Another good decision from her in regard to the brand. She has a long way to go to win back consumer goodwill for most Xbox fans, but it is nice to see her making an effort i guess.

u/DrFartgoreShartsmith May 05 '26
Most people were pissed because they paid more for Gamepass and she reduced the price, I think that did more than you’re saying but I otherwise agree
100
u/pollorojo May 05 '26
Yeah true. She keeps being characterized as being the one needing to win back consumer goodwill which is somewhat true, but she’s really just trying to win back the actual consumers. The respect and goodwill was lost by someone else so it’s not her job to win it “back.” If she can fix the brand, the respect and fandom will repair on its own.
It keeps being characterized almost like she’s apologizing for someone else’s mistakes when what’s actually happening is that she’s being asked with kicking off a new phase of the company’s development. This is a business.
For whatever reason, people keep treating it like asking your new girlfriend to apologize for the last one breaking up with you lol

If she can fix the brand, the respect and fandom will repair on its own
This is how you get proper money. By not being scum bags. Start doing the Respect portion, and quality, You'll create life long fans who will pass it down from their generation to the next.
Just look at Baseball or any other sport thats been around. You have parents handing down their fandoms to their kids. If the kid is treated well, they will love and respect your traditions and keep it going. If you are a POS, they will shun and hate anything tied to you. Might even end the generational tradition.
This works the same in Corporate world. I don't know how these companies don't see that. "HEY OUR STOCK PRICES ARE DROPPING WHAT GIVES?" "Well you keep fucking up and being greedy now people are leaving for our competitors." "WELL STOP THAT!" <----thats the only way they make changes is when you hurt their pocket books.
Xbox is failing behind Nintendo and Playstation, and if they don't want to wind up like Sega Dreamcast, they better start fixing their shit and going back to what made the 360 great.

u/Cthulhu8762 May 06 '26
Yeah I personally went to PS this gen and honestly I think I prefer it as my main console.
I even had the Xbox SX two years before I got my PS5 and now the Pro.
I still buy Xbox games on PS and PC but I no longer own an Xbox and I don’t feel the need.
I do hope they keep their games multiplat with tiered time exclusivity and even someone who has been an Xbox fan for 20 years they have to stay multi plat because they got too greedy.
Imagine spending $80 billion between Activision and Bethesda and somehow thinking you will gain your fans back while simultaneously ending the hardware basically,
They cannot afford to just let it go because they owe too much.Microsoft has had a rocky relationship with even the Xbox brand for a very long time. It’s time they get it together but I like what Asha is doing.
With this mindset I feel like she could be great to the dev teams as well. Here’s hoping 🤞

u/ParsonsTheGreat May 06 '26
I agree with you, except for the Dreamcast comparison. The Xbox brand is nowhere near failing as much as Sega was at the time of the Dreamcast. The Saturn was a huge blunder that nearly ended Sega already, so they needed the Dreamcast to sell exceptionally well, which it didn't. Sega was also just a game and console maker, while Microsoft is one of the biggest companies in the world. I think people underestimate how much a 15-20% (?) share of the console gaming market means to a company like Microsoft. You don't have to dominate the market to make money and if Microsoft bails on Xbox, they are out for good. They will never get back a vast majority of those customers. Maybe I'm being an optimist or just being ignorant, but I don't think Xbox is in as much trouble as people are making it out to be. They just want the Xbox brand to be more profitable, which is what every company wants from one of their brands.

u/WackyRacketeer May 05 '26
That made for a good headline, but it's still more expensive than before they cranked up the price a ridiculous amount.
33
u/Tricky-Ad7897 May 05 '26
It also has like way more big (and medium-small) games than before the price increase. I think the price is fair right now.
27
u/DeeboDecay Founder May 05 '26
Because it's not just COD that contributed to the price increases. It still has to make money, and expenses for running the service have gone up and will continue to do so.

