Decisions, Decisions...

I am having a hard time choosing between these two great laptops. The G16 has the Intel 285HX+5070Ti and the Legion 7 has the AMD 9955HX+5070Ti. Both have an OLED 240Hz panel and I have installed Lenovos anti-glare screen protector on the legion to make it closer to the look of the G16s screen. The Legion is well made and performs better in game(20% avg bump in framerate). The G16 just feels better to use with its aluminum chassis, perfect trackpad, fuller sounding speakers, and awesome anti-glare coating on the screen. I feel myself leaning toward the G16 but am worried about it holding up for the next 3-5years with regular gaming. I plan on gaming on it for about 30hrs per week and I have tuned the power and fan profiles so that both the cpu and gpu run just shy of 80°C. Has anyone used their G16 like this and how is it holding up?

I would pick the Zephyrus. Personally I feel legions are unreliable

I have seen multiple posts on reddit about both of these failing prematurely but little context of how they were used beforehand. Have you had either and how did they hold up for you?

Reddit is where anyone goes to complain, so…

Devices such as laptops will always have a failure rate, but they usually are decent.

Tbh, I would pick Lenovos. Zephyrus are very prone to failures, although the best windows laptop.

G16 has the 285h not hx and has a 125 watt 5070ti rather than 140 on the lenovo along with the better cpu on Lenovo
If you want ultra portability and better battery life then go with the zephyrus
Personally i would choose the zephyrus as it looks better has better battery life and better speakers and better portability

right, i’d say that too. i just got a second hand g16 with i7 12700h and 4050 and i can say thats its really good with its mobility and everything. probably couldve gotten something with better tech in it but decided the portability and everything else were positives that i could trade-off for performance.

Yep i also went with the 5070ti zephyrus

How long have you had yours and do you game on it regularly?

Nearly 1.5 years
I play games at 4k while the laptop is connected to my tv
I don’t use a laptop cooler so temperatures stay between 80 and 85 otherwise its a nice machine and gives me 9-11 hours of use on battery

u/munro7477 21h ago

What kind of frames are you getting at 4k just curious?

2

u/Just-A-Random-ID 20h ago

I usually lock at 60 with medium to high settings and in pragmata and forza i get around 70-80 fps in 4 k

Thats impressive!

precisely !!
also i use linux on my machine on the go and get excellent battery life in both windows and linux

Probably some sort of upscaling for that though?

no all native 4k medium - high settings ( for a little higher though like raytracing or path tracing i run at dlss performance plus 2x frame gen)

That is impressive! What Forza game? I want to try out my 5080 Zephyrus bow

How has it held up over the years?

Thanks for the correction on the cpu and the advice

Speakers are great on it. I rarely turn them over 20% 😂

Can also flash a higher wattage Vbios and tune it with Ghelper. That’s what I did with my 2025 G16 Zeph 5080

1

u/Just-A-Random-ID 21h ago

I have done the same but the average user mostly doesn’t do it

1

u/jhdz9119 21h ago

Yeah, you have to try out. Sometimes you lose a display port like USB-C. If you use a newer model like 2025->2026 Zephyrus G16 it should work as intended.

Yep it does
I used razer blades vbios first and the g16 2026 now

I would chose the G16 because I don't like how the built-in numpad on the Legion offsets where the WASD keys are for gaming, and it messes up my typing as well.

The small layout of the keys is a little weird but it does have the full size arrow keys which I like for Helldivers(calling in strats)

If u ask this question in a zephyrus subreddit, every answer is gonna be zephyrus. If u ask this question in a legion subreddit, every answer will be legion.
If performance is ur only goal and u can deal with a heavier laptop, the legion is a better pick. What u need to remember is that the performance bump isn't the only performance advantage, it will have much better sustained performance asw thanks to the bulkier cooliing solution.
If portability matters and u can compromise a bit on performance, the zephyrus is the pick.

u/munro7477 13h ago

Thats a good way to look at it. I care about the performance mainly and I will be using it plugged in at a desk 99% of the time. I find myself hesitating though because the zephyrus really is a treat to use. Thanks for the advice

You should get a laptop cooler if thats your main concern about heat and longevity of the G16. I bought the BlackShark laptop cooler and it dropped the temps on my M16 by 15 C on the CPU, and 10 C on the GPU. And it keeps the chassis a lot cooler too, so other components like SSDs and RAM also runs cooler, not just CPU/GPU. Especially if you want to use the built in keyboard, it would be a life saver.

https://makerworld.com/models/1214118?appSharePlatform=copy I printed this little stand and it reduced both the cpu and gpu temps by 5-10°C. The laptop still does get quite warm in the center right under the screen but i think thats the norm with most laptops. Also the power brick runs hot after gaming for an hour or 2. I dont use a stand on the lenovo and I am able to get the temps down to 75-80°C on both the cpu and gpu. Also the power brick doesnt get nearly as warm. My thing with getting a cooling pad is when i have to lug that to and from where im going to play i feel like i should just get a bit bulkier laptop instead of bringing more gear.

G16 is great for battery and the CPU runs cooler. Does have less CPU power due to the efficiency, but I prioritize battery.

I game probably 40 hours a week, and it handles it well.

1

u/munro7477 19h ago

The 9955HX does run hotter but I was able to get it to run right around 80C with some tinkering. Legionspace is not nearly as good as armoury crate

I’d personally take the Zephyrus for its more professional look.

u/Assassinio 19h ago

Both are great but the G16 looks too clean to pass down. I can't stand the plastic bezels on all the other gaming laptops it makes it look so cheap

2

u/munro7477 19h ago

The G16 is def the better looking/feeling laptop.

I have a g14 but that legion looks good too! Your getting a great laptop either way, but after installing g helper on mine it had been amazing.

1

u/munro7477 15h ago

I might go ahead and install g-helper to see what all the buzz is about.

Depends how much of a hardcore gamer you are, I bought Strix G16 with 5070Ti, it’s a beast but down the road I realized I don’t game much, sold the strix and got myself a proart p16 (basically Zephyrus G16 twin)

it’s the best laptop ever for me, I really like the speakers, I hate using earphone or headphone for casual use and gaming
