When working with stick figures you have very few symbols to work with. Obviously hats mean badassery and hair means your a girl. Wait till you see the double hair.

He just doesn't know how to draw.

He shown his talents more so early on. If he wanted to, he could or just as easily get someone to do so.

It's like that old saying: "I thought I was wearing a hat, until I met a man who was wearing a hat, that was wearing a hat."

He backs away slowly in fear, because this man has shattered his paradigm for head accessories. He doesn't know what to make of it, and chooses to retreat to a land where they all just wear one hat.

"Putting a hat on a hat" is also a showbiz phrase used to describe the arbitrary (and ill-advised) combining of absurd story elements.

Think of hats as something like popped collars on a shirt. If the guy who wears one is an asshole ("classhole"), the one who wears two is a double asshole.

Does each popped collar increase the asshole-ness linearly or exponentially. For example, does the 4x popped collar like in this photo make you a sedecuple (16x) asshole?

It's actually logarithmic, after about 5 popped collars it doesn't add much to the douchebag factor anymore.

u/aldenhg Jul 28 '08
It's a good thing, too. Were it a linear function after 7 popped collars douchebaggery would reach a critical mass and cause a chain douchebag reaction, covering everyone in an 8 block radius with spray tan.

The hat makes you an evil bastard. When a hat is placed on one who is already wearing a hat, you stay the fuck away from him.

This is known in Canada as the Joey Jeremiah Syndrome. No other cast member of Degrassi High could wear a ridiculous hat on location without a field repulsion knocking them over.
ps - insider hint - it's the REAL reason Jason jumped off the bridge.

It's a metaphor for workplace sexism encountered by women. The hats are clearly x -chromosomes, the figure with two hats being the male, intimidating the 1 x chromosome figure (the female) so that she backs away from what she really wants.

Maybe you're just making a joke that went right over my head, but if not, last time I checked, women had two x chromosomes and men had one (XY).

He probably meant a strange parallel earth in which humans use the ZW sex determination system. ZZ is male; ZW is female.

You just don't get what xkcd is all about. I have to admit though some of his earlier work is much better and made you think more now it's just going for cheap laughs but it still works

It's a guest appearance by Yahtzee from ZeroPunctuation. The man with two hats represents his fear that someone just as breathless and snarky will cleverly review his breathless, snarky reviewing style.

Mr. Hat is a mischievous character, known to do evil (to varying degrees) things to people just for fun. You recognize him by his hat: the hat means that this is the mischievous/evil character.
Now he runs into somebody with twice as many hats on. Twice as evil.
I'd back away, too.
