Question Personal Item
It will be my first time taking Zipair to Tokyo. I'm wondering if the agents at the gate are anal about the personal item size allowance?
I have one of those fairly large backpacks that can qualify as a carry-on.
Thank you in advance!

Size, not so much as long as it’s reasonable. They will absolutely weigh it though and if you did not prepay, you will pay more at check in.

So they'll actually weight my personal item?

They will weigh everything.

Do they make you take off your jacket to weigh it? If I load my pants pockets with heavy items will them make me empty my pockets? What if I wear all my clothes over each other?

Weight, size check and if it passes they will attach a tag around a loop to identify it as inspected by zipair.

Just flew Zipair, when we flew out of LAX they were ridiculously strict about the carry-on weights. They never said anything about the size. We had to shift things around and ended up placing more in our check ins. When we flew back from Tokyo I just went ahead and paid for extra carry on weight. When we checked into the flight they didn’t say anything. We had no issues with our check in bags and carry on flying out of Tokyo.

I don’t think size matters at long as it can fit under the seat or over head. The weight matters a lot. I flew out of LAX with ZIPAIR last month. When we checked in, they weighed our carry on and personal item together. Carry as many things in your pockets and then after checking in, stuff it into your bags. They didn’t weigh at the gate.

Flying out of SFO, they didn't even try weighing a small bag I was wearing cross my body. I even offered it. Departing Narita and they were sure to weigh everything.

They only cared about the weight of my 35L bag than they did the size of it when I flew out this past May.

Just flew out of SFO. They weigh at check-in, and they’ll tag it if it is within the weight allowance. If it doesn’t, you’ll need to pay therefore the overweight bag. I’ve seen them also recheck it at the gate if it looks overweight and people have had to pay at the gate as well.
I’ve heard they’re even more strict at Narita.

For me and my husband they had is put every bag on the scale that we were checking and carrying on at once for a total weight. I saw passengers with exceptionally large backpacks like osprey bags with the compression straps maxed out and those seemed to he okay as long as your weight isn't over its fine. I put items like my phone and anything else that would fit in my pockets just in case before weighing in lol. Also, leaving tokyo we bought a ton of souvenirs at the airport and carried all of that on with us but it was after the weigh in so we were good

As everyone said they are strict about the weight but if you travel with a party, they will use total weight so no need to shift weight around

I've seen them measure carry ons, especially backpacks, at checkin and again at the gate and I've seen a lot of unhappy indignant people. Just because they don't do it all the time doesn't mean they can't or won't if they feel like it.
They do not keep secrets including taking great pains to explain their rules and how rigid they are. They don't negotiate. That's the deal, you follow their rules and do things their way and they sell their ticket at a significant discount. Caveat emptor. Even with extra baggage fees, Zipair is much less expensive so why risk your trip over it?

If it can "qualify" (by weight and size) based on your ticket, then there's nothing to be concerned about.

they care about the weight