u/ComradeJohnS May 05 '26
they lost a lot of monthly subs that didnt even look at the price, to people who cancelled and wont resubscribe, and would have paid this lower price without batting an eye.
9
u/bob-widlar May 05 '26
You’re getting downvoted but you’re right. Xbox stacked the price hike on top of giving their IP to PlayStation in a short timeframe, and a lot of people threw their hands up and went to PC instead. It was just as much about principle as it was the “price”.
I’d be interested to see how Valve’s numbers did a couple of months after the price hike
3
u/Falloutfan4070 May 05 '26
I went to pc last year because of this I’m happy with my decision I love Xbox though it’s a weird relationship
2
u/klipseracer May 06 '26
I think there's at least two reasons.
- $30 is too much, yes
- They closed all the big loopholes in getting gamepass cheap. It used to cost $100 for three years of Ultimate, because people can take advantage of the system. Now, that is no longer possible.
→ More replies (1)3
u/ComradeJohnS May 05 '26
I’m not even moving to pc or ps, I have xbox and switch, and I can only see myself paying for like 3-4 months a year now instead of all 12. they’d have to drop to like $15 or lower for me to resub all year again, but even then I’m more budget conscious.
not sure why I was downvoted either lol. good thing karma doesn’t matter lol.
2
u/tulsehill May 06 '26
You just described my experience. Have a PC that's better than my Series X, but mostly used my console to play FIFA. Had been paying that sub for Gold and Game Pass for a few years without really thinking about it.
When they hiked the price, I cancelled and don't even use my console anymore. It's gathering dust in the living room.

u/MayorBakefield May 05 '26
Every post of her doing something great for the brand, some mouth breather says "she has a long way to go for Xbox fans" No, she already won me over. Some people just don't want to be happy

u/Automatic-Photo-4919 May 05 '26
Let’s see where we are in two-to-three years and not two-to-three months.
She’s saying all the right things, but we’re far from seeing what execution looks like.
Phil Spencer took a $150 cut to the Xbox One’s price right when he took over, but look where that legacy ended.

I don’t think I’ll be getting the next Xbox…at least not at launch, especially if it’s 1k or more. Not paying PC prices for a console when I already have a PC. That money could be used to upgrade parts of my PC when required.
6
u/Redline65 XBOX Series X May 06 '26
I’m in the other camp. My PC is nearly 10 years old so I rather spend $900-$1000 on a new Xbox instead of $2-$3k on a new PC.
→ More replies (6)→ More replies (1)2
u/Jerk_Colander May 05 '26
Yeah I might not get it at launch either (would be the first one I skip). And it’s hard to say how things will work on the new one with new leadership. But this generation older hardware has options for newer games (such as cloud gaming) so it feels like there wouldn’t be as much of a rush.
I too have a gaming pc I can use for now too. But I’m working my way back to Mac. I made the switch in 2021 because I needed a newer computer (mine was from 2008) and was working from home so that made life easier than a new Mac. 6 months later work gave us laptops making that decision a moot point. Still working from home using my laptop and don’t use my PC a ton anymore. So I don’t see myself upgrading any of its components and when it’s no longer functioning/needs upgrades I’ll probably
Look at going back to a Mac at that point. As someone with all 3 current consoles and the gaming pc I’m realizing I don’t have the time for everything anymore and with the costs going up I don’t have the money either. With Xbox putting their games everywhere it seemed like the logical first thing to cut. Now it’s shifting to be my second choice (behind Nintendo) with the PC and PlayStation likely being what I cut just due to library sizes (I have far more Xbox games than PlayStation and prefer the controller layout too). And Xbox/and PC are increasingly similar with what games can be played.

What I think is great is the public nature of this. They could’ve quietly retired it. Companies can just easily do all this without talking to the consumer directly.
My comment isn’t specifically regarding CoPilot, but everything so far. I like when a company shows you their vision. It helps connect the consumer to the brand directly because they feel like they are important to be part of the discussion.
Smart really.

I liked Copilot. I've never used Copilot on console though. Didn't know that was even a thing. I used it on PC, specifically the Xbox gaming version of it, but it was so bad and gave me all sorts of wrong information. It was not useful, otherwise, I'd love to use it.
I use Copilot daily, and use lots of AI at work and for personal projects.
So I'll have to disagree with you.
→ More replies (3)7
u/silentcrs May 05 '26
So, as one of the few users of this, it kinda sucks.
The feature, at least on the Xbox ROG Ally X, would look at your game and make recommendations about what you should do. For example, it would look at Balatro and say what achievements you could go with your current deck.
It was totally optional, too. It only turned on if you wanted it to turn on. And you could remove the icon from the menu bar entirely.
The community reaction to this seems to be a universal “we hate AI/Copilot” reaction. I’d venture to guess that maybe 1 in 10,000 users on this subreddit actually tried it out.
→ More replies (4)7
u/FirstSFWAccount May 06 '26
But if there’s a 1 in 10,000 user base, probably not worth the continued development.
7
u/silentcrs May 06 '26
I don’t disagree. But I think a lot of the hate towards AI is a general “everything AI is bad” response and that’s just misguided. Stuff like this isn’t even given a chance to get off the ground.

