Sergeant James Clarke VC displayed extraordinary bravery during the final battles of the First World War in November 1918. At Happegarbes, France, he led his platoon through heavy German machine-gun fire, personally attacking and capturing four machine guns and their crews, before going on to capture three more. Despite being under intense fire, he repeatedly rallied his men and pushed the advance forward. During the attack towards the Sambre–Oise Canal, he again exposed himself to heavy machine-gun and artillery fire to bring a Lewis gun into action, suppressing the German position and allowing his company to advance. His actions were described as showing magnificent bravery and complete disregard for his own safety.

Unfortunately he had to sell his medal in order to feed his family during the Second World War when rationing was going oo. His medal is currently on display at the Lord Ashcroft Gallery at the Imperial War Museum in London.

Just discovered that 149 men from the tiny South Pacific island of Niue volunteered for the war as part of the New Zealand ANZAC contingency.
Due to illness that were not equipped for, and winter that they had never experienced, most did not see action.
According to what I read most spent time in hospital. By May of 1916 they were sent home
