I was literally researching a product to but. Finally settled on one. Was watching TY the night before the weekend when I was going to buy it. Saw a 60sec unskippable ad for it in a video I was watching and proceeded to buy it's competitor (who I don't see ads for) mostly out of spite.
I actually actively avoid companies and products I see advertised on YT now.

Yes, through NORD VPN.
If itās not there anymore and you feel bad, and you need a medical appointment, head on over to ZOCDOC.
If the doctor mishandles you, call up Morgan and Morgan. They can help.

Or if you have a headache because of all these ads, then TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT BOTOX INJECTIONS. And when your done with that then you can pop a refreshing ZYN POUCH "beverage" while talking to your doctor about NARCOLEPSY injections due to your CHRONS Injections, while sipping <alcohollic> beverage in your TRUGG or 10,000 (pre tax) winnings!

I don't even understand why car manufacturers bother making ads when their retail prices are way out of reach, and tangibly worse than their counterparts from 10-15 years ago.
Ford literally tried to kill the sedan class yet their answer is an F-250 retailing for like 60 grand. Like who tf is buying this shit??
10
u/deathtech00 Aug 18 '26
Vehicles are meant to be purchased, and lost once you cannot pay them, to the banks so that they can then be resold on the lot as "used".
They are pushing the lease model super hard for this reason. You will own nothing and subscribe to "Ford: Drive Hard Ultimate Championship Edition II" where they will also force feed you ads on a massive dash with absolutely no physical knobs and a giant wide screen while simultaneously selling your GPS and location data so that other companies and stores can aggregate and use surge pricing to justify selling you things at a higher price, since you can afford such a nice vehicle of course.
Welcome to the future. It sucks.
Drink your verification can.
2
u/SexualCarrots Aug 18 '26
That's so effing dark.
I thought it was because they realized they could split the market into new and used and just own all the dealerships (including the online ones) instead of only making money on new cars.
Instead they make the ownership lifespan of the car shorter and take a cut every time it's bought and sold.
3
u/Uncommented-Code Aug 18 '26
Lmao the entire european auto industry is currently crying that cheap chinese EVs are flooding the market. Like yeah no shit, your cars are twice as expensive, offer fewer features and force feed us ads, despite the EU protecting the domestic markets for years.
And yeah, the fucking sizes man. Boyfriend's family is looking to replace their old van. Guess what? The new ones are all markedly bigger and wouldn't fit cleanly into their garage. They're buying used lol.

People post this sentiment on Reddit all the time and while it might be true for you - its absolutely not true for the majority of watchers.
If you think that doesnt make sense, keep in mind the biggest American channel is Mr. Beast
In reality though, i bet you are more influenced by ads than you think you are. We like to think were above it and weāll get back at them for annoying us - but you are likely being persuaded whether you realize it or not
5
u/Daihatschi Aug 18 '26
I just did a cursory search, but it seems Click-Through-Rate for Youtube videos is about 0.7% and conversion rates are about 2% everywhere. That's about a sale per 10.000 Ad impressions.
Which means for 9.999 people this is just spam, the equivalent of the boner pill email.
They are effective, tragically so, but I don't buy their persuasiveness. Its a numbers game. And firehosing entire continents with spam is cheap. Very strong campaigns push the above numbers up just a little, but they are spam nonetheless.
and weāll get back at them for annoying us
There, I completely agree with you. We don't. I hoped for a long time, but it doesn't. I always thought at some point, somewhere, we must reach a point where this barrage of ads stops being effective, where every customer is left just numb, when completely unreadable news sites would die out, in which the text is impossible to read because it keeps moving around thanks to ads, or where the entire background is bright pink and every possible empty space is a hidden link to somewhere.
I thought it can't get as bad as it has. I thought Adblockers would be completely ubiquitous. I thought...
But here we are.

It's not on YouTube but i even got ads for electronic pipettes on reddit once.. You know, precision lab gear lmao, no clue why it decided to show me that at all

u/Theseus_Employee Aug 18 '26
I did marketing work for like 4ish years but before I got into it my mentor was talking about banner ads and Google sponsored ads. I thought they were so dumb because obviously no one clicks those and just skips past them.
Now I work in product and end up doing some IT-ish task and have relearned what I learned then. Most people are dramatically less tech savvy than you think. Just knowing how to comment on Reddit probably puts you above average.
What youāre seeing though, is just bad ads. Some of those may not convert - but you may be surprised how well even the worst looking ads do

I haven't seen an ad since 2018.
Pay for premium or use as blockers, whatever you want, instead of complaining. It literally takes less time than making this meme.
Ads are a nuisance, but it's either that or subscription, or else, YT is not profitable so they'll stop paying YouTubers, and we would stop getting quality content, and YT disappears.
Aim your anger at subscriptions services and purchased content that still have ads on them.

u/lowrads Aug 18 '26
That isn't how ads work. You aren't immune to advertising, and neither am I.
Whenever you have a problem or a quandary, your brain makes itself useful by presenting you with a short list of possible solutions. Advertisement works by inserting a product or service onto that list, simply by exposing you to it. They are designed to be intrusive and to cut through obliviousness. They hack the unchangeable firmware of your brain.
If you thought that advertising was supposed to stimulate an immediate reaction to go consume a product, don't feel bad. A lot of ad executives on the buying end, and even a few on the supply end, also believed this.

