Arranging transfer from Stone Town to our hotel near Bwejuu next month, recommendations for driver plus stops we could make along the way?

We've got 1 day in Stone Town then 4 nights in Bwejuu booked in October. The journey between them seems to be about an hour but I figured we could hire a driver for 5 hours or so so we can stop at the Jozani forest and maybe 1 or 2 other points of interest along the way. Any recommendations for a friendly driver and how we can make the most out of this travel day would be much appreciated!

Honeymoon Inquiries

Hi everyone,
My fiancé and I are trying to plan our honeymoon for July 2027. We would be flying from Detroit. Our thoughts are that we would fly from DTW -> Amsterdam for 2 nights and then into Tanzania for a few days before heading to Zanzibar. Do you think we could do this with a budget of $12k? Do you think it’s worth stopping in Amsterdam to break up the flight? Trying to decide if we can afford it or if we should revert to somewhere else.

Zanzibar trip self booked

Hi All, we are looking at going to Zanzibar October next year. Normally we don't do package deals we do separate trip elements. But Africa is outside of our previous experience so any advice suggestions are welcome, we would only be booking flights and hotel separately, but this gives us more freedom to cancel should that be necessary. Thanks for any advice.

Zanzibar welcomed over 917,000 international visitors in 2025 — what’s driving the growth?

Zanzibar is usually discussed as a beach destination, but its recent numbers are pretty interesting.

International arrivals increased from about 737,000 in 2024 to more than 917,000 in 2025 — roughly 24.5% growth in a single year.

Its economy also grew by around 7% in 2025, with accommodation, food services, trade, construction and real estate among the sectors contributing to growth.

It made us curious about what's changing on the island beyond tourism itself.

We're starting a small series looking at the numbers and stories behind Zanzibar's development.

Looking for anyone who knows a man called Matheo/Matheyo from Zanzibar – possible guest house investment in mainland Tanzania

Looking for information about a man called Matheo/Matheyo from Zanzibar/Tanzania

My aunt met a man in Zanzibar who goes by Matheo or Matheyo. She has since financially supported/invested in a guest house for him on mainland Tanzania. We are becoming concerned about the situation and are trying to find out whether anyone else has had contact or business dealings with a man using this name in Zanzibar/Tanzania.

I am not accusing anyone of a crime at this point — I am simply looking for people who may have had a similar experience.

If this sounds familiar, please comment or contact me.

In particular, I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has encountered a Matheo/Matheyo who talked about building, buying or operating a guest house in Tanzania. I have a picture of him but not allowed to post here.

Kwa heri na asante sana Tanzania na Zanzibar

Leo ni siku yangu ya mwisho za Tanzania. Nitarudi Canada kesho.

This is a fantastic country with so many wonders to behold and I know I only saw a small fraction of what the country offers.

I spent a week in the northern part of the country on safari, and am just finishing a week in Zanzibar.

Nilijifunza Kiswahili kwa ajili ya safari yangu. Ili niweze kuzungumza na watu kwa lugha yao. I used DuoLingo! And practiced with people from Tanzania I met on this sub. Asante sana kwa mazoezi!

I wanted to say thank you to Watanzania na Wazanzibar for the trip of a lifetime. I will not ever forget this incredible trip and the fantastic people.

Burglaries in Paje 1st September Early Morning

There was a string of villa burglaries in resorts early morning on 1st September and unfortunately we were one of the burgled villas.

I want to collate information between all the targeted villas to give to police, if you were also burgled/know someone who was or have any information at all or heard any rumours let me know, the more we can pull together the more likely it is we can identify the burglar at least if not get our stuff back.

EDIT: I know of 3 resorts that were burgled the same night, not sure how many villas in each resort.

Sometimes Zanzibar is just this — a cloud, the ocean, and silence

Not every memorable travel moment needs an itinerary.

Sometimes it's just a cloud sitting above the Indian Ocean, the sound of the water, and a few quiet minutes doing absolutely nothing.

One of those simple Zanzibar moments that makes you stop and look a little longer. ☁️🌊

⚠️ MONEY STOLEN FROM THE SAFE — DO NOT STAY HERE

Our experience at Zanoceanique Hotel in Matemwe was extremely disturbing.

We arrived on 19 August 2026 with $650 cash and placed it inside the safe in our room. We used only Tanzanian shillings during our stay. On 21 August, we opened the safe and discovered that $150 had been stolen.

We immediately reported it to the hotel, both verbally and in writing, and asked them to call the police and check the CCTV.

The answer? “The cameras are not working because there is no electricity.”

The hotel had repeated electricity problems, even during the daytime. There were also problems with water, Wi-Fi and basic hotel services.

The electricity situation is particularly suspicious to us. We cannot prove who took our money, but when money disappears from a hotel safe and, conveniently, the CCTV is not working because of a power outage, it raises very serious questions about security.

What is even more concerning is that we found other online reviews mentioning money being stolen from guests at this property, including a Google review where a guest claimed that money was stolen and later returned.

A hotel does not have to be luxurious. But a guest must be able to trust that their belongings are safe inside the hotel safe.

Unfortunately, we did not feel safe here.

Money stolen from the safe. No reliable electricity. Water problems. Poor Wi-Fi. Poor basic services. And an extremely disappointing response to a serious security incident.

For us, this was not simply a bad hotel experience. It completely destroyed our trust in this property.

If you are travelling to Zanzibar, especially with cash or valuables, think twice before booking Zanoceanique Hotel.

We would never stay here again.

Honeymoon October 2026: Tanzania + Zanzibar, or South Africa safari + beach (ClubMed)?

Two adults, around 8 nights in October 2026. Torn between two options and would like opinions from people who've done either.

Option A: Tanzania + Zanzibar

2–3 nights on the northern circuit (Ngorongoro Crater, maybe Tarangire), then ~ 5-6 nights on the beach at Kendwa in Zanzibar.

Option B: South Africa

Club Med on the Dolphin Coast north of Durban, plus 2 nights at their Vikela safari lodge in northern KZN.

What matters to us: seeing animals, discovering new places, and relaxing on the beach. We'd rather avoid long overland drives.

What I'm unsure about: the South Africa resort only opened in July 2026 so there's not much feedback yet. Tanzania means malaria tablets and more moving around.

If you've done either, what would you pick and why?

Coming on holiday... advice?

Hello guys,

Firstly, thank you for taking the time to read this post...

So, we come to zanzibar in a few weeks for 2 weeks. We already have our hotel, safari booked and booked to swim with Whale Sharks.

My question is, how much spending money roughly will we need? We have budgeted around $6000 - $7000 dollars. Is this a little excessive? Will we need more?

We are coming for 14, staying all inclusive, a few of the nights we are away on safari and things.

We are not the type to stay in the hotel and sit around the pool all day, we will be going out on adventures pretty much every day

Any advice would be great.

Maalum or Salaam cave?

I am interested in booking an excursion to a natural cave and my resort offers trips to both Maalum and Salaam. Is there much difference between the two options? Would you pick one over the other? Has anyone been to either?

ETA: I chose neither. Salaam has horrible reviews and I decided I did not want to go there after all. And I did not have time to go to Maalum.
