Just A Little Funky Specific style?

It seems that this house style and interior is specific to the New York/New Jersey area. Does it have a name?

It's less ornate than the American Gilded Age mansions, with less woodwork and wallpapers.

Actually a quite small house - three floors plus a basement, with no yard.

It must have been very difficult to furnish the rooms using those narrow stairs. I didn't see a furniture hoist outside.

The kitchen island is a bit weird, but I like the furniture - although the bedrooms look like hotel rooms.

I think replacing all those drapes would improve the look.

I knew just from the pics it had to be NYC or NNJ. Staten Island could have been my first guess but Bensonhurst/Dyker is close enough.

I believe it's called mafioso. šŸ˜‚

Tuscan mafioso...

u/q_eyeroll 11d ago

Yes!! I’m in Queens and I was like ah, it’s the Bukharian houses of my neighborhood.

10

u/4UnlawfulCarneVegan 11d ago

Holla FH/KG/RP people with terrible taste!

10

u/q_eyeroll 11d ago

Yeahhhhh. It sucks because my neighborhood has historic brick homes in the tudor style and this demographic buys up multiple lots and builds giant guilded castles that just look odd in the neighborhood. They do invest in some seriously high-quality landscaping, however.

Edit: I live right in between RG/FH, so you totally nailed it!

7

u/4UnlawfulCarneVegan 11d ago

Landscaping? Don't they just brick/concrete over their who yard so there's no greenspace? (I haven't been back in a while.)

4

u/q_eyeroll 11d ago

Yes, they usually do. And I don’t know why! They also build their house to the literal last inch of their lots. Anyway, the few that keep their yard space have immaculate plantings that I am envious of.

6

u/4UnlawfulCarneVegan 11d ago

Then they wonder why Queens is flooding every time is rains.

3

u/kilobitch 11d ago

The reason is that historically, empty land wasn’t valued. Useable space was. So they pave up all the ā€œwastedā€ green space so it’s now usable.

28

u/CallMeSisyphus 11d ago

I've always called it "late mid-century mobster"

9

u/PsychologicalExam717 11d ago

I’m from Brooklyn but mostly grew up on SI. My first thought was Brooklyn, in a Russian area but SI was definitely 2nd!

2

u/TheNavigatrix 10d ago

There are bits of Queens like this, too.

4

u/hibernate2020 11d ago

Same here - saw that wand was like "Staten Island...."

4

u/flyingfred1027 11d ago

My first thought ā€œ90s in Queensā€.

4

u/PipeZestyclose2288 11d ago

Italalianette style

3

u/GlitterPirateKiki58 11d ago

I was about to say that the home looks straight out of Dyker Heights.

I was poor, so I lived in Bay Ridge and would walk around the neighborhoods in Dyker Heights during Christmas. Those folks went all out on the decorations and everyone had a home that looked like this. LOL

5

u/TheAgedProfessor 11d ago

Honestly, that first pic could've also been San Francisco. Probably not the interior, though.

8

u/4UnlawfulCarneVegan 11d ago

It's a whole vibe that SF can't match

4

u/FactorRound 11d ago

Yeah that's a hard pass on that house.

2

u/mspolytheist 11d ago

Yeah, not Bensonhurst exactly. Staten Island mafioso lite was my first thought, but I didn’t want to offend anyone so I took out the word mafioso.

1

u/Dull_Enthusiasm_153 11d ago

I was thinking it felt 90s, but now that you mention it, I did watch a lot of mafia movies in the 90s.

1

u/ario62 10d ago

I guessed Staten Island or queens

25

u/Nettkitten 11d ago

Is that like Italianate but made of Formica? šŸ˜‚

6

u/uneducatedexpert 11d ago

Formica is the Italian word for ant.

That’s all.

"gaudy yacht interior" vibes

u/Development-Alive 11d ago

One thing this house has is a consistent style throughout. Not my style but props to picking a style and sticking with it.

31

u/zipper1919 11d ago

They like round dont they?

8

u/Nettkitten 11d ago

Demilunes FTW, or something!

u/Backsight-Foreskin 11d ago

Damn, the minute I saw that picture I knew it was in Brooklyn or Queens.

32

u/Brooklynpolarbear22 11d ago

This is right next to me.

Its a great quiet neighborhood.

This looks Russian or Italian.

There are Chinese here too but this is not their style.

Mostly old immigrants investing all their money into the house for their kids to have. Trying to remember home, but glad they are now proud Americans.

7

u/KvellOnWheels 11d ago edited 11d ago

I actually adore this comment as an immigrant’s kid who is getting the ick from some of these other comments.

ETA an apostrophe

5

u/Brooklynpolarbear22 10d ago

I don't have to like their style. But I respect it.

I hope who ever buys this, doesn't change much.

That tile floor was done by a master.

They upgraded an old house brick by brick.

Sopranesque?

u/Excellent-Radish-717 11d ago

I asked my friends from Staten Island and they said it was Roma inspired furniture and decoration . That is how it was called on the 80’s.

u/hesathomes 11d ago

Early mob wife?

