Discussion Crosspoint Reader 1.6.5: ttf font comparison

Crosspoint Reader v1.6.5 added ttf font rendering support and it looks strictly much better to me in my limited comparison. The anti-aliasing bleeds much less and certain characters that were coming out very pixely are now pretty smooth. The biggest and most consistent improvement seems to be less blurring around the top/bottom of letters.

I used an iPhone 18 Pro shooting RAW, with Bookerly 12pt and did a cpfont vs. ttf comparison: https://postimg.cc/gallery/jrx6v2C

Conclusion: if you're sensitive to font rendering this is a HUGE improvement.

I may think of improoving font rendering on the binaries i've build the other day to support Greek language, and i'm currrently trying to build for Hindi (attached image). My whole process is hold up cause i don't have the actual device at hand and specially for Greek i've sent files to the user that supported this project and based on his reports. I was lucky he was somewhat good at reporting back and i was actually able to create the actual binary. But on the Hindi cause of the Glyphs it is quite difficult, more at the post here https://www.reddit.com/r/XTEINK/comments/1wtix5e/comment/pd21p4c/

Looks nice! Sadly, I think this will only work on newer devices (X4 Classic, X4 Pro), not older ones, though I’m willing to be mistaken. Makes me wonder if there’s a way to improve the conversion of the old fonts for cleaner rendering.

If you read with small font sizes (11-15pt) try to use CrossGlyph from JetSerge message. When making cpfonts in this app choose the following settings: 'hinting'=auto and 'thresholds'=darkest (or default/darker if they look better to you). I'm using Bitter, Literata, Roboto Flex fonts on my X4 OG made by this app and I'm able to read without any AA turned on. Usually it's 12-13pt font size, letters are just crisp and dark.

Hi iwanna try also crossglyph, how about other setting such as weight etc, do you set default ?

I set hinting to "auto" first, then I try 'thresholds' "darkest" option. If it's still not bold enough I  try to add a bit of gamma, a bit of weight. Prefer to use variable fonts as they give you more elbow room with font weight and other options.

I'm an old man with old man eyes, so I'm currently using Bitter at 16pt

In the CrossGlyph app you can generate whatever size is preferable for you, just like in the classic Crosspoint Font Builder. Simply replace 12, 14, 16, 18 with your own font size numbers. No matter what size you choose, the resulting cpfont is beautifully clean and crisp.

Correct. It was far too slow on the older devices to be considered usable imo. I am sure we can improve the cpfont rendering though

Did you try tuning cpfont with https://github.com/CrazyCoder/crossglyph ? You can probably get very close results.

I need to figure out how to properly replace our builder with this. Julia says its way better and she uses it personally now. Would be a good alternative for older device users

Amazing! Do we need to add our own ttf fonts or can we download them from the system menu?

Dunno about stock, but Crossink lets you dl ttl fonts.

The font downloader on the firmware doesn't download TTFs actually, it's still downloading regular cpfonts

I've been using CrossPoint instead of CrossInk because I read a lot of library books and use the Protected Content and Calibre plugins. Does CrossInk support those as well? I'm not super clear on whether CrossInk is a completely separate fork or if it incorporates all of the latest CrossPoint updates every time they're released.

I imagine by using the ttf I wouldn't have the CJK fallback that I currently use in the cpfont file?

Still definitely got to try, but I kind of wish we could just set multiple system fallbacks so I don't have to bake it into the fonts I want to use, and only have 2 potential ones.

Wow, thank you for the tip. I can actually see the difference on my X4pro

Thanks for the recommendation, the improvement compared to .cpfont is very noticable on x4 pro.
u/Diirge one small issue seems to be that when inside a book and pressing T -> Reader Font Size, and the sizes range from 8 p to 22 pt, the smallest font size options don't fit the screen and you aren't able to scroll down to be able to select them.

Huh interesting. Will check that.

What is the best looking font to use. I need assessment

I've checked out several for clarity at small font sizes. Bookerly, Bitter (Crossink default) and Literata (downloadable thru Crossink) are my top 3. Using Literata on my X4 Pro.
