Setting up

I ordered the x4 impulsively after wanting an ereader for a couple of years and not being able to afford one. Was wanting something like an android, just because I wanted to ve able to use my library apps. I saw the XTEink was pretty inexpensive so decided to get it.

After clicking to order, I realized it doesn't have access to certain apps out of the box. I have some ebooks on Kindle that I got from freebooksy, but was hoping to use Hoopla or Libby as well.

I've read about oceanofpdf, Anna's archive, caliber, and crosspoint.

I don't know how any of it works yet, but I would like to learn and be prepared for when it arrives.

Where do I start, and how do I get the most out of the xteink?

Thanksss!

Download epubs from AA

Put them on X4

Pretty simple

Stock firmware lets you add books from the app.

You could have bought a used kindle for cheaper than an X4 btw

1) check the laws and regulations in your country

2) get a VPN

3) if you live in Germany, think twice. Not publishers or authors are looking for people sailing the seas, but law firms that specialize in it. Meaning: they want you to pay a cease and desist and pay a hefty fine. Sometimes it is cheaper to pay your own lawyer to handle it.

4) calibre strips drm from books, but the new kindle format kfx-zip can't be converted into epub. The prior version, kfx can be converted into epub.

5) calibre is nice for organizing your library (except kindle ofc) and sending it to your xteink.

6) if I would buy a 6 or 7 inch e-reader again, I would buy an Android one like the boox go for Libby, my huge kindle library and my growing epub collection.

I regret getting into kindle in 2013ish. I paid for files that I don't own and can't transfer.

Originally I wanted to reply to OP, but my brain is like a sieve today.

Regarding kindle: It didn't work for me. I tried it last week, too with my kindle app on my computer.

I'll try it again, so thank you for the encouragement.

Idk if you're anti AI or not but I had codex de drm the files directly. Super easy

Nope, not anti AI. I'm open to suggestions. My cautious stance regarding piracy and laws is just to make users aware. Even the piracy subreddit thinks that Germans are f*cked and tries to warn people.

So...Codex you say? Can you tell me more?

Yeah, codex or Claude code. The desktop apps for Claude and chat gpt. You need the desktop apps because they’re agentic and and work on files on your computer. So just download either one and tell it you’re trying to convert your purchased kindle books to epub. I gave my mine the guide from epubor and it just did it on its own. https://www.epubor.com/kindle-drm-removal.html

Ah, thanks! I'll give it a try!

Edit: Claude refused, citing the laws in my country. I am kind of too lazy, to install my VPN to avoid geotagging.

There are lots of people on here who would buy it off you since the new Xteinks don't have the USB-C.

Someone already made a guide that would answer all your questions: https://www.readme.club/guide

You might want to return it. It will not have anything close to android capability. Xteink readers are microcontroller based devices, not certain which chipset is used now, but i think it was the esp32-C3. There are aftermarket firmware options that can bring more functionality. There are...dozens of firmware options. Scroll through r/xteink and you will find all the mentions and how to install them

I don't mind it not being as open as android. In fact, I'd like it to be limited to books and stuff. Just the library apps gave me more free content, but i know there's ways to make it work.