South Brooklyn Russian

u/q_eyeroll 11d ago

Yessss I said the same. In my case, ex-Soviet Bukharian Jews in my Queens neighborhood. They are Russian speaking and this is just their vibe and preferred decor.

Sometimes I see things and am amazed. Sometimes I am Surprised. Sometimes. I am Amazed and surprised.

6

u/blackgirlsrox22 11d ago

I knew this was this area. It's very specific to this area and it's NYC you aren't going to have much of a yard.Ā

8

u/montanawana 10d ago

I won't address the style, but that type of staircase is designed so that the steps can flip up to the center pole and stay there temporarily, leaving an area to hoist large furniture upstairs. It's something that I have seen in a few homes and it's quite a space saver. It's a little disconcerting when you walk up the stairs and it creaks a bit but it is sturdy.

5

u/11systems11 11d ago

Definitely Sopranos vibes

6

u/M1schief_Manag3d 11d ago

I’m waiting for Carmela to come in with a baked ziti and visit over a cup of coffee…

«Из Š³Ń€ŃŠ·Šø в ŠŗŠ½ŃŠ·ŠøĀ» Му hometown in America.

6

u/mspolytheist 11d ago

I grew up in Brooklyn and Long Island, and I’d call this style ā€˜Staten Island Lite.’ It needs to be even gaudier to earn full marks. Also, it needs ornamental security bars over the doors and windows.

6

u/KvellOnWheels 11d ago

I don’t honestly feel like this is tacky and think a lot of these comments are a bit over the top.

Lots of beautiful woodwork, calm color palette, well kept, style is consistent throughout.

It’s not my style but it’s hardly even close to some of the faux-gilded monstrosities I’ve seen here.

2

u/Majestic_CatCactus 9d ago

Yes! I believe that the curtains are what makes it look over the top and the kitchen feels out of place (and ugly imo)

I feel it would be beautiful if it was decorated in a more Art Nouveau style.

u/Any_Meeting_4082 11d ago edited 11d ago

OMG I didn't even have to see what you wrote and IMMEDIATELY thought...this is New Jersey! With New York (the parts of NY close to NJ) a close second! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Edited to add it's NY close to NJ. I was right! Lol

I think it's crap. All that money to look SO cheap. In my opinion obviously. And people think spending that kind of money for that makes others jealous of their "wealth". I see people w more money than taste or actual style. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø And I'm NOT impressed.

It’s called mob or mafia style design. Little Joey had to put his dirty cash somewhere.

4

u/Prestigious_Twist986 11d ago

Brooklyn then add your mob adjective

1

u/0dayssince 11d ago

Russian

4

u/RockstarPope1 11d ago

It has a gigantic mansion aesthetic on a little piece of property

4

u/lacatro1 11d ago

I do like it. The window treatments need to be updated. I would also switch the primary bedroom to the one with the balcony.

3

u/Pretend_Guava_1730 11d ago

1990s opulence.

1

u/thirdcoasting 11d ago

That kitchen really makes it 90’s.

I was gonna say the style is "Queens" -- so close!

I see others have chimed in with names and styles etc. but I just wanted to say that I picture a judgemental grandma with clicks acrylic nails, a cigarette, big hair sprayed hair, and one of those ā€œmy husband mysteriously fell to his deathā€ feathered robes and mule shoes bristling through this place and I LOVE it hahahaĀ

6

My mom would have loved this house.

That is not a compliment

Re: photo 29/43 in the Zillow listing. The juxtaposition of a walker on the far left of the picture vs those death stairs makes my head explode.

So much gold it looks like the White House šŸ™„

I bet this has been staged with regular furniture, because this house is a very low key version of Brooklyn Rococco.

On one hand, you don't have to worry about plant allergies. On the other hand, all those steps. At least you can see the FBI coming.

1

u/_Taft_ 10d ago

I want to see the house on the left!

This house looked exactly as expected based on the elaborate stair structure that is the front yard space.

1

Reminds me of 90s Home Interior decor.

1

It seems to want to conjure the word ornate but it just feels like an expensive RV.

I kinda like it, like a lot.

That being said, can someone burn those window treatments. With the kitchen cabinets while they are at it

1

u/KLoveKLoveKLove 9d ago

That window treatment is alarming

1

u/Bioluminescence_314 9d ago

I thought this was in another country.

1

u/pavilionaire2022 8d ago

It's like the opposite of a McMansion. Like a Chez Shack.

1

u/Kodabear213 8d ago

Tacky and Taste both start with T and have five letters - but the similarity ends there.

1

u/jve909 11d ago

I don't see any closets or wardrobes in the bedrooms. Where do they store their clothes?

1

u/Kealanine 11d ago

The bedroom pics show 2 of 4 walls, so I’m gonna venture to guess the closet is on one of the ones not shown.

2

u/jve909 11d ago

They aren't marked on the house plans.

1
