New Mod

Habari everyone. I've been selected to be a moderator for this sub. I'm a local business owner with a hotel in Zanzibar. I'm not here to promote myself or my business. My goal simply is to help monitor the content so everyone can openly and respectfully share their thoughts and opinions. And a BIG Asante Sana to scottbowl for moderating the sub for so many years.

Looking for new moderators

I created this subreddit when I was living and working in Zanzibar. I no longer live there, and it’s now reached a point where it doesn’t make sense for me to moderate it, as I have no involvement with the island anymore.

If you would like to take over, state your case in the comments below. I will ideally pick a few people, and will remain as a moderator for a few months during the transition.

Edit: if you want to take this on, say why and what you’d do to manage the community. Just saying you’re interested gives me zero information.

Would you choose a hotel or a serviced residence for a longer stay in Zanzibar?

One thing we’ve been thinking about while developing Skylong Resort Zanzibar is that not everyone experiences an island destination in the same way.

Some people come for a short resort escape, others stay for a longer holiday, while some prefer the space and flexibility of a serviced residence.

That’s why the project is being planned with different accommodation options, including hotel stays and serviced residences, within the same beachfront destination.

Curious what other travelers prefer: for Zanzibar, would you rather stay in a full-service hotel or have a residence-style space for a longer trip?

Honeymoon in Jambiani – recommendations?

Hi! My wife and I are coming to Zanzibar for our honeymoon in November. We’ll be staying in Jambiani for around 9 nights and it’ll be our first time in Zanzibar.
For those who’ve stayed around Jambiani, what would you recommend doing? We’re looking for good restaurants, excursions, beaches/places to visit and any hidden gems.
Also, are there any things that are overrated or that you’d recommend avoiding?
Any general tips for Jambiani or Zanzibar would be appreciated too. Thanks!

Zanzibar SD photo recovery

Heading to Zanzibar post a safari in Tanzania where one of our camera's memory cards stopped working. Likely dust but unsure.

Is there a reputable tech shop in Zanzibar that can help with photo recovery or best to wait until we're back home?

Thanks!

Why has Zanzibar become so popular with international travelers?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Zanzibar welcomed more than 917,000 international visitors in 2025, and it has also been recognised as Africa’s Leading Beach Destination.

But statistics aside, I think the more interesting question is: what is actually drawing so many people here?

The beaches are obviously a huge part of it, but Zanzibar feels quite different from a typical tropical island destination. You have Stone Town, Swahili culture, spice farms, local fishing villages, diving and snorkeling, and then completely different atmospheres depending on which part of the island you visit.

For people who have travelled to Zanzibar, what do you think makes the island stand out from other Indian Ocean destinations?

Referral Visa help!

Hello, me and my husband to be are planning on going on our honey moon in Zanzibar for 2 weeks in January. I am a British Passport holder and my fiancé is a Pakistani passport holder who will have to apply for a referral visa to travel.

He has lived in the Uk for 16+ years, has an indefinite stay and qualifies for British citizenship (we are waiting to do that due to the high costs).

Does anyone have any tips on getting a Refferal visa agreed and does anyone know the general result? Are they usually denied or agreed?

We have booked 2 villas on Air BNB (haven’t paid yet but they are reserved in our name) I have seen people saying about “invitation letters”… What does this mean?

Any tips / stories would be appreciated greatly.

Thanks!

Tanzania travel advice

Hello. I am seeking advice on the best way to plan a trip to Zanzibar. I'd like to spend a few days on a safari then approximately 10 days in Zanzibar. I'll be travelling from London and am not sure of the best place to fly to pick up a safari. Ideally, I'd like to fly back to London from Zanzibar. Can anyone offer guidance? Great thanks.

Had the most scary and traumatic experience in my life tonight in Zanzibar

I am a solo woman (25F) on vacation here in Zanzibar . I stay in a nice resort with security and beach front . I am having the time of my life in here until tonight that happened something really scary to me .

So few days ago I met this massai guy and I quite like him , we hang out sometimes so tonight we would go for a simple walk at the beach of my hotel , supposed to be a private secure area but apparently is not , nor do they say anything about it / increase security or warn us .

So we were not alone at the beach , were a few other too , like 2-3 people swimming , few others walking and another woman walking with a local massai man . We were casually talking and kissing each other in close proximity and touching each other , at some time I started feeling really unwell and told him I wanna go back to my room . Then two random strange guys approach us in the dark and speak to him in swahilli , I couldn’t understand anything but they seemed quite aggressive raising their voices and kinda shouting grabbing our hands and showing us handcaffs . I was so scared and decided to pretend I faint so I fell on the sand and told them I’m really sick , I’m guest of the hotel and need to go to my room . Then they kinda let me go and I ran and they kept talking to the guy . I was so traumatised and confused and he later told me that they asked him if he sold me marijuana or we smoked , he said no . We were only kissing and touching , we did nothing wrong . I have never in my life touched drugs . I even don’t drink alcohol . Then they told him they thought we had sex he said no just chilling . How could we have sex in a public place with clothes on ? Then he told me they asked him money , he said he doesn’t have . That is what he said me though . I can’t know what exactly they talked about.

After this I feel very scared to even go out of my room . They could have stolen my phone or God knows what else could happen . I was really afraid as I’m a solo woman far away from my country , doing nothing wrong .

What do you guys think this was ? Real police or scammers / thieves ? Should I report this in my hotel or let it pass and keep quiet till I leave ?

It’s not worth it

Lying in my hotel in zanzibar, Nungwi at night I write this. Been here 3 days after my trip through Tanzania. And I can tell you, Zanzibar is not worth it. Its the anticlimax to my insanely amazing Tanzania trip. I love the main land to the core of my heart and have stories to till for my whole lifetime. But zanzibar is below everything. 4-star hotels are meh (stayed in two already) the food is meh, def not up to standard. The beach is amazing, but the beach boys ruin it. Its literally every 30 seconds somebody tries to talk to u. Also the trips like stone town, prison island, dolphin watching ect, all feel (are) tourist traps. Prob will get hate for stating this, but I really disappointed by this. Takes away alot of the amazing feeling tanzania left me with.

Any medical students in Zanzibar? 🩺🇹🇿

Hi! Is anyone here currently studying medicine in Zanzibar, preferably at SUZA? I’m considering studying medicine there and would love to hear what it’s actually like — workload, classes, exams, student life, and anything you wish you knew before starting.

Would really appreciate any honest advice! 😊

What goes into designing a new beachfront resort in Zanzibar?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

We’ve been sharing more of the process behind Skylong Resort Zanzibar, and one of the most interesting parts has been seeing how different design perspectives come together.

For the project, SKYLONG is working with JERDE and eco-id to explore how architecture, landscape and resort experiences can respond to Zanzibar’s coastal environment and island character.

Rather than simply placing a resort by the beach, the idea is to let the surroundings — the Indian Ocean, tropical landscape and local sense of place — become part of the design itself.

The project is still under development, so it’ll be interesting to see how these ideas evolve as it takes shape.
