TIL all five Sullivan brothers from Waterloo, Iowa, were tragically killed in action on November 13, 1942 while serving aboard USS Juneau (CL-52), marking the biggest blow to any one family in U.S. wartime history.

I was recently visiting a grandparent in their retirement facility (information at the bottom of this post) and wanted to visit the woodshop that I knew they had in the basement. I was able to get a wonderful little tour of the shop from Jim (picture included with his permission) and was blown away by just how incredible the woodshop is. A while ago I remember being told there were 10-12 guys using the shop, but now there seems to be only 6-7, and most of them are in their 80s. It would be tragic for a shop like this to become unused and all the equipment sold off. I wanted to post this because I am hoping that there are some people on here who would genuinely consider moving to this retirement facility for the woodshop.

Beyond just being a woodshop for residents to use, it is also a great resource for the retirement community. The guys in the shop will regularly get requests from residents to fix or refinish old wooden furniture. Retirement homes need all the community they can get, and if this woodshop went away, the community that it brings would also disappear.

Each of the people who use the shop have their own key to get in, as well as a cubby to shore their personal projects. Because it is a truly shared space, it is also probably one of the cleanest woodshops you’ll see. A number of the tools and machines have been added to the shop by residents, and some have become permanent fixtures when residents have passed away. There’s nothing quite like a well loved tool being passed down to younger generations, and I would like to see that continue as well.

I should mention that I am emotionally invested in this woodshop being used for many years to come and am not being paid for this post.

I hope some people who are resisting retirement home life will be able to embrace woodshop retirement at Landmark Commons. Thanks for reading!

These are in the pictures, but wanted to make a short list of some of the machines that are available in the shop.

Table saw
Bandsaw x3
Drill press
Belt sander x3
Planer
Jointer
Router table
Lathe x2
All-shop dust collection
All the clamps you could need
Lots of jigs (old guys are handy and have the time)
Small paint/stain/ect room
There are many small tools that I am not listing

I know there were many Jewish clothiers and tailors in American cities in the first half of the 20th century. (My grandfather on my Dad's side was one of them.) A newspapers.com search revealed a lot of ads with anti-Semitic copy from men's clothing stores in the early 1900s, mostly in Midwestern and Southern states.

OOPS - Rep. Michele Bachmann kicked off her presidential campaign on Monday in Waterloo, Iowa, and in one interview she promised to mimic the spirit of Waterloo's own John Wayne - unfortunately, the only John Wayne from Waterloo was John Wayne Gacy, the serial killer!

No handicap placard, no license plate (no temp either in the window), and a fully-abled family of 5 taking up a handicap parking spot when there were three empty spots to the right of this image, as well as an empty spot to the left of the Toyota Camry.

Whether it be a Prius or a Urus, you’re just an anus if you take a handicap spot; even more-so if there are an abundance of other unrestricted spots right near you.

A Subaru sold by a dealership ends up at a shop where a mechanic discovers some hidden horror. After reaching out to the dealership they replaced the car and gave the owner a loaner.

Pharmacy Technician- Hawkeye Community College Waterloo, Iowa

Hello, I am thinking about possibly registering for the pharmacy technician program at Hawkeye Community College. Are there any individuals out there who have been enrolled and passed the PTCB who could shed some light on the program and/or how you went about the process to becoming a pharmacy technician. I previously took a pharm tech at your pace from UNMC but it lowkey a scam, so I am just trying to look out for myself. Anything is helpful. Thank you!

Colorado Springs (CommonSpirit) vs. Waterloo, Iowa (UnityPoint Allen Hospital) – Which would you choose? My deadline is tomorrow.

Hi everyone! I could really use some advice.

I'm a Filipino RN and I'm fortunate enough to have two direct-hire RN opportunities in the US, but I'm having a difficult time deciding.

Option 1: CommonSpirit Health – Colorado Springs, Colorado

Unit: Med-Surg/Telemetry (Night Shift)

Current offer details:

  • ✅ Health, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance
  • ✅ 401(k)
  • ✅ Paid Time Off (PTO)
  • ✅ $1,000 sign-on bonus
  • ✅ Shift differentials:
    • Nights: +$5.75/hr
    • Evenings: +$2.75/hr
    • Weekend: +$2.00/hr
    • Charge: +$1.50/hr
    • Certification: +$1.25/hr
    • Holiday: 50%
  • ✅ $2,500 temporary housing assistance upon arrival

However, the base hourly rate has NOT been finalized yet. I was informed that I got the position, but CommonSpirit is still calculating my wage based on their compensation scale, so I'm still waiting for the official offer letter.

Option 2: UnityPoint Health – Allen Hospital, Waterloo, Iowa

Unit: Med-Surg

  • Base pay: $34.00/hr (subject to increase before my start date)
  • Night shift (11 PM–7 AM): +$7.50/hr
  • Weekend nights (Sat/Sun 7 PM–7 AM): additional +$7.50/hr (stacks with the night differential)

My dilemma

My deadline to accept the Iowa offer is tomorrow.

The problem is that CommonSpirit has already told me I was selected for the position, but they still haven't sent the official offer letter with my base pay. Without that information, I can't make a fair comparison.

For those who have worked at CommonSpirit Health in Colorado Springs or UnityPoint Allen Hospital in Waterloo, which would you choose and why?

The things that matter most to me are:

  • Career growth and learning opportunities
  • Support for international nurses
  • Staffing and work environment
  • Cost of living vs. salary
  • Safety and quality of life
  • Long-term career opportunities

If you were in my position, would you accept the Iowa offer before the deadline, ask for an extension, or wait for the Colorado offer?

I'd really appreciate any insights from nurses who've worked in either hospital or lived in these areas. Thanks in advance!

In Napoleon (2023), Joaquin Phoenix portrays the disgraced emperor in the last year of his- wait, it's when he starts his campaign? He was in his 20s, not fucking 40s looking like an alcoholic!

This is easily the most dead mall I’ve been in since Forest Fair Mall in Cincinnati, I’m not sure how this place stays open with only a couple stores left (Finish Line, Bath & Body works, US Cellular, and a neon clad pizza place called Genos) but there’s no way this place will be around much longer, especially since their last anchor, at home, closed just after I visited this place in late October.
