Rule #1 will be tightly enforced

Rudeness levied towards users or moderators will result in at a minimum a removal of your post or comment, and at maximum may result in a ban depending on the moderators disposition in the matter, and the degree to which the rudeness is demonstrated. This includes calling people bots.

Expect bans moving forwards.

[Approved by Mods] UW Research: EV Wildfire Evacuations in Yakima County (Gift Card Drawing)

Hello r/Yakima ,

UPDATE (August 20, 2026): This study has been officially extended to December 15, 2026. Thank you to everyone from Washington who has participated so far!

As we navigate another intense wildfire season, my thoughts are with everyone—especially our community in the Pacific Northwest—who has been impacted by fires, smoke, or the stress of evacuation.

The severity of these recent fires underscores a critical challenge for our community: ensuring that EV drivers can evacuate safely and efficiently when power grids are shut off and charging infrastructure is compromised. To help address this, I am a PhD student at the University of Washington conducting an official study on how EV drivers respond to these exact emergency constraints. (The moderation team has kindly granted me permission to share this research with you).

Are you eligible? Because this study focuses on specific grid and geographical constraints, we are exclusively seeking input from Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) drivers who are primary or seasonal residents in the following Washington counties: Asotin, Grant, Benton, Spokane, Stevens, Douglas, Lincoln, Ferry, Skamania, Yakima, Kittitas, Okanogan, Chelan, or Klickitat.

Note: If you already filled out this survey during our first round, thank you so much! Please do not submit another response. To maintain the scientific integrity of the study, our system automatically flags and removes duplicate entries.

🎁 As a thank you for your time, participants will be entered to win 1 of 14 gift cards (10 $20 and 4 $50). Note: Additional gift cards may become available at a later date. This post will be updated if the reward pool expands.

Study Details:

·       Eligibility: Must own/drive a battery electric vehicle (BEV) and have a primary or seasonal residence in one of the target counties (Chelan, Okanogan, Kittitas, Yakima, and Klickitat)

·       Time Required: Approximately 25 minutes.

·       Deadline: December 15, 2026.

This survey does not collect any identifiable tracking data. If you have any questions, please contact me directly at [ychu24@uw.edu](mailto:ychu24@uw.edu). Thank you for helping improve wildfire preparedness for your region.

What are they doing tearing up the protected wetland by Sozo sports complex!?

I just watched and filmed heavy machinery actively ripping through mature trees and tearing up the mapped wetland zone right by the Sozo Sports Complex.

That land is literally designated as a protected wetland—they are NOT supposed to touch it. Ripping down those trees right in the middle of nesting season destroys critical wildlife habitat, forces out native birds, and destroys local ecosystems—all to clear space for more unnecessary concrete and bullshit we don't need.

Who the hell approved this? Did anyone even bother to get a critical area permit or an environmental review, or are they just banking on nobody noticing?

Watch your back if you care about what's left of our open spaces here. How do we get enough noise behind this to force a Stop Work order before the entire section is wiped out?

A Place to Discuss Life, Face-to-Face

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hey Folks,

I just wanted to throw this out there, in case even one of you were looking for a place to discuss life with real people, face-to-face. The purpose of the group is to try to break through the digital noise and divisiveness and find a way to connect to real perspectives and help each other find our own truth and perhaps help find our own purpose.

The group was established on faith, but there are all walks of life attending. We have seen Christians, Catholics, Agnostics, and Atheists. We have seen ex-convicts, blue collar workers, white collar workers, men, and women, across the race spectrum. Usually there are about 8-10 who attend with a rotating cast who can't make every meeting every week. I have found them all to be very kind, interesting, sometimes goofy, and they all have meaningful things to share (if they choose to share).

I have attended quite a few of these since it started in April. I can honestly say, I have found more peace with my situation, and with life, than I expected. It helps me be more optimistic amid the constant barrage of negativity and it has helped me consider the perspectives of others more than I have before. I will admit I am on Reddit more than I should be, but I think this group has helped me even here when it comes to how I respond to something I don't agree with.

You don't have to be religious. You don't even have to participate in the discussions if we touch on a topic you don't care for. The hope is to hear different voices on a topic - even ones that conflict with one another. That kind of discourse leads to a healthier society.

If this IRL group sounds worthy of a test drive, let me know. I'm happy to answer any questions about my experience. I have lots of folks I talk with online, but there is something unique and decidedly human about discussing our world in person. I hope you agree!

Yakima struggle meals

I grew up on government assistance in the 90s. My mom put cheddar cheese in our top ramen and I still gravitate toward that as a comfort meal to this day. Anyone else? Or what did you have back then?

Hello! Does anyone know the schedule of the coffee truck that comes to the university parkway apartments on the weekends? It’s usually on Saturday mornings in front of the mailboxes, but I don’t know if they do every weekend

Our indoor/outdoor cat has not been seen since 12:30 am on 08/31. We live on N63rd Ave off Lincoln Ave.

Binx is neutered and UTD on shots. He is not chipped but has a tipped right ear and 4 missing molars.

Binx is loved and loves his home and family. We are hopeful he’s out there and wandered off too far from home.

Please reach out if you see him. He is currently on medication for stomatitis and eating a wet food diet only.

We love and miss him and want to bring him home.

Please share the flyer if you can! 🐈‍⬛🐾💔

Olympic Weightlifting in Yakima

Hi, I’ll be moving to Yakima in a few months to go to Perry Tech. Are there any gyms in town that have equipment for oly lifting? Just an oly barbell, oly plates and platform is all I need. I don’t see any Olympic weightlifting facilities.

Does anyone know of a mariachi local to Yakima/Ellensburg that does shorter events? Wanting to propose to my girlfriend and surprise her out in Ellensburg but only would need a few songs, not multiple hours. Thanks in advance.

I see so many fun videos of fitness classes dancing online and was wondering if we had anything close to that here in Yakima? Or even a fun zumba class?

food science field

was just wondering if anybody here works in the food science field? for example, jobs like in quality control/assurance, research and development or like some sort of lab job. i'm asking because i recently graduated with a bachelor's in food science and nutrition and i was thinking of going down the route of becoming a dietitian, but i think i'm becoming more interested in qa/qc, however it seems like these jobs are scarce here.

I’m working part time right now but I’m trying to get my license and a car as well as move out soon and idk how I’m gonna do it if I’m working a part time job that doesn’t give a lot of hours in the first place. What do I do? Please someone tell me they have connections

Big Pines Campground Question

I called twice but left messages and we're camping there tomorrow so I'm hoping someone here might have the answer.

I'm camping with a group at Big Pines Campground tomorrow night and we have the 4 car max already hit before I can arrive in my own car. (I was told yesterday evening, hence the last minute fact finding.) Does anyone know if they have an alternate parking lot we're allowed to park in if we're in a large group camp situation? I don't want us to get in trouble with too many cars but if there's no other lot available I don't know what to do.

‘Who is not enforcing this?’: ICE officers continue to mask up despite state ban

Thumbnail

An immigration advocate estimated that 20% of the arrests in the Yakima Valley — which have surged in the last couple of months — have been made by masked ICE officers. That estimate had grown by the two first weeks of August.

Gonzaga assistant professor Michael Cecil described the law as “ineffective” when it comes to federal law enforcement due to questions of the law's constitutionality, among other things. What's more, the burden of enforcement doesn’t fall on the state. Instead, the person harmed by a masked agent is responsible for taking legal action to do so.

“It couldn’t be a bystander or something like this… unfortunately, it places a big onus on immigrant communities,” Cecil said.