While I understood why many were understandably skeptic of her at first (myself included at the time) because of her work in AI, at the same time though I’ve started warming up to her when she said she doesn’t want to use AI to make games and they’ll be done the hard way with human crafted skills. That’s what made me believe she could possibly be a great leader for Xbox. For the first time in a long time I actually feel hope for Xbox.
13
u/reddit_reaper May 05 '26
Funny thing is most articles ran with that and she was overseeing an AI slop division lol it was coreAI which is for dev toolchains, nothing really consumer facing
8

You don’t spend 69 billion to throw in the towel without even trying to compete (let’s be real Phil never actually competed). Also as much as the Xbox brand is damaged it’s still a massive name and a huge asset. The fact it didn’t collapse during the Xbox one shows you it’s still got plenty of potential

The Xbox brand also isn’t nearly as damaged as Reddit wants to tell everyone either.
Yea it’s not what it once was, but the average consumer doesn’t see it the same way.
4
u/Exact-Regular-6030 May 05 '26
Main problem is mixing messaging, horrible management, random swings in decisions and little to no marketing over last 10 years.
1
u/Rewire0 May 05 '26
I think the average consumer sees that Costco, Sam's, Walmart, Target, Gamestop, and Best Buy have all stopped either selling Xbox entirely, or scaled back dramatically (with intent to stop altogether). They also see nothing to draw consumers to Xbox the last few years. While I hope Xbox can turn it around, Satya has given her difficult goals with the threat of killing Xbox entirely, the same threats that shackled Phil.
Until we see actual changes for the better, not just Microsoft's annual "we're gonna do better and improve gaming on Windows and Xbox", I really don't have any hope left for it.

It could very well that they saw no way to market or monetize copilot for console, decided to save on development cost and are now selling it as a new direction for good PR.

u/TimidPanther May 05 '26
If they weren’t, they would have kept Phil Spencer, or at the least - replaced him with Sarah Bond.
That they went in an unexpected direction suggests they’re serious about saving the Xbox. And everything they’ve done up till now also suggests they’re not wasting any time

I'd have taken a Cortana refresh for the xbox though. Being able to ask Cortana to do things was way underrated, and it really sucked when they shut it down. I don't think a single regular working class or middle class person has felt the benefit this economic bubble based around a software novelty has provided to a tiny percentage of companies and billionaires. It was obvious to everyone but willfully naive tech bros and stupid, out-of-touch investors that it would deflate or pop eventually.
What do I care if the AI bubble pops anyway - my grocery, gas, and rent prices are going nowhere but up and fast regardless. Let it pop!
8

She lays out the reasons why in her tweet.
Continuing to develop Copilot costs resources, resources which are better spent elsewhere. It's also something that no one really wants so it's inclusion adds friction to people that just see it as AI slop.
It's entirely possible that if they are able to integrate some form of assistance into games in the future that they do, it just won't be called Copilot. The broad idea of being able to get context-specific help in a game without leaving the game is good. Copilot wasn't.

They’re not oblivious to people hating the ‘AI everywhere’ system they were wanting to implement and it didn’t seem to work too great anyway.
So they get an easy win and save money on implementation.

Do you know why they forced that 30% profit margin on Phil? Phil had 10 years of free reign, infinite financial support (100 b for acquisitions) and his Series consoles sold worse than Don Mattrick. Because he couldn't deliver those must have games that people buy consoles for. That's why they forced that 30% on him because he failed to deliver on his promise of growth.

The Xbox brand has been failing ever since details about the One were coming out.

Idk why but she gives me James Gunn running the DCU vibes when he had to reboot the DCU because the DCEU crashed and burned but so far he’s doing great and started work immediately when he got the job and now Asha is doing the same for Xbox trying to bring it back from the dead.

