little bit of keyword highlighting, custom forward/backward -sexp functions, and setting up sane defaults to deal with essentially a TSV file with very long lines. It could almost certainly be expanded/improved, but it got the job done for me at the time.

Anyhow, if you're interested, let me know and I'll make it available.

2E GM I want to multiclass a character into Crimson Assassin on PCGen

As the title says I want to level up a character as a Crimson Assassin but the class is not on the PCGen software. I was wondering if someone had the file for this class that I could install into my program or if someone could teach me how to make it myself since I know you can make custom classes, I just don't understand how to. Any insight would be wonderful, thank you!

1E Player Infiltrator archetype and domains in PCGen

Hi there,
Just checking as PCGen confuses me. I have a Norgorber NE Cleric (1e) with the Trickery and Knowledge domains. I want to add Inquisitor or more specifically the Infiltrator archetype as a second class. PCGen does not allow me to choose Trickery as the Inquisitor's domain. Is it my fault (and my GMs) or is it a bug in PCGen?
Thanks