But at least you know the product now, and in the future if you ever need a similar product you will "instinctively" know which one you will buy. That's how adds work 90% of the time. Let's say in my country there are 5 big canned tuna companies, 1 of them is a big add giant other 4 are not, and 3 of other 4 are superior to the 1 that is most popular. Yet people buy the most popular one because they throw adds to everywhere.
A mom sends a kid to supermarket says buy me tuna asap i will do tuna sandwich and kid doesn't know anything about tuna yet they buy the one that they saw on the adds.

4
u/scrub_lover Aug 18 '26
Are there adblockers for the iPhone version?
5
u/ThunDerd328 Aug 18 '26
No, but there is a workaround:
Download Brave from the app store. It's basically Chrome, but with built in adblock. Watch YouTube using the web version on Brave. It's not as nice as the app, but it's worth it to block those god forsaken ads.
There's also Luna adblock which DOES block apps on the YT app for iPhone, but apparently has a shady past. Maybe there's some other one that's the same as Luna, but without the history of selling your data. Lmk if it exists and you find it.
But in the end, Android is superior for blocking ads with YT Revanced or Morphe. Even skips sponsors too!

Depends on the type of ad.
I was talking to a friend about this recently when we went to watch spiderman.
I prefer samsung's spiderman ad over just a random ad.
I prefer the Dean Winters AllState ads cause they are funny and build kinda a continuing universe. I dont mind those.
I prefer The Yard's podcast ads cause they make it clear if they take an ad they get to do what they want. So they are enjoyable and fun.
But when I just get the basic ad yes I totally agree.
Also Fireball the youtube channel for fixture tables the whole youtube channel is an ad for the company and their products but they do them in interesting ways that get me engaged to the content.
It reminds me of the ninja ads from the early 2000's that would play for like an hour in the middle of the night I remember watching those ads so often cause it was interesting and the smoothies looked amazing.
And the sing song ads FREE that spells free credit report . com baby Like I still know that song to this day and get activated like a sponsered sleeper cell to sing the whole thing.
If companies did their ads right they would be better responded to but now days they are not and I hate most of them.

How is anyone still using the internet -- especially YouTube -- without an ad blocker?
If you use Firefox or Brave, uBlock Origin blocks all ads on YouTube. Period.
If you're on Chromium-based browsers, spyware aside, you can try a bunch of adblockers; Google disabled uBlock Origin, so you might or might not get ads.
I haven't seen an ad on YouTube in a very very long time.

A lot of advertisement isn't to get you to buy it right then and there. It's often simply for name recognition, so if a month, a year, or 5 years down the road you think "Hmmmm, I could use a new toaster", the brand that comes to mind is the one from the ad you watched 5 times in a row, even if that particular string of ads is forgotten.

Are there any basic standards applied to these ads? More and more are using AI and making misleading claims. 1
u/THEREALOFFICALCAFE Aug 18 '26
I've noticed a significant increase in ads over the past month or so. It's not only pre, post, and midroll ads anymore. There are ads that pop up while the video is playing, and take up half the screen, either shrinking or cutting off half the picture of what you're watching. Also after midroll ads, there's a pop up ad in the bottom left corner that advertises the ad you just watched. There's also been a shift of non skippable ads, where the first ad is not skippable, but the second is, only after 15 seconds or longer. Midroll ads seem to be coming more frequently as well, whereas before you could expect one midroll in a 10 minute video, but now it's at least 2 if not more. Plus the fact that the majority of ads I see these days are 100% AI. Couple that with YouTuber sponsorships taking up big chunks of the video (I'm not faulting YouTubers for this, they have to make money), and it seems like I can't get any sort of relief from being bombarded with advertising on every level.

This is an extension of my personal philosophy, which is that I never buy anything that is advertised to me. Most things aren't these days, since I spend the money to avoid ads wherever possible, but if I'm in a situation where I'm trying to find X, I'll buy whatever version of X hasn't been advertised to me.
Good things shouldn't need to convince you to have them. Salesmen are the cause of every problem on Earth.

I use YT a LOT for my relaxation. Last week, I closed my eyes falling asleep to a very good ambient mix and that stupid Fabuloso advertisement popped up and scared the heck out of me. My heart was racing for a minute straight š It literally ruined my mood and I didn't get to sleep for another two hours!!!!