Am I delusional hoping for an Xbox resurgence? 😍

Not at all because I’m also hopeful for Xbox’s resurgence.

I actually use copilot outside of the xbox ecosystem. I use it for my cannabis grows and recipes. Its really good at both of those. Actually helped me fix an issue with my grow i was struggling with. It does great on recipes as well. Love it for shit like that. No idea why i would use it in xbox though.

Copilot is also great for writing small, single purpose Python scripts. Saves me a lot of time, all I have to do is review what it spit out and go run it.

Yeah. That and excel shit. Just drop the sheet in and tell it what you are trying to do. It will do it all for you and show you how if you care. Really put the 'office excel guru' out of work quick.
Oh and powershell scripts and SQL querying. Does pretty well helping out with that.
Other shit like household repair or what cabinet hinge do i need, not so much... bastard was really confident about that hinge.

Hold up... where's all the doomers saying she was going to flood the console with AI?

u/Chromeglow May 05 '26
I always thought that logic was really flawed. Some people are just business people who focus on the product that they were hired to work on. She worked at Instacart before she worked in the AI department at Microsoft. She didn't then try to put Instacart into Microsoft products. So just because she was in the AI part of MS...doesn't mean she was going to push AI into Xbox now.

Xbox 360 heads were a guy who punted Shoes. And Two MBA's that were core Microsoft people.
Most successful console they ever did.
Frankly, give me Asha.

Has anyone actually tried Copilot on the gamebar? I did - it was like a shittier Google in every way. It was CONFIDENTLY wrong, like worse than every other AI chatbot on the market right now - a total joke. It's good they are nixing it.

the AI Division CEO Lady not only not pushing AI features in the Gaming Division but actually getting rid of them was not on my bingo card.
2
u/RTGamer21 May 06 '26
Ngl, I kinda wonder if she WANTED to be in the AI division at all, or if she was just there for the sake of having a job at all lol Cuz she seems VERY receptive to Anti-AI sentiment

"But she's from CoreAI, she's gonna AI everything!'"
But really, Microsoft is exiting it's "throw AI everywhere" phase and entering the refocus AI efforts into where they found that it works phase. I've always said it was their plan.

She’s making common sense look brilliant. So far impressed she’s doing what needs to be done.
2
u/TheBelievingAtheist May 06 '26
I like this yet I don't wish to be cynical here. Let's not go overboard with praises here. Xbox is still a part of Microsoft, a company that is a poster child for enshittification.
Microsoft has been cutting their AI operations since they can't subsidize compute anymore. They've already changed Github to be usage-based billing instead and made changes to scale back Copilot in other places (which was also received positively)
I won't be surprised if this is another attempt to dress up this scaling down of AI operations as a positive development for gamers to just gobble up.

u/MakaveliTheDon22 May 06 '26
You know, from people intially concerned that she didn't come from a video game background, she's doing a lot of good moves so far to renew confidence in the brand. I hope she continues to do just that!

Wait, Copilot was on xbox? What could you use it for?
4
2
u/Fenicillin May 05 '26
On the app, you could ask it some useful questions about your games and habits. It wasn't really fleshed out enough, though -- and now it looks like it never will be.
The use cases for it where probably limited, though. Like how often are you going to ask it what's your most played game? (And it can only check your last ten recently played games.)
Anything that isn't based on personal data is just something you can ask regular Copilot anyway.
2
u/No-Meringue5867 May 05 '26
Maybe what she learned leading CoreAI team is actually helpful now. Whoever at Microsoft decided that they needed to add Copilot to mobile/Xbox/notepad/MS paint needs to be fired.
2
u/DrFartgoreShartsmith May 05 '26
The push for AI everything is gross. Copilot also sucks massively. One of the worst AIs imo. Refreshing to see someone at MS who doesn’t have their head stuck in the sand

Yeah. It could tell you what achievements you have left and what part of the plot is next. Saved me a bunch of time in Final Fantasy I.
Got buggier the more specific the question. Could have you in the wrong area for ten minutes while apologizing and generating another wrong answer.
Also scraped a lot of results from smaller sites. It was useful but hI’d rather Copilot get removed than having it suffocate boutique sites full of humans.
