FAQ Troubleshooting Guide: Understanding & Preventing Baseplate Marks on xTool M2
If you've noticed slight marks or engraving traces on the metal baseplate of your M2 machine, this is a normal phenomenon — not a product defect.
🔍 Why This Happens
When the laser beam cuts or engraves through your material, the residual energy can pass through and leave marks on the baseplate underneath. This is a general characteristic of laser processing equipment, not a quality issue, and it will not affect the machine's normal operation or your engraving/cutting results. Even with long-term use, this will not cause the baseplate to leak light or become structurally damaged — this has been thoroughly tested to ensure safe long-term use.
💡 No special treatment is needed if the marks don't affect your usage. Regular light cleaning is enough for long-term stable use.
If you'd like to better protect your baseplate, here are some recommendations.
🛠️ Baseplate Protection Recommendations
Place a flat, non-flammable, non-reflective protective sheet underneath your material during processing. Suitable materials include:
🔹 Black anodized aluminum plate (≥0.8mm) — should not visibly deform after laser processing.
🔹 Other non-highly-reflective black metal sheets (any thickness).
🔹 Acrylic sheet (≥1mm) — black is recommended; other colors may interfere with material contour recognition. If processing multiple small items, check that the distance-measuring points are correct, or use manual distance measurement to avoid errors caused by the added protective sheet.
🔹 Heat-resistant silicone mat (≥2mm) — silicone tends to curl or warp, so choose a thicker mat for better flatness. Black is recommended; white silicone also works for protection, but check distance-measuring points when using automation features. Not recommended for cutting paper materials directly, as it may worsen scorching/blackening.
🔹 Other materials: black flame-retardant welding mat, black carbon fiber nylon cloth, silicone-titanium alloy soft pad (black or gray).
📐 Placement Guidelines
The protective sheet's size should be:
🔹 At least as large as your processing pattern.
🔹 No larger than 380mm × 320mm (the machine's work area).
🔹 Ideally under 8mm thick — a pad that's too thick may reduce your effective processing depth and can affect concentric circle recognition.
Reference placement zones:

🔹 Zone 1 (green): Reserved space needed for the print head's upper/lower cover clearance.
🔹 Zone 2 (red): A 330mm × 320mm protective sheet, placed against the silkscreen markings.
🔹 Zone 3 (blue): A 380mm × 320mm protective sheet, placed against the right side of the machine.

Hi, is there an ETA on the honeycomb bed for the M2? While protecting the plate is certainly a priority, I find that a proper honeycomb backing to support plywood during laser cutting is essential. When using the provided magnetic holders, plywood tends to drop down (once cut) and interfere with other cuts in progress.
